Milan 1 Juventus 1
By: Gianfranco | May 11th, 2009Oh the things I could say…
-Did Iaquinta push Flamini on his goal…sure…
-Did Favalli get a soft red…sure…
-Did Pato get pulled down in the box right before the red…sure…
-Funny how Milan and Juve draw after some dubious calls which is exactly what Inter needed…

Now if you are looking for me to elaborate on those points, than you haven’t learned anything from me in the past two years. I can fill you with cliches to bring my point home: “that’s why the ball is round”, “that’s why you play the game”, or “all these calls even out in the end”. As we have learned many times in the past, if you score the goals needed to win, than bad calls don’t do affect you. If you score goals nothing affects you, momentum is on your side and your opponents are buried, plain and simple.
What we should say is Milan didn’t play well enough to earn three points, but on the flip side neither did Juventus. It was a classic grudge match, hard fought, well challenged, and like last year’s nil-nil draw really lacked a player or players willing to push their team the extra mile. Kaka, Pato, and even Pippo were non influential. Seedorf was a mess, and Beckham was lost space, even Ronaldinho tried admirably hard to no avail. Where the defenses that good? Were midfielders that commanding? Nope on both fronts, it was two teams not able to create many quality chances and struggling to find rhythm or groove.
Credit to Ranieri for sticking to his guns and earning a very hard fought point. Cries for ADP and Gio at the start went by the wayside, as the lineup was bruising in an attempt to out muscle Milan. Carletto countered with Flamini’s pace at right back, Seedorf alonside Kaka, and Pippo up top, a lineup that has done well in the past weeks, but not on this day. As the game wore on Carletto tried to inject pace, but yet again Ranieri’s seemingly immovable object stood strong with Pato and Kaka being suffocated from any form of positive movements.

As I watched this game I descended into some strange fog, I was watching but not really enthralled, almost out of body, as I watched two teams really struggle for possession, but also for something else something more. Like two old prize fighters punching their way through a match more because than had to than because they wanted to win, an almost surreal feeling of two teams who had come into this game with very different circumstances, but both knowing and feeling that it was somehow some symbolic end. Even the ever calm Maldini seemed to be aware of this external force as he grabbed Chiellini by the neck, an outburst the likes of which I have never seen from our Captain.
Then moments later as Paolo helped up ADP and embraced him I almost felt as though the game was no longer as significant as the potential loss of two of Calcio’s greatest stars weighed heavily, and two teams on the threshold of a new beginnings. Granted Carletto may stay and Ranieri may go, but after Inter’s fourth straight scudetto, second if you really want to split hairs, both Milan and Juventus are in for change. It ended in a draw, but it ends in a far different circumstance…

just one point – while i do not want favalli to stay for another season, saying that he was crap this season is just not true – he is one of the main reasons that we have one of the lowest goals against records in the league – yes, he is slow, ponderous and has made mistakes but so does every other defender (this does not include paolo tho!) and his ‘experience’ has saved us on a number of occasions this year…
so thanks a ton, old man and please retire nowPosted from

lol @ Sam!
Yup, its kinda crazy to have to admit it, but at times this season he has saved our skin a number of times!
Balanced out, of course, with his giving away of freekicks in the dying mins when we are 1-0 up!!!
Thanks Fav, but you need to let Milan return to the top!

sam, while I appreciate his contribution, your mentality is the reason he plays in Milan. The thoughts going on in Ancelotti or Galliani’s head are ‘oh he’s 37, he’s decent, let’s play him.’
The problem with this mentality is that Milan isn’t a team that should just ‘do well’. Milan are a top club and need players of a high calibre. Sure Favalli might be useful, but he is not gonna win us championships, even if he’s a back-up.

uh huh moka….i dont want to keep him and if i had my way, we would have never signed him on in the first place and even if we did, would have ensured we signed another defender to play instead of him this season….what i objected to was peeps saying that he was crap this season – actually, he wasnt – he did pretty good and we are second today also due to his contribution – that’s all – dont like him, dont want him but am not going to deny his contribution to the club in an year when we didnt have nesta or any replacements and needed someone to step in

Yea, I appreciate his contribution, although again, I hate to see him play. But then again, it’s not his fault really, so I was being harsh.
It’s clear that to win championships, especially against the likes of Man Utd, Chelsea and Barca today, you need an insane amount of depth in your team. Milan’s got depth in the middle and up in front, but the back is a disaster. Milan need 2 SOLID defenders in the summer before even thinking about competing with the European powerhouses.

