Can They Coexist?
By: Gianfranco | November 18th, 2008A while back, before Dinho was a member of AC Milan, we briefly discussed the potential for Dinho and Kaka to coexist and play together for AC Milan. I was a bit tentative to say that the picture looked bright, but one had to figure that two players that talented should be able to find away to make things work. A few months into the Serie A season, I think it is time to revisit this issue again.
We should start by discussing a few of the issues that we should have brought up ages ago about our newest Milanista, Ronaldinho:
- World Cup 2006: When the world’s best squads travelled to Germany in 2006 the experts were pretty fixated on a squad containing Ronaldinho, Kaka, Ronaldo, Adriano and Robinho, quite honestly the single greatest attacking force in the history of the World Cup. We all know what happened after that, Italy hoisted the cup, and Brazil went home after a quarterfinal loss to France. That Brazilian squad lacked the luster and unity that past Selecao teams have shown on their runs to countless WC finals. I wouldn’t say that Kaka and Dinho were the sole reason for this team’s failure, but it was one of the many factors that played a part.
- Lionel Messi: I would consider Little Lionel to be the closest in terms of style of play to our own Ricky Kaka. Granted Kaka is stronger on the run, and Messi stronger on the ball, but these guys are both right sided, roaming, extremely dangerous game changing players. I recently asked myself and wondered if the rise of Lionel as Barcelona’s main man was and had anything to do with the decline of Ronaldinho’s presence on the pitch. Messi’s rise seemed to coincide with Dinho’s fall and if Dinho couldn’t raise Messi’s game and seemed to somewhat stifle it, can it be he is doing the same thing to Kaka.

-The Gerrard vs. Lampard Debate: Can two very similar players play together and succeed on the same pitch. This argument seems to get the most discussion surrounding England’s two central midfielders and has at times left coaches and fans scratching their heads and wishing one of those players is left off the bench. Do we have the same issue with the Rossoneri? Dinho is scoring, but Kaka is not, and more alarmingly Milan can’t seem to have a goal outburst that despite the past few season’s lack of success they did find ways to put 3-5 goals up on occasion. Lazio was the last game that saw Milan win comfortably, and as Carletto has leaned more towards the XMAS tree with Dinho and Kaka behind the lone striker, the scoring has seemed to diminish. Carletto will have to decide what exactly the best course of action is for this squad, but it is better to play the tinkerman now instead of when the games start to become more and more valuable.
As you can see there are issues here that when closely looked at leaves us wondering if in fact Kaka’s lack of success stems directly from the inclusion of Ronaldinho. Without some experimentation we as tifosi may never know unless Carletto plays the carousel game and gauges the team’s success. Please don’t take this discussion as my call for one of these players to be benched; they are both excellent players who as you can see from the video below are to be considered as world class. But despite their individual abilities it may very well be that they are incapable of building off that success in the same jersey…

they have struggled to score goals even when they have had two strikers and only one of Dinho-Kaka. In other games they have created lots of chances with both of them there but wasted most of them. I don’t we can conclude on that basis that they can’t work well together. Just ask yourself this, would you rather Kaka in the starting lineup or Pippo?
Besides, this is Italy, where 1-0 is considered the perfect score.Posted from

I kind of agree with you,but thats more because I dont know if thats the problem. But the only solution to the problem is to bench 1 of them and play 2 strikers and see what happens. Ancelotti is really stupid not to vary the formation occasionaly. I think he should try it in the Portsmouth game at least,if he is reluctant to try it in the league.

im glad im not ancelotti, this issue is what we all dont want to ask ourselves and analyze it closely. we’re just hoping that “it” would just work out. because on paper it doesnt really look good for both of them. i somewhat agree with you gianfranco on your last point. we might have to go down that road and just drop one/rotate…
oh yah, ps. TWO strikers!!!

when pirlo is fit, I doubt the three of them can be slotted into the field together, one will have to be benched. One place in midfield is always reserved for gattuso. dinho may play as a striker for all we know.

