A Tale of Two Captains
By: Gianfranco | May 22nd, 2009In one corner you have the Roman “Emperor” and in the other you have the King of Milan…in one corner you have a man finally stepping away from the game and another who just won’t leave…in one corner you have class and in the other you have conceited…in one corner you have every piece of silverware a club captain can win and in the other you have the one and only trophy that was truly deserved to our Hero…
Tifosi di Roma will always cite their grand captain, but as he takes the pitch this Sunday on the day that the San Siro will say goodbye to the Greatest Captain to ever play the game, the Greatest defender to ever play the game, and ultimately one of the Greatest players to play the game, you can’t help but get sense of perspective as to how grandiose the career of Paolo Maldini has been. In fact the comparison is virtually nonexistent, and you are left with this highbrow feeling of is there even a comparison? I am sure Roma fans can argue, but Milan fans can smile and nod knowing where the truth lies.
I have been hard on Roma, I won’t deny it, I always have, but rightfully so. They had their chance this year to prove their ability, to hang with the big boys, and claim a stake in Serie A’s big four. Instead they did what any good little brother does when big brother is back town; cry, whine, and play themselves out of the CL. If you thought a year without the CL was devastating to AC Milan then for Roma it will be crippling. Transfers, prestige, and money all lost making next season all the more challenging, I would say I feel for them, but frankly I can’t and don’t, and though I could say I told you so, I find it easier to have pity.
I will stop there because this occasion is far to grand to bog down with my feelings toward AS Redcard I mean Roma. On Sunday the San Siro will be the stage for the final home game of Il Capitano. Granted I feel as though as I have prepared my whole life for this game, but never thought it would actually happen. Never thought I would have to come to grips with this match, this moment, and this reality. As I pour over stats: the matches, the victories, and even the losses, as I read the testimonials of teammates who see the importance and magnitude of this match, I ask myself what better motivation can anyone anywhere need to play this upcoming match. How can any Rossoneri player not want to give back a small fraction of what Paolo Maldini has given to them, the club, the city and calcio!? Frankly this game is a must win, Milan locks in second place and waves goodbye to Paolo Maldini with a victory and hopefully a lap of honor never before seen since the likes of Franco Baresi.

As for the match Milan are coming off a pitiful performance at the Fruilli. Arguably the worse performance of the New Year, and they will have to rebound. The ever burning question is always two strikers or one, and if it is one who will it be? We can’t forget the Pato show when we visited the Olimpico, but his form of late has left room for improvement. Roma’s defense last week was as leaky as they come, and two strikers may prove a problem for the “World Class” (on a side note, doesn’t one have to earn regular National teams caps to be World Class!? Just a thought.) Mexes and company. Pirlo will also need to be on form as his possession and passing will keep the ball away from the Rossoneri kryptonite man of Mirko Vucinic. I will admit the Balkan man does give me nightmares, always has, I can still see his goals against Milan, but one has to think that the atmosphere of this game should go a long way in helping Paolo keep both Vucinic and the “deity” of Rome under wraps. My old friend Danielle DeRedCard found a way to get booked and suspended for this match as well, despite his “World Class” schedule, to miss out on this match; it is all well and good for Milan though as it hopefully opens space for our boys to operate in the midfield.
As always no prediction here, but just the mere though that this match will be final time Maldini pulls on the Red and Black at the San Siro should be more than enough for teammates, coaches, and fans…
Forza Milan e per oggi, domani e per sempre FORZA PAOLO!!!

But yeah, you guys are pretty fucked defensively next season. No Paolo, no Nesta (admit it, he’s done), and you’re losing the great Phillipe Senderos…
A lot will be expected from Thiago Silva. And hopefully Kaladze can play like the champion he is and not like the player that has regressed in the past year. We have also really missed Bonera. Where has he been, this entire time? He was supposed to return from injury a while ago, but havent heard anything about that in a while.

Gianfranco, I used to consider you a decent writer, even though your knowledge of the club and of football in general has often been slightly lacking. You made up for your tenuous grasp it with effort and frequent content, I suppose, but you then wrote this bitter assault and truly slighted our club’s reputation for having classy, down to earth supporters.
Read what the Roma blogger wrote–he truly came out the better man. It’s a good thing that you’ll never go near the San Siro, lest you take a seat from a more deserving fan.

Roma supporter here, not even going to buy into the comparisson of Totti and Maldini, cos I respect them both too much.
It will be a very sad day at the San Siro today, we lose a true legend, and I feel that is a severe injustice that he has never won a World Cup or a Balloon D’or, especially when Cannavaro got both in the same year.
Maldini, thank you for all you have brought to the sport and I speak for everyone when I say I hope you still have a role in Calcio in the years to come.
As for the post in itself, it is full of errors and hypocracy, but I wont delge into that, as it wouldnt be fair to the occasion.
Grazie Paolo.

