Rosso, Nero & Azzurro

By: Gianfranco | June 12th, 2008

I have tried to put a post together for a few days but with some anger, frustration, and a sense of emptiness since Monday nothing has really read the way I wanted it to. There is one message that has shown through in all my ramblings and that is regardless of what I (or we) think about these players or I (or we) think about The Don, the bottom line is these are the players and coach that we got and before the game Friday or the end of this tournament these two things will certainly not change.

What I will say however; is that club affiliation aside, it really doesn’t matter who on earth ends up on the pitch for the next two games as long as the result is 3 points each.
Hell The Don could field Inter’s midfield for all I care (sorry I had to get a rib in there), but regardless of who it is, the sloppy lack of execution from Monday has to be gone. There was a heck of a lot of finger pointing intra-squad, and in the media, but not a single sole, other than Gigi, owned up for their own performance. Goals were missed, men weren’t marked, and their was bickering in the tunnel; all this is just plain unacceptable. These guys are world champs, veterans, and consummate professionals and regardless of their captain or their coach they should be capable of better.

In the Don we must trust, and in the starting eleven we must trust….because as I said earlier nothing is going to change in that regard.

Also, the Prem’s arrogance is disgusting. Remember that whole Game 39 deal? How the Prem officials think anyone would pack a stadium full in Asia or America to see Fulham play Middlesborough is quite foolish. Sure, there are huge turnouts when MANCHESTER UNITED goes abroad, but no one would care to see petty midtable Prem teams. That is simple arrogance coming from the Premier league.

JP i am glad you brought up 03 because the english were a bit snooty about that final saying it was boring and ended in PK’s, ironic isnt it. But the big four are what they are, but as more money pours into EPL because of those clubs, smaller clubs will benefit and prosper. Take for example Tottenham and Everton, I liken them to Samp and for arguements sake the Viola, even though the latter is in CL. These second tier clubs, or the group below the big four (italy has those four as well, typically), in Italy wont be able to compete monaterily with those clubs in the EPL therefore making the purchase and retention of players all the more difficult.

JP, I agree with what you said almost completely. The stadium issue needs to be mentioned. The EPL has better attendance because their clubs own their stadiums. Almost all EPL clubs own the stadiums they play in, and thus can remodel it, change it, increase capacity, and draw full income from it. There is one Serie A club (to my knowledge) that owns its’ ground, and that’s Juventus. Nearly every other club (all others, I think) lease it from the city. Those familiar with Italian government know their bureaucracy is world-famous, or infamous. Thus, most Italian grounds are falling rapidly behind what they should be. Thus hurts attendance, league prestige, and of course, income.

Are we discussing the competiveness of the elite teams, or of the league in general? I wouldn’t agree but it could be argued that the EPL big 4 are “better” than the Serie A big 4, but of course that’s due to calciopoli hurting the league and Juve directly. If we’re arguing the league, there’s no doubt Italy is more competitive. Could Reading or Birmingham or Derby hope to beat Man Utd? Absolutely not. But in Italy, Empoli, Livorno, and of course Cagliari frequently caused upsets. Giantkilling from the bottom shows the healthiness of the league.

Speaking of which, I’m excited to see the Coppa Italia is being expanded to the lower divisions.

Is it really alessio? That’s brilliant. I always liked the formant of the FA Cup in England, makes it a lot more fun to watch when you have upsets like they did this year.

Serie A, B, C1, C2, and even a few D teams. I also believe that they aren’t two-legged until the quarterfinals or semis, I can’t remember what the rumors was, so one game, easy for an upset. Bout time, maybe it will start to mean something.

Forget EPL and Seria A comparisons… You will never find a compromise. :P

As for Ambro/De Rossi issue: In terms of gameplay Ambro was one of the brighter spots in otherwise ineffective performance. However, in terms of tactics, inclusion of Ambro limited Pirlo to mostly defensive role, like in Milan - which he apparently detests, preferring, more advanced, free flowing “fantasista” position that we saw, and appreciated during qualifiers.