We might have to drop one/rotate, yes, but that does not mean that Kaka and Dinho cannot coexist. It all depends on the opposition and how they play.

we are creating quite a few chances. kaka has lost his scoring touch thats all. Dinho had a fantastic goal rate at barca and kaka himself scores a lot so we wont miss a striker if both these two play. But pato and kaka should train hard and start burying the chances as they come

And this is a fantastic topic gian. As usual top notch from the best writer on the offside. Its great that here the internal workings of the team is discussed and argued for and against and not a blog where god worship of a player takes place and nothing else *cough* DDR *cough*

lol, i hav 2 concur wiv the last couple of comments!
I havent input much recently but Gian, your keeping this blog nicely on the boil!
Gian – i clearly rmember the pre-Dino discussions, and the main benefit of havn him join (imo) was that it wood save us 4m running Kaka in2 the ground!
Well it looks like Kaka could do with a rest and Dinos form warrants inclusion over his team mate.
But just look at us Milanistas! We’ve got OPTIONS!!!!!!

why we should pay whatever for this guy. in january!! though i know we wont, galliani just said Milan wont be making any moves until the summer. we should get Thiago Silva and Santacroce, then we’d be done for the next 10 years in defense. and get Benzema while we’re at it, so we’ll be okay in the attack for the next decade as well (With pato).

There is no two players on the earth that cant play well together if played in the right formation.
Brazil lost the world cup because they basically tried to play a 4-1-5, way too many attacking players. Lampard and Gerrard are so very similar but I think with some grunt men behind them in midfield like Hargreaves and with fullbacks creating the width in attack Lamps and gerrard could play together.
Kaka and Ronnie can play together we just have to get the right formation. I like players being able to specialise in one role, but i think ronnie and kaka have been typecast and I think we all need to remember that these two guys got to the top because they have a good all round game. I think if Kaka and Ronnies roles are expanded a bit theyll be able to play together

Kaka lately has left me frustrated but when ‘Dinho has a crappy game Kaka is usually a whole lot better. But when ‘Dinho does good Kaka has a bad game. I don’t know what’s going on but they better figure it out fast. We need to take down those nerazzurri ladri.

my ideal formation would be, Borriello (Pato) upfront. with Dinho playing both 2nd striker and helping Kaka in the middle, Kaka covering more over the left side, with rotations to screw the opponents for good. and the 3 midfielders, from, Gattuso, Flamini, Seedorf, Ambrosini & NOT Emerson.

shit, was really praying for kaka to score last night – that would have boosted his confidence – but he missed a sitter yet again – aargh

…yes, Kaka looked a little frustrated against Portugal, at least for the 70 minutes that I watched.

fet are you sugguesting a 4-3-1-1-1? It sounds like that…
Sushan thank you for the comments, I really appreciate it. I am going through a very busy spell at both work and personally and I it has been hard to to keep the topics pumping, but something as intriguing as this was worth the dicussion.

I Kno, i kno its only a sliver of a chance but has any1 read the story in 2days Corriere dello Sport regarding Milan attempting to sign Ramos from Madrid?? (again….i kno! but im so worried about that glass like backline of ours that i cant help but wishfully dream that we may land him!)
Any1???

I like Ramos, but I think he’s strongest as an attacking full-back. I haven’t really seen him play as center-back and I heard he’s really suspect there. So, I’d rather Santacroce, or Zapata, or Mexes.

u know what the strange thing is avia, that our defence has actually held up quite well (knocks on wood) inspite of all our dire predictions at the start…the lasw few matches and post, we all have been bitching about the striker issue and not about the defence! what a difference!

lol @ Sam
Yup yor rite.
But i have 2 b honest, i watched the 1st leg between Juve & Madrid and wat i noticed pained me.
Juves backline workd as a complete unit, a whole.
Were as our defence feels like the four guys work independantly of each other, they dont cover well enuff 4 each other, get caught outta position, dont coordinate the offside trap as well as Juves backline.
Against Cheivo we were lucky wen Favalli suddnly inexplicably runs outta postion, gets caught out and the rest of the defnce have to deal with having to clear the ball, it shoodnt be like this!
Its tru Sam that our defnce has held up well but im puttin sum of it down to bad finishn by opposition strikers (theyre mayb takn tips 4m our own 4wards lol!)
If u count the number of times Abbiati has had to pull out a super save and the number of times wer u’ve watched the ball shooting over Abbiatis head, im cringn & wondern why our defenders arent shuttn down the opposition quick enuff.
