i favour 4-2-3-1 over the christmas tree as well but i don’t think it plays to the strengths of the lineup. i personally thought some promise was shown by the early changes made today, and borriello could have easily done some serious damage had he started the match. but that last change, pato for flamini, was a stupid act of desperation. not what i had in mind when i suggested a brazillian-type formation.
milan has long played three holding midfielders including pirlo, and this is a defensive luxury that slows down its attacking play so much to me. if it weren’t for seedorf, milan’s midfield passing game would be total shite compared to other contemporary world class clubs, especially when pirlo is on an off-day. pirlo’s tackling has greatly improved and it’s an outdated notion to suggest that he still needs support from the likes of rino and ambrosini. what he needs is the opportunity to provide inspired passes, which the christmas tree can’t provide. we saw today that one centre back just made sure he kept one arm on sheva at all times and the entire attacking threat of a.c. milan was squashed. donadoni recognized this need with italy and used pirlo very well (although his original 4-3-3 is probably ill-suited to milan). what pirlo needs is passing options and a midfield where his teammates are not situated directly in front of him in the centre of the midfield, so he has room to creep up (which he himself has said is what he needs, and which he was doing all match today). this way, my boy can spray the ball forward to the four attacking players or get in and do some one-touch passing. it’s for these reasons that i don’t think 4-2-3-1 is ideal.
i’m actually an enormous fan of rino, ambrosini, and emerson, but if milan is really looking forward, younger and more versatile midfielders need to be brought into the mix. flamini is strong defensively and never stops running like the gattuso of old, he has good positioning and makes intelligent runs into the box like ambrosini has been doing time and again, and he keeps up the pace of passing in the midfield like the emerson i remember from countless important matches. flamini didn’t have his best match today, but don’t forget that he was second in the premiership for completed passes last year and that should tell you something about his maturity and his ability to partner with someone like pirlo. we need to get rid of the baggage in midfield; it’s really nothing more than a useless safety blanket for a team with over a thousand international caps among them.

Time for the manager to lay down the law to R80 and perhaps Sheva - get fit first, then we’ll talk about playing in a league game.

Believe me yesterday against Palermo, a new skipper, even with all of our injuries I expected at least 2-1.
So I was in shock, but now that Milano has waaay too much talentino to not come back.
As does la Roma!
But like I said on our board dui minuti ago, THERE WILL BE NO EASY MATCHES IN SERIE A THIS SEASON.
It is waaay more compeitive top to bottom as opposed to last year.
Ok maybe Chievo but the mid table teams have stacked up and are ready for the fight.

Hana, I was able to watch Milan games 2 year ago while in Kenya, of course there was more coverage of the epl, but I have managed to catch some serie a games. Good luck and kudos to you for the great work you’re doing.

I think Rijkaard would be a good fit for you guys. He knows how to play some good attacking football. Donadoni isn’t a bad coach either. He just really shouldn’t've coached the Azzurri with almost no club experience

it’s a creative, attacking mindset that milan needs to adopt. i’m nervous about nesta, but defending is simply not the big issue. we got burned on the flanks by genoa because they were playing a formation designed to counter attack that way, and because we didn’t play the ball into their own box to put their counter attack on the back foot. these enormous holes we’re seeing in defence are because we’re not attacking or scoring. we do have, let’s see… the best defender the human race has yet produced, and three match-fit hard-tackling alternatives in bonera, senderos, and kaladze, so there’s very little else that can be done there. i say use guys like jankulovski, antonini, and zambrotta as fullbacks so we can keep our width (a major weakness of 4-2-2-2), and have them push up like nobody’s business.

I agree Daniele and I love that Serie A is so competitive and on any given day, any team could pull a victory over another. It’s just much harder to appreciate when your team falls victim to these clubs.
3m, I don’t think the 4-2-3-1 is ideal per say, but considering our options, I think it’s the best route. Perhaps in defense, it can revert back to a 4-2-2-2 to clog up that middle, but in attack, our fullbacks don’t always get the job done width wise, so relieving the pressure for them to always go up and assist the attack could be key. And by relieving said pressure, we could probably defend against counterattacks better. You bring up some interesting points though about one Andrea Pirlo. His tackling has definitely gotten loads, LOADS better in recent years. I sometimes wonder how he would be if he were played further up in the field. I think he’s fine in his deep-seated role, he was unleashing some shots from distance today, but could be interesting.

