Monday Musings
By: Gianfranco | June 11th, 2007It looks as though TH14 (Thierry Henry) will not be signing for the Rossoneri because he has inked a three-year deal with the Barca boys. This is good news because it makes Milan’s transfer target Eto all the more attainable. I would certainly prefer Eto over Henry and he may be a little less costly leaving money open for other transfers. The over key point to the Eto deal is to hopefully try and lure Zambrotta over to the San Siro as well. My mouth waters at the thought of Zambrotta and Oddo pushing forward and whipping in crosses, it would look like the Milan of old with Tassotti and Maldini running the wings.
Simic is rumored to be on the outs with Marseille looking to make a bid for the role-playing defender. I hate seeing defenders leave but he deserves to play and has fallen in the depth chart at Milan; a move is fine by me.
Portugese midfielder Tiago apparently is a target for Milan and Juve (everyone is target the for the Zebras). I can do without, he had a great World Cup last year but he just does not fit in well. I understand that Carlo and company see Seedorf as an aging midfielder but Tiago is not exactly the answer, but then again neither is Gourcuff so something does need to be done to fill in the left midfield spot.
The Milan-Inter war of words has turned another corner this time with Ronaldo calling nerazzuri fan ingrates. I tend to agree, but this will not be well received by anyone over at Inter FC. Ronaldo says he was hurt emotionally in 2002 and has never experienced such treatment in his whole life, following the loss of the scudetto on the last day of the season. He said that he now has a new lease on life and feels greatly appreciated by his new teammates. All I can say is toughen up big boy because if your skills go south you may be subject to the same treatment.

For all those who’ve just read the above, and whose heart rates have accelerated up to 150bps, Henry did NOT actually sign with Barca (sigh of relief from a Madrid fan), and might in fact pursue legal action with the magazine that made the claim: ‘France Football’ magazine.
As far as prefering Eto’o based on lesser signing costs, Gianfranco, while I follow the logic, I think that if AC has ANY chance at scooping up Henry, they should do everything they can to secure a transfer. I would give that same advice to pretty much any other club as well. Henry’s style of football, and his versatility in the forward position brings a powerful new dynamic to almost any team that could get their hands on him. I don’t want to downsell Eto’o, who’s a goalscorer with an instinct that rivals that of van Nistelrooy and Drogba (I suppose that after Inghazi proved him self on the European stage, I could include him on that list as well), but he is not nearly as much of a presence on the rest of the pitch as Henry is. Furthermore, Eto’o is being made out to be somewhat of a morale/team wrecker by the Spanish press after all of the infighting that’s broken out in Barca, mostly with him in the center. While that may or may not prove true (the Catalans are quick to point fingers when no silverware doth their giants provide), it’s a stark contrast to Henry’s character: he’s proven loyal and crucial to the spirit and character of his team in North London, and for that reason he just might let another summer full of trade rumors become just that - rumors and nothing more. I’d certainly be interested to see what kind of impact he’d have in Italy, though.

Nice point on the Eto locker room troubles, France Football magazine has jumped the gun a bit but a few other sites have followed suit as well. As for Henry as player I do agree with you in his ability but I feel a clash with Kaka, who may join your side, would be imminent if the two if them were slotted behind a lone striker or in one one system. I would be interested if Henry would find success in his second tour of the boot.
