Siena 1 – Milan 2
By: Gianfranco | August 24th, 2009Yes it was a win, and there were positives within it, but let’s hold our horses for a minute. Pato played with ferocity that I have not seen in Red and Black uniform since Rino in the 07 CL. He was hungry, he was intense, he was aggressive, and he was confident. Defensively, seeing Nesta in action was almost as calming as knowing Maldini was back there. Other than a simple miscommunication with Storari he did not put a foot wrong and was a boss in the back. This team is far more dependent on him and his than I had anticipated and this game was absolute proof of that.
For two days we bathed in the afterglow of a win, but now that the luster has worn off it is important to discuss some of the shortcomings as the squad prepares for the earliest Derby of the season that I can remember. Last year this fixture was a 5-1 demolition of a team that may very well be relegated this season after saving themselves in the last. After a very difficult 8-10 minutes to start the first half the squad seemed to settle in and find a groove and began to maintain possession to start to wear down Siena. This ball movement gave Ronaldinho room to operate and began to expose the defense as he was able to create space for Pato and Borriello in the attacking third. He was extremely successful with the final ball as well as worked hard to create space and setup Janks for two or three shanked sitters.
It was a good easily his most solid in the shirt, but the same way many of you chosen to reserve judgment until deeper in the season, I will also do the same. Consistency is the need and the key to make this team move forward. Lost in Dinho’s and Pato’s performance was the work rate and effort of Marco Borriello.
Borriello was involved in both goals and moving the ball into his Brazilian line mates, but his effort to pressure the ball and move in and out of space allowed room for Pato to operate. The score sheet will never show this type of effort, and it will be interesting to see if KJH is willing to get that down and dirty in the offensive third for the good of the colors.
The play of the wingbacks, Zambro and Janks, was not as bad as anticipated, with Zambro being the more disappointing of the two. He seemed extremely lost and unable to find the game for ninety minutes, while Janks worked hard in the offensive third but not so much in the defensive third. Thankfully Flamini and Rino cleaned up when needed and facilitated solid defensive play for the few attacks on the Milan goal. Storari did well with a few great reaction saves, but Abbiati should not be concerned awaiting his return. It was disappointing to see the goal conceded once again with poor marking, an ailment that seemed to continue to linger on the Milan defense, but with some chemistry building I hope it can be remedied.
It is a good building block to push this team forward and help forget a terrible summer. With the derby looming this confidence boost is welcomed, but it is important to not blow this win out of proportion because Inter will come in hungry and farm more difficult than Siena.
Leo has his work cut out for him and Dinho will need to build off this game to continue to gain confidence in my eyes and many of yours.

Talking of Maldini
The Captain Speaks!
http://www.football-italia.net/aug25h.html
Mouthwatering words “A victory in the derby can certainly change Milan’s prospects, especially as it’d open up a five-point lead over Inter straight away. If we beat Inter, we can target the Scudetto.”
Wow!

b this game is very intertwined so for Pato to be as free as he was that means his striker had to be operating such a way to allow that to happen. Again I fully expected his performance to be criticized, but as K said there is more to football than scoring goals and performing step overs. Football involves a large amount of work on and off the ball and for a flashy player to succeed on it, Dinho, he needs a lot of hard work off it…the camera only shows the man with the ball, but head down to your local matches whatever they may be and start to gain a real appreciation for everything else that goes on with the other ten players when one has the ball…sorry for the rant but if everyone on this squad rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty every once and awhile ala Inter of two seasons ago, and to some extent last season, then this team would be a force to make up for its real lack of creativity…

Avia – that son of a bitch doesn’t wanna move!
Gian – Here is what Leo commented after the match:
“The best things I saw were the approach to the match, the game organization and the will to win. With regards to the individuals, Borriello and Pato did very well, but also Ronaldinho, who found his position”
And here are Boriello’s declaration:
MARCO BORRIELLO:
“Tonight I did what the coached asked me to do, I sacrificed myself, but it did not weigh up on me as my physical condition is good. I took advantage of Huntelaar’s suspension and I think that I had a good performance together with the entire team. The two goals arrived from a triangle between Pato, Ronaldinho and myself, therefore we did well.”This just shows that boriello was just asked by leo to hold up the play in order for pato and ronnie to get more space. I think he did his job pretty well. He always rose to the challenge and made sure we kept the ball. I dont care if he dint socre but he did what he was asked for!

