Beckham’s Second Tour of Duty

By: Gianfranco | October 15th, 2009

My discussion with Fadayn on a previous post peaked my interest yet again on a player that seems to be more controversial than any other in recent memory. I by no means want this post to come across as a defense of David Beckham, he is a big boy and can surely defend himself. Yes I am fan, I am OK with it, but I am by no means a fan boy and will start out by saying very matter of factly that his “celebrity status” does not appeal to me, but his business with me, and now with Milan for another tour of duty, is on the pitch and that is what matters.

His move to MLS was arguably a flop, but the reason for the flop can take two sides. It is Beck’s fault, or it is MLS’s fault. Whatever camp you are in is OK by me, but the task of putting soccer on the map in the US is far bigger than any player, David Beckham or not, is going to succeed in. It is far worse when a league, which I do support and attend games and watch on TV and so on, does little to better the squad around him with solid players and create a team that lacked shape, leadership, and a frankly a defender worth his salt.

David Beckham is what he is, a winger, a right footed specialist who has little to no business coming inside, playing centrally, or being counted on for a slew of goals. The expectations are unreasonable for a man who even in his peak was a bit of a “one trick pony’ albeit a good one, but again he is what he is. You can count him to do his footballing duties, which many players of his lofty stardom level would not do, and that is to dig out tackles, get dirty, and work; all positives for any footballer or even an aspiring player.

What I have always found most intriguing about David Beckham is the way he plays and respects the game, again go ahead and say he does not respect the Galaxy or MLS, but in that same sentence you can also say does MLS respect MLS?? Does MLS respect the game by scheduling games the same night the US plays a qualifier…if you wanted to be taken seriously, then get serious, plain and simple. The bottom line is love or hate this guy he plays with his heart on his sleeve and for the sole purpose of going to South Africa for his country. That is admirable no matter how you look at it. In fact it reminds me of a quote from football pundit Martin Tyler, “You do not retire from your National Team, your National Team retires you.” In a day and age were players, specifically Italians (Nesta and Totti) walked away from their National Teams or worse flip flopping about wanting in or not, this guy is doing everything he can to stay on it. Don Fabio says jump, Beckham says how high!

That desire, will, and determination is more than enough for me to welcome him back to AC Milan. First and foremost he adds much needed depth, and I am not saying he needs to play every game as Carletto did last season. But any contribution would be welcome to a team that appears to be hapless souls kicking the ball about, and ANY injection of passion and heart is a PLUS. Does he have to tear the Serie A up to be successful? NO. My expectations, unlike MLS, are reasonable and realistic, contribute and help this team get some wins, if he does that, then it is a job well done.

I want to share a video that I have shared in the past, but still to this day gives me chills, because frankly this guy was special to fans, clubs, and most importantly his country…

On a side note I want to share this piece to further my grief with ESPN and American Soccer as a whole…

Fadayn, I think Beckham was pretty aggressive for Milan last year in defensive duties, I've seen him make tackles for England as well.
  • k
haha, avia, Gian just got to the question first. :p
  • Hey GF, bit of a weird post. It comes across as damning him with faint praise.

You call him a one-trick pony I agree, although his crossing is now a distant memory.

You say he was a flop in the MLS, I agree.

You say he doesn't respect the Galaxy or the MLS, I agree.

the only thing I'd disagree with is your statement that he "digs out tackles, get dirty, and work" - which i think even the blindest Engerlaaand fan will concede is something Beckham could never be accused of. Honestly find me a video clip of Beckham ever making a tackle??

I think your post agrees mostly with George Best when he said, "He (Beckham) cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right."
  • puzzled as to how clubs like Inter and Juventus and even West Ham for Fucks sake are chasing players like Candreva of Livorno and we are still wallowing away with the likes of Ederson!? Diamanti went to West Ham for pennies...these are players that should at least be on the Milan radar if you want to do things young and on the cheap...

  • what happens when you throw a couple of juventini and an overrated Roma in blue, this...

  • Alessio I cant argue there, and Jovan that is why he needs to go back to doing what he does best...SCOUTING
  • Jovan
Absolutely, Milan's transfer politics haven't made sense ever since we sold Sheva, apart from the two shiny moments of buying kaka and pato which were, oh the irony, mostly leonardo's doing.
  • Anti-capitalists? I thought the 60s were over?

Jovan, Antonio, chill. I don't mind seeing Milan wallow around in mediocrity, but Gallani makes less sense than Secco. All things considered, who's transfers would you take over the last 3-4 years? Even Secco's disaster years were not worse than Gallani's.