Yeah Nina? Good deal, thanks for the heads up and sentiments dear, I appreciate it. I’m hopeful for Serie A coverage, but I’m expecting the EPL to be absolutely massive there.

as capitano said a week ago, we’ve started this season where we ended the last one, and thats not a good thing.
we bring the ball up the field, then devoid of ideas, try to force in a cross or through ball with both strikers marked, the defense recovers the ball and counterattack. and it bites us in the ass every time.
the only time we’ve played well was that second half vs. bologna, and that was because we attacked as soon as we turned over the ball. we were direct, we looked for ronaldinho on the left and he worked his magic.
today, it wasnt the case. we tried the short passing game, but if nobody is moving into space or creating space for others to move into, a short passing game will get you nowhere.
carlo needs to get his act together, this is beyond ridiculous. i am getting extremely frustrated, he needs to work on our defensive issues, and our defense starts from when we lose the ball trying to force a pass into the box that ends up with the other team. if we keep losing the ball with hopeful passes, we’re always going to get caught on the counterattack, when no defensive organization can help you at all.
pirlo gave away too many long balls to nowhere, seedorf was useless, kaka’ was the only playing like he gave a damn. and ambrosini is a fucking dead weight, he gets the stupidest fucking yellows all the time. why the hell did carlo take a more mobile and dynamic flamini off for pato when you have a yellow-carded and unbelievably slow ambrosini on the pitch?
and what about favalli? with all due respect, why the fuck is favalli playing??? you cannot have a 37 year old plying his trade in a fullback position, especially when we play with such a narrow formation. this is ridiculous.
carlo’s decision making is becoming a massive problem, and if he doesnt get his act together soon, hes gonna take the shits soon enough.
if anything, i hope rijkaard will be our next coach, if carlo leaves. rijkaard may not be a control freak, but he certainly plays to the qualities of his players and he can get the best out of them.
but come on carlo ancelotti, wake up and go back to the drawing board, if you cannot motivate yourself to change, how can you expect to motivate anybody else to change?

Maldini is indeed splendid. Nesta’s a marvel…
So was Baresi, but I don’t think he forms the basis for a competitive defensive squad in 2008, either.

Here I am..with the same dumbfounded expression on my face..

One of the things I noticed in the first half was that the ball was not going through Ronaldinho anywhere near as much as during the Bologna game. On the other hand, Genoa was marking tightly and energetically and I’m not sure that Ronnie could have done much magic near the box even if he saw the ball more.

maybe its best to chalk this one up to fatigue from the international break

This is getting nowhere. If we can’t score (which is just outrageous for a team with the deadliest attacking players on paper) , why don’t we just hold on to a scrappy 0-0 draw and secure a valuable point. As a Milanello fan, it feels as though someone has wrenched the enthusiasm in me for the start of the new season.
That apart, the entire team now would be getting a full week time to work and gel together, after a suffocating international break last week and most of the players fit. Carletto should better get his act on the defense which is killing everyone.
I’m eagerly waiting for the next fixture against the Table toppers Lazio at Sansiro. I would’nt have an ounce of patience should the team not get a resounding victory. Even two Champions League crown in the Manager’s CV would not act as a bait to support him.

…absolutely. Genoa hustled like crazy and played with great energy throughout the game. Lots motivation there…

So I have a question: How much power do you think Ancelotti really has at the club? Does he really determine the line-up? I only ask because I read statements like this in the press:
“Ancelotti might’ve infuriated President Silvio Berlusconi and general manager Galliani today when he substituted summer signings Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko at half-time.”
http://www.daily-calcio.com/index.php?option=news&task=viewarticle&sid=17957The truth is, IMO you guys played much better after the half with Ronnie and Sheva off. Isn’t that more important?

It’s hard to imagine any reasonably soccer-savvy individuals protesting those two substitutions.

That was an idiotic statement that clearly isn’t true. Anyone who was watching the match could tell that the two weren’t playing well (especially Sheva, whose touches I could count on one hand), and changes were needed.

I watched the first half and then went back to bed…I was thinking it could only get worse and I was right.

the only reason sheva got d start is due to the fact that he scored for ukraine… i cant believe i wasted my money 2 go see the derby.. it will be my first time at san siro and i will probably see our most embarrasing loss ever..

wow - just got back, saw the score, read the comments - wondering why i cant be like the chelsea fans who took their trade to citeh once the big bucks started rolling there…..
since i cant and am stuck with the red and black for life, guess just need to swallow yet another loss and look for positives for the rest of the season…
i think we do need to sack ancelotti, (not because of his tactics etc coz i genuinely feel he doesnt have much of an option, he didnt get who he asked for and had to make do with berlu and fester’s fantasy boys), but coz he carries no weight with the two dum dums…and maybe getting a new coach would drive the point of getting young replacements into their head…we need someone like wenger damn it…Posted from

*I’m not very happy with current results.
with that said:I am ALWAYS proud to be a ROSSONERI fan!!!!!
The team looks flat out there, nobody is playing aggressively.
They still need time to get to know each other… when they do come together WE WILL BE THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE WORLD.!FORZA MILAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