The truth is Borriello was anonymous in the first half. His pass to Ronaldinho in the sequence leading to the opening goal was just routine. Even my grandmother would have found and executed that pass.
Second half was a different matter. He started to look for the ball and received it more often. He also started to do what he was in the team to do, bring down arial balls to ground, as he did for Pato’s second goal. He was definitely good in the second half.

Well said Syed!
To those knocking Borriello it says alot maybe about lack of knowledge of Milan for the past two seasons
We were first calling out for a target man who would get onto the end of Beckhams kazillion crosses into the box as well as a bigger player who would hold up the ball for a player like Pato
We finally have that then people are like “blah blah blah Borriello doesnt score much blah blah”
U cant win!

Who said “Borriello doesn’t score much” in this discussion?
Some people are tilting at windmills.

Is K related to Gianfranco? Seems like it. Seems like they have a lot of hatred for flashy players. Oh well, we have one of the best and he’s with Milan. Sorry he is not Italian. You guys sound like jealous sucks.

hey gianfranco -
well, given your experience i will watch borriello a bit closer next time. but he seemed pretty lost to me. i appreciate the need for someone to do the hard work that allows the “skill players” room to perform. i just didn’t see borriello providing much. i mean, the inverse of your argument is that pato was double teamed so often, borriello should have been finding space with which to do something.i think he needs to work on his runs and distribution. but perhaps if he continues to keep his work rate up, he will settle into the side.

borriello is an average player. against siena, how many shots on goal did he have? i realize strikers/forwards have multiple roles. holding the ball, keeping possession are included. however, they must also keep the defense honest and attack the goal occasionally.
i did not see borriello do this the entire match. and that’s probably the reason why he is a reserve when both kjh and pato are healthy.
for me, i’d rather have super pippo out there. he might always be offside, but at least he is making the defense work and trying to put the ball in the back of the net.Posted from

The appreciation comes from understanding, and while I am not pointing fingers, some ppl around here lack basic knowledge in the tactics and composition of the game. As Gian rightly pointed out the camera is our friend and our enemy, it lets us see the flashy, beautiful side of the game, while hiding the hard nosed, “dirty” workers without whom positive results would be an impossibility. Viva La Borriello!!!!

Boriello did what he was suppose to do create space for Pato and R80 by dragging a defender and half if possible with him. Such is life when ur not the go too guy on the team anymore. Bori did well.
But more concerning to me is something Gianfranco mentioned, the play (or lack of it) by Janks and Zambrotta. These guyz are horrible!!! I can’t decide what they’re worse at offence or defense cause they’re useless on both sides of the ball. Zambo is slightly worse than Janks but both are useless. They looked horrible against Siena.
You ever see footage of Huntelaar? He scores TONZ of goals many coming from quality crosses from the flanks and having a player of his quality is a waste with quality passes/crosses coming from the flanks. Janks and Zambo aren’t up to this task.
It’s so important that our wingback/men on the flanks serve quality crosses in the box, as it stretches the defence horizontally providing a lot more space in the middle for R80 & Pato to work their magic in.
Many sit here and cry about losing Kaka and not getting a quality replacement for him when we should be crying about never getting a quality replacement for Serginho or Cafu. Sheva banged in countless balls that began with nice service from those 2 into the box.
Since those 2 in their prime and even coming to the end of their careers, we haven’t really posed any real danger to teams on the flanks and therefore never got the best of our strikers. A streaking Cafu up the flank drew all sorts of defenders as did Serginho. Yet these guyz weren’t a liability on “D”
Teams let Janks, Zambo (and Oddo when he was playing) take turns kicking the ball into outer space from the flanks and I can count how many times they let a guy get by them on D and score. Its truly painful.
Y do you think the past few years all teams do is clog the middle when they play us? Cause they know we don’t pose any real threat on the flanks.
One really good player on the flank will win us an extra 5-8 games this season and the same about a few more goals.
2 good players on the flanks and we become legitmate scudetto & CL yes I said it CL contenders!!!Posted from

damn BigDawg4Milan u are def making up for your absence!
Some super sweet points there
i totally get the rippn on Janks & Zambro and the fact that we havnt any real replacement worries me greatly
looks like we are gonna miss out on De Silvestri who i know would have been far better on either wing

Gian – I don’t know why you decided to become the king of whiners, but it’s rather annoying from one milanista to another. The lads did well especially with all the negativity surrounding their preseason. Please, please quit your b-ing and just enjoy the W.