    1) Alex, thank you for your background, it all comes clear now. Here's another way to look at exploitation. Football clubs/federations/sponsors are all in each others' pockets when it comes to promoting players in various markets. Ferguson is well aware of the deals his players make -- as well as what percentage ManU gets and what new "markets" they will help the team break into (just as the case with any other team) -- you live in England, have you seen how many ads Giggs has been? No complaints from me, if I have to see advertising at all I enjoy watching the ones featuring football. As for Beckham "putting himself about" England -- England well used his sparkly image to polish their own around the world after having their fans banned from international matches. Beckham did what he was asked for the England team, yes it increased his visibility but I venture to say that it did more to promote the England NT.

    2) Jovan, I would never blame a person's choices on their spouse/partner. Beckham was free and over 21 when he fell in love. Far from hoping his wife would drop her career and settle down and keep house, he's always been clear that part of the attraction was how she went about her work -- the nature of which would have been hard to miss. People love who they love, its not our business.

    3) Gianfranco! Please, don't get too far into the cause of problems when it comes down to footballers and women. Let's just say that we would not enjoy the light in which we see many of our heros -- and the tarnish of their commercial pursuits would seem tame. Best, all around, to just see how these guys are doing on the pitch and leave it at that! ;-)
  • fifaguy
i don't understand why milan needs/wants beckham given that the squad desperately needs young blood.
  • you beat me to it Jovan! The cause of all problems!? Sorry ladies...
  • Jovan
    goddamn women;)
  • Chubby
Becks biggest "mistake" was to take this girl as a wife. From that point on his life changed dramatically, outside of the pitch. And as GF and few others mentioned earlier, few players of the same age bracket are willing to work as hard.
As for his Galaxy stint... I mean Sheva blew it up in Chelsea, Dinho can't do shit in Milan and even youngster like Benzema is on the wrong end of the rotation at Real Madrid. Shouldn't have listened to his wife - hello Sheva.
  • Alex that is why I want England to win the WC, so every English football fan can kiss the ass of an Italian!!! SWEET IRONY!!!
  • alex
all the negative press calcio gets in the english media and now we have capello everyone loves him! hes absolutely class
  • alex
i know gianfranco but with c.ronaldo i dont even waste my time thinking about him as hes just a cheating little bitch.

as much as i despise commercialism i can understand why people do adverts etc as there is a lot of money involved but when people become brands, then i have a real problem respecting them.
i like my players like baresi, maldini, scholes and giggs men who play their football and then thats it
  • Avia, I have to agree with Pera on your posts pure fan!!

As for Chelsea, Carletto will come up huge during the African Nations Cup and then we will earn his true stripes for many Chelsea fans, mine are already sold.

As for subs, I will defend him and say that his options were EXTREMELY limited...considering his starting eleven, his only real attacking option was Ronaldinho and he wasnt even an option, I do agree at times he befuddled, but his options were not always top notch.

Lastly, Cappello is my Cappello!! Love that guy...
  • pera
Lol Avia although i disagree with you in 90% of sentences in last post( :) ) i am simply jubilant when i see that boon energy in your posts like every single time you wrote it from your heart.I mean im reading it and disagreeing and simple have to giggle when a sentence like "u kno, the point where Carlo starts to smoke" appears!
  • pera
  • avia
    :-) Gian

I actually expected k to ask me that question lmao!

To clarify quickly, ******Capello is my Carletto!********

I dont disregard any of Carlos achievements both as a player or coach but i dont want him waved at me like he is a coaching Messiah

If the leads the Azzurri to a WC trophy I would credit him as being one of the most successful managers ever

He did AMAZING things at Milan and i feel that i have shared personal moments of pure joy with him as he lead our guys to glory, his Achilles heel (imo) will always be that he could have done BETTER with the squad at his disposal

Also, his substitutions are bewildering at worst and amateurish at best (i still dont believe the guy can read a game once its underway OR that he can respond quickly or smartly enough when it comes to countering his coaching opponent on the field of play)

I would go as far as saying that I think Leo is better at making subs and trying to chase a game, (u kno, the point where Carlo starts to smoke)

If Chelsea win the CL i wouldn’t credit Carlo (i kno, shocking, isnt it?) as i feel that that squad could win the tournament in auto pilot(which is pretty much what they did under Grant)

PS; How come he is now at Chelsea and still spouting on about OTHER teams!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • pera
One thing is sure-Becks is real pro,he will die on field for team...I like this move we cant lose by having him on field(quality) or off field(money).
  • Alex the reason Fester is bringing him in is because he is cost effective and will try hard, fact of the matter he is the most bang for your buck period...

I am with you on the celebrity thing, but you are treading a thin line when the likes of CRON are not far behind...outside of football it is far worse...
  • alex
and by the way ancelotti came under a lot of critiscism, i probably had a few bad words to say about him, but in all fairness your team has been left to stagnate and the blame has to go on galliani, hes lost his mind
  • alex
im english and live up north gianfranco so believe me when i say ive been force fed beckham for years. the way he has whored himself to the english media is disgusting. no matter how talented a player is when they put themself around like he has i just cant respect them.
hes one of the main protagonists in this whole cult of the celebrity but thats for a different day!

when i say he wanted to crack hollywood i didnt mean films, but just the whole hollywood scene. its clear that beckham and his wife are completely obsessed with being celebrities and thats what drives them.

i dont understand how you can defend him when the only reason he wants to play for you is so he can get to the world cup?? if tottenham called he would pick them over milan. galliani is wasting time and money to loan a 33 year old instead of addressing your very serious state of affairs which i find completely baffling
  • Avia, question for you, if Carletto is Coach of Italy or even say Ivory Coast and wins a WC, will you finally give him credit, finally!?? Especially if he leads Chelsea to a CL?