lol!
but your right man, when i look at the backline of Milan we are sorely lacking and it feels like an eternity since Stam left us
I think Nestas as good as gone, do we want/need a CB with a back problem…..erm NO!
Its the goals we have leaked this year that have really hurt us, upfront, if u look at the fiugures we are looking smartish
But someone please pour some quick drying cement over our backline!

besides the backline, i think we need to have some depth upfront as well – pippo cannot start every game next year – that leaves us with pato and boriello (if he’s ever back) – alternating with playing kaka upfront sometimes (not in favour of this tho)

LBs: Jankulovski, Zambrotta, Antonini, Kaladze
RBs: Zambrotta, Flamini, Bonera, Darmian, Mattioni, Antonini
CBs : Silva, Bonera, Nesta, Kaladze— assuming we keep Antonini, Kaladze, and say goodbye to Favalli
We’re covered well in the full-back positions. I’m confident of Janks/Zambrotta/Flamini and full-backs really don’t have to be top-notch. Realistic suggestions for centerbacks:
Santacroce, Mexes, Zapata, Ferrari?

Yea true Sam, but we might also get back Paloschi.

has anyone watched the aubameyang kiddos play? pierre-emerick has scored 5 in 15 for dijon…and what about the poor umunegbu who’s playing for serieC1

hmm, would love to get him back…confession – have a softer spot for him over pato actually (i know am going to get brickbats for that one!)
moka, i would actually not be averse to keeping senderos as well – he has been getting better, seems to have a lot of respect for the shirt and is only 24…Posted from

(whisper whisper) – the fact that he’s swiss is a point in his favour as well!

sam I really doubt they’re good enough. The future is in Paloschi and Pato. Can’t talk much about potential midfielders like Strasser or Viudeuz b/c well, have we seen them play? NO!

Haha yea sam I’d keep him as back-up, but like 4th back-up. Again, you have to realize that Milan needs to compete with the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd, Barca. Silva seems very promising, but again, is rather unproven and therefore is a risk. We need a big name signing in the back PLUS a strong back-up player, AND keep Senderos.

Man all those comments took me a while to read through.
First @ Avia – I totally agree with you regarding the attitude towards friendlies. The attitude and type of play we take into these games is the type we will take in to meaningful games. Don’t tell me i’m wrong cause i’ve been watching the disinterest in some of these players for at least 2 seasons now.
Regarding the Ancelotti situation – I’ll be the first to say that he’s screwed up large this year with tactics….BUT!!!! It would be a HUGE mistake to fire him without a quality replacement waiting in the wings. Not Van Basten or Rijkaard.
Regarding Beckham – We are the laughing stock of Europe as someone mentioned for having him on the team. Not saying we should keep him or get rid of him. Just stating the fact.
Regarding Berlu – His reputation is taking a beating. To openly critize his coach is stupid, even if he does have issue with him. Especially when he refuses to spend any big bucks to get the proper players makes sure the team can successfully achieve the the goals it stated to all of us at the begginning of the year.
Last point (BTW thanks 4 reading all this) SEEDORF IS UTTER GARBAGE. I’m sure this is what is pissing off Berlu. Seeing Ronnie on the bench (whose sucked recently also) for that underachieving has been who gets marched out EVERY SINGLE game regardless of his performance. If only Carlo had put that same type of trust Gourcuff.

“Regarding Beckham – We are the laughing stock of Europe as someone mentioned for having him on the team. Not saying we should keep him or get rid of him. Just stating the fact.”
If a player helps you win games, which Beckham has done, does it matter what other clubs think? Not to mention I very rarely hear Milan in the same name as real laughing stocks such as Man City, not sure where this notion comes from but it doesnt seem to be the truth at least for me. What to talk about laughing stocks, there are plenty more around Italy and abroad! Any help on this point would be greatly appreciated…

It’s about how Milan love to buy the ‘have-beens’, i.e. former Golden Boys. We did it with Ronaldo a couple years ago and this year with Dinho, Sheva and Becks. (I know Becks didn’t win a golden ball but you get the gist)

so in that case we were laughing stocks long before we bought Beckham, because before him we purchased a slew of Brazilian has beens…rivaldo, ronaldo, and ronaldinho…not to mention the fact that Beckham is busting his hump to play in WC10 makes him far less of hasbeen than the names I mentioned before him…

btw Nesta has started training with the group as reported on the official website… this doesnt obviously guarantee that we can expect atleast a game from him this year. However, its a good sign, that hes feeling no pain and that his rehabiliation is on track. We might have another friendly scheduled just before our last league game and i hope to see nesta play in that. atleast one half with silva.

This friendly will only happen if by that time we are confirmed second place holders as said by Galliani on the official website.Posted from