Chubby its funny you say that because the whole idea behind playing Ambro and RIno with Pirlo is to complete remove Pirlo of any ball winning duties, and alowing Rino and Ambro to circle Pirlo constantly winning balls all around him. Problem with Monday was VanBasten played it perfectly by clogging and pinning the midfield deep which even against Milan causes problems.

Some more rally cries, this from Marco Pantanello of MCalcio:

Donadoni concluded that tomorrow, Italy must play with the will to show the rest of the world we are still the champions, even if the fear is setting in. Fear that, as per Donadoni’s words, is no reason to be ashamed. “Fear” he says, “is not always negative. Being afraid is human, otherwise we would all be robots. No one can be absolutely fearless in certain situations, but some of these feelings must be exploited to the best. A “healthy” fear is okay, but we must avoid the kind of fear that puts you in a slump or slaps cuffs on your wrists”.

Hey guys, I watch Serie A and the EPL and I agree with Gian to some degree…maybe not the bottom half of the EPL but from 1-12 they would give any team in Serie A a tough game and in most cases get the win. It is completely biased and naive to think otherwise. The best young talent in the world resides in the EPL right now. There is a reason why a team like Liverpool who struggles to finish in the top 4 in the EPL can win the CL twice and make it to the semifinals on what seems to be a regular basis now.

DDR is over-rated, Gian threw the CL numbers out there and any of those fans on the ITaly page who were having a love affair with him should take a look at that. The best players in the world step up in the biggest competitions; plain and simple. If you don’t perform in the big ones, sorry; your not a top class player. Period. So lets see what he does when he gets playing time in this Euro and if he follows form, he won’t make a difference.

With all our talk of getting a striker, why hasn’t Lukas Podolski’s name been brought up? He has been unsettled at Bayern Munich by Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose, and he is supposedly going to be contemplating his future after the Euro Cup as he is unhappy with his current role. Rumors are that Manchester City is already preparing a £20 million offer for him.

Podolski would be a nice addition and very complimentary to Pato. But management wants a target man and he doesnt fit the bill, and with Klinsmann taking over at Bayern he will play Podolski and Podolski will thrive.

gian it seems like you have won :Arsenal line up Roque Santa Cruz as Emmanuel Adebayor asks for Milan move, Milan have admitted to making an official approach to Arsenal for Adebayor and reports in Italy say the 24-year-old Togo international has already agreed personal terms with the Italian giants.
Adebayor is said to have told his agent, Stephane Courbis, that he wants to swap the Emirates stadium for the San Siro, where he would earn around £3m per season.

    BUT……………………………
Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz is wanted by both Arsenal and Manchester United Santa Cruz shone for Blackburn during his debut season in the Premier League after moving to Ewood Park from Bayern Munich.

The Paraguayan, who cost just £3.5m, scored 23 goals for Rovers last season.

Santa Cruz’s goalscoring form has also caught the eye of Arsenal Manager Arsene Wender, who requires a striker but has been put off by the £35m price tag Tottenham have placed on Dimitar Berbatov.

Arsenal will feel confident they can lure Santa Cruz to London after Wenger pipped United to £5m Cardiff winger Aaron Ramsey. In a further boost, Eduardo, Arsenal’s Croatian striker who broke his leg during a Premier League match against Birmingham back in February, could be involved in pre-season training.

Never seen him play, but I heard good things about him.. Does he play attacking?

If he’s another defensive-midfielder, I’m gonna shoot Galliani..

This is ridiculous. Now, Holland, of course, is going to throw away their game on Tuesday. What’s stopping them from resting all their starters, they have nothing to play for. Plus, they’d definitely rather ensure Romania a place to advance anyways.

I dont believe so, he was on the books though possibly as a third which means you do nothing. Milan has held so many players on contract who have never played or played a match or two like Redondo and Taribo West.