I hated beckham for almost all of his career until the second half of his last season at Madrid. I personally actually started to like him because even after he was flat out told that he will never play for England, or Real Madrid ever again, he continued to show incredible professionalism (considering the circumstances, and how little professionalism is shown by almost all other big name players in similar circumstances. I am looking at you, ronaldinho)and was actually able to change the mind of Capello. If a stubborn old bastard like Capello admitted that he was wrong about Beckham, how could I not?!

And he played pretty well for us and definitely took pressure of both Pirlo and Kaka on multiple occasions. Obviously is not a long term solution, but is a decent short term one.
  • Alex, Becks made it to Hollywood and Bolliwood long before his MLS move (Goal the Dream Begins and Bend it Like Beckham)...you are making a bigger example out of Becks than CRON and even KAKA who are everywhere as well, just not so much in your face or spoon fed. You are in the US so you get the best of MLS shoving Becks down your throat...

If becks wanted to do movies and quit football he would have done so ages ago...the truth of the matter seems to be he is in for the football as much the media portrays him otherwise...
  • alex
diane it boils my blood when i see sports stars selling whatever they can but beckham has taken it to another level comletely.

lets be honest beckhams career was winding down so he moved to galaxy for the money and to try and crack hollywood.
  • Well said Diane!
  • Diane
Alex, I am also in the tight spot of being a sports fan and anti-capitalist (or even living in this world and being an anti-capitalist, but that's another story!). If you applied your anti-commercialism criteria, there are very few professional athletes you could support. Most aren't as visible, or successful at it, but that's hardly for lack of trying. Beyond that, all of them, even Beckham, represent a drop in the bucket when it comes to those that profiteer off sport.

As to the MLS debate. Beckham's first two seasons here were handled as poorly as can be imagined by just about everyone involved. I don't excuse anyone, but Beckham gets a bit of the benefit of doubt from me based on everything we've seen throughout the rest of a long career -- more importantly, based on his performance this year as part of a more mature team and a manager that seems to able to both sort out and control a situation that no one in MLS had experienced or could have predicted.

As I've said in the past, I always wish players can produce the best they have to offer, whatever that is, for their sakes and for ours. Hopefully with Beckham, that helps Milan.
  • Jovan
alessio...who's talking about unloading flamini? palloschi is half-owned by milan...and beckham's influence last year was positive...your moral mls fan issues are completely irrelevant and your post is based on misinformation.
  • alex
what maradona did for napoli will never be equalled but while he was there he was fined for missing games, training and was infamous for hanging round with the camorra! then he left after serving a 15 month ban in absolute disgrace, the only reason hes still loved is because hes the best player ever cant say the same for lavezzi and co
  • a few months ago a Roma fan told me Mexes was World Class...I disagreed...funny how these things work out...

    http://www.football-italia.net...
  • Avia the game is called Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, and it is well worth it!

As for Napoli, they are/were a club built on South American stars, he should be careful what he says...Diego Maradona may burn his house down!!
  • avia
    LMAO!

    http://www.football-italia.net...

"Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis says he is tired of “careless Argentines” after Ezequiel Lavezzi and Jesus Datolo lost their passports while on international duty"

“First it happened to Datolo, now Lavezzi. We are tired of having to deal with careless Argentines and their scant professionalism,” De Laurentiis said.

This isn't the first time De Laurentiis has complained about the club's South American players.

Last season he told them to spend less time in Napoli's nightclubs and more time on the training ground.

I wonder if De Laurentiis would ever put in a bid for Dinho?? :-)
  • avia
I think we are missing the point here, what i REALLY wana know Gian is.......what was the name of the Western Shootem Up game you rented from the video store??? :-)
  • alex
beckham stands for everything that i despise about the modern game and indeed the world, which is commercialism.

when someone becomes a brand then for me they have sold their souls and deserve absolutely no respect. yes he was a good footballer but certainly not as good as all the adverts make him out to be. at the end of the day hes a footballer nothing more.

hes not all to blame as hes notoriously stupid, i do think the reason he moved to LA galaxy in the first place is his disgusting wife as they need the celebrity status and they ultimately wanted to be a part of the hollywood crowd
  • Luis, BTW, easy on Dinho, if he was a lying egomaniac and banging goals, many of us would turn a blind eye at this point...he is a lost cause period...