Roma tifosi never cease to amaze me. You personally attack me, which doesnt even bother me anymore because you clearly dont read the blog or the comments. We have tributed Maldini every Monday for almost two years and now you want to talk about a tribute and a farewell when not even Maldni wants one. He has another game left after this one, and in typical Roma fashion, you are trying to make this one more important than the next. What makes me feel even more vindicated is that none of you seem to realize that every thing I said in that post above is a retort to something your beloved tifosi have said…you claimed mexes to be world class, you claim Totti to be a god, yet here you say he is not even close to Maldini, and finally you claim your club can hang with the big boys, wake up call…as I said before, say what you want about me, I dont care, you came here you read my blog, and you have your opinions, and frankly I respect them, far more than I can say for you.

Yeah, well lets end this here. We can enjoy Maldini’s last home game, instead of arguing.

Its not deafening silence,Sergio. Arguing with Roma fans is a waste of time.

Since December of 07 we have commerated maldini every Monday. I still can’t believe the gall..shows how much you really pay attention. Commentators and bloggers, inter, juve, and others, contributed where was chris then?!

You can compare Maldini and Totti, seeing as both are considered legends and both have been long-time captains for their teams. Just as Maldini means so much to Milan fans, I’m sure Totti means a lot to Roma fans. I don’t see why people are arguing about a comparison, or a lack of a comparison. I’m not gonna take sides because frankly I’m too tired to check out who said what, but again, the arguments I’ve read are pathetic, and the comments certain Roma fans have been making are just ridiculous.
Anyway, when there’s a decent argument to have with you Roma fans, I will make sure I give my 2 cents, but for now, FORZA MILAN and GRAZIE PAOLO. Looking forward to the match.

‘The Milan blog needs someone with more respect for opposition, brains about football and overall class to post articles here instead of this drivel.’
As a regular here at the Milan offside, I am proud of our blogger, and I believe his articles are class.

To each his own, indeed. I might not necessarily agree with the way he’s bashed Roma in this article, but it’s his opinion, and everyone is entitled to one. You guys just can’t seem to respect it, and instead you decide to attack him personally, which isn’t surprising and is typical for you people.

Sergio, I think that you have established the fact that you are an idiot. Now do us all a favour and get lost.

I love how everyone always says to each his own and then vehemently attacks the opposition’s opinion.
Apparently freedom of speech is only applicable when people are saying things you agree with.

Milan fan here, and I do feel sad now for having gianfranco represent us on the site.
Roma fans might be deluded and all, but they didn’t come here attacking Il Capitano. gian might have been doing Monday writeups for years, but he should have done a lot better for the man’s last game at San Siro.
A pointless and uncalled-for attack on Totti, and Roman fans STILL didn’t insult anyone first and people like Kamran were just politely pointing out how the whole flaming could have been avoided. Instead, they get called juvenile and get a pile of insults hurled at them for being just polite. Anyone can swear on the net, it doesn’t require any guts to do it.
Massimo, thanks for pointing out that not all Milan fans are classless like gf. I hope the Romanisti I mentioned read your comments.
The whole point is, this war of words shouldn’t have been taking place on Milan blog right before he plays the last in his city. I’m 100% sure no Romanista would have started the war in comments comparing Totti to Maldini if the post hadn’t done it first.

LMFAO! I was emailed by a friend to come and read this low-level piece of writing that Gianfranco wants to make into a comparison. In truth, there is none.
The bottom line is that Maldini is GREAT, and Totti is GREAT. In addition, Chris is not only great, but has class and knows how to give respect to an opposite legend.
The writer for this blog……..oh boy, its best to remain silent and let people at his level either agree with his comments or try to argue his weak-minded points.

Inham, I salute you for your last post. Maybe you and the other Milanisti should come to an agreement, which is that a sober-minded writer should take over this blog. I think it should be you.
Cheers!

Hey GF, why did you block my previous post?
Can’t take some criticism. Chris’ post is how you should write a tribute to a great man. I hope you are taking notes.

What a sad end to the season for me. Me, as a Lyon and Milan fan will probably have to see the 2 greatest players of all time in their clubs retire at the same time…Juni fortunately scored his 100th goal yesterday.

I’m no Roma fan–I’m livid at the way you disgraced our club in this article. Your attempt at a rebuttal was laughable, and I suggest you delete it lest you damage your wakened credibility further.
Absolute low class, this bilge. Our club should have a better, not bitter blogger.

I had just read the Roma Prematch post, and saw how chris saluted maldini, and then i thought i would come here, A Tale of Two Captains isn’t the way Maldini would have wanted his carer to end… Almost as if The title here was mixed up with the roma one ….. But that last comment by Inham made me feel hope in milanista

didn’t i read someone calling some else coolie in the comments..i understand it had to be removed but i am guessing it would have been better to keep it on just as an example of how cultured some folks can be..

I have no worries about Maldini’s play, but I wonder whether the rest of the team performs well.

wow, never has someone covering a story missed the point so badly. Seriously, how do any Milan fans on the offside read the moron covering Milan? Clearly there are no qualifications or requirements for being a team blogger other than a computer and ISP. Do the world a favor… shhh
