Beckham’s Second Tour of Duty

By: Gianfranco | October 15th, 2009

My discussion with Fadayn on a previous post peaked my interest yet again on a player that seems to be more controversial than any other in recent memory. I by no means want this post to come across as a defense of David Beckham, he is a big boy and can surely defend himself. Yes I am fan, I am OK with it, but I am by no means a fan boy and will start out by saying very matter of factly that his “celebrity status” does not appeal to me, but his business with me, and now with Milan for another tour of duty, is on the pitch and that is what matters.

3cb5f35bce36e651_david-beckham_during_ac_milan_vs_inter_milan_derby
His move to MLS was arguably a flop, but the reason for the flop can take two sides. It is Beck’s fault, or it is MLS’s fault. Whatever camp you are in is OK by me, but the task of putting soccer on the map in the US is far bigger than any player, David Beckham or not, is going to succeed in. It is far worse when a league, which I do support and attend games and watch on TV and so on, does little to better the squad around him with solid players and create a team that lacked shape, leadership, and a frankly a defender worth his salt.

David Beckham is what he is, a winger, a right footed specialist who has little to no business coming inside, playing centrally, or being counted on for a slew of goals. The expectations are unreasonable for a man who even in his peak was a bit of a “one trick pony’ albeit a good one, but again he is what he is. You can count him to do his footballing duties, which many players of his lofty stardom level would not do, and that is to dig out tackles, get dirty, and work; all positives for any footballer or even an aspiring player.

What I have always found most intriguing about David Beckham is the way he plays and respects the game, again go ahead and say he does not respect the Galaxy or MLS, but in that same sentence you can also say does MLS respect MLS?? Does MLS respect the game by scheduling games the same night the US plays a qualifier…if you wanted to be taken seriously, then get serious, plain and simple. The bottom line is love or hate this guy he plays with his heart on his sleeve and for the sole purpose of going to South Africa for his country. That is admirable no matter how you look at it. In fact it reminds me of a quote from football pundit Martin Tyler, “You do not retire from your National Team, your National Team retires you.” In a day and age were players, specifically Italians (Nesta and Totti) walked away from their National Teams or worse flip flopping about wanting in or not, this guy is doing everything he can to stay on it. Don Fabio says jump, Beckham says how high!

That desire, will, and determination is more than enough for me to welcome him back to AC Milan. First and foremost he adds much needed depth, and I am not saying he needs to play every game as Carletto did last season. But any contribution would be welcome to a team that appears to be hapless souls kicking the ball about, and ANY injection of passion and heart is a PLUS. Does he have to tear the Serie A up to be successful? NO. My expectations, unlike MLS, are reasonable and realistic, contribute and help this team get some wins, if he does that, then it is a job well done.

I want to share a video that I have shared in the past, but still to this day gives me chills, because frankly this guy was special to fans, clubs, and most importantly his country…

On a side note I want to share this piece to further my grief with ESPN and American Soccer as a whole…

and by the way ancelotti came under a lot of critiscism, i probably had a few bad words to say about him, but in all fairness your team has been left to stagnate and the blame has to go on galliani, hes lost his mind

Alex the reason Fester is bringing him in is because he is cost effective and will try hard, fact of the matter he is the most bang for your buck period…

I am with you on the celebrity thing, but you are treading a thin line when the likes of CRON are not far behind…outside of football it is far worse…

    :-) Gian

I actually expected k to ask me that question lmao!

To clarify quickly, ******Capello is my Carletto!********

I dont disregard any of Carlos achievements both as a player or coach but i dont want him waved at me like he is a coaching Messiah

If the leads the Azzurri to a WC trophy I would credit him as being one of the most successful managers ever

He did AMAZING things at Milan and i feel that i have shared personal moments of pure joy with him as he lead our guys to glory, his Achilles heel (imo) will always be that he could have done BETTER with the squad at his disposal

Also, his substitutions are bewildering at worst and amateurish at best (i still dont believe the guy can read a game once its underway OR that he can respond quickly or smartly enough when it comes to countering his coaching opponent on the field of play)

I would go as far as saying that I think Leo is better at making subs and trying to chase a game, (u kno, the point where Carlo starts to smoke)

If Chelsea win the CL i wouldn’t credit Carlo (i kno, shocking, isnt it?) as i feel that that squad could win the tournament in auto pilot(which is pretty much what they did under Grant)

PS; How come he is now at Chelsea and still spouting on about OTHER teams!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Avia, I have to agree with Pera on your posts pure fan!!

As for Chelsea, Carletto will come up huge during the African Nations Cup and then we will earn his true stripes for many Chelsea fans, mine are already sold.

As for subs, I will defend him and say that his options were EXTREMELY limited…considering his starting eleven, his only real attacking option was Ronaldinho and he wasnt even an option, I do agree at times he befuddled, but his options were not always top notch.

Lastly, Cappello is my Cappello!! Love that guy…

i know gianfranco but with c.ronaldo i dont even waste my time thinking about him as hes just a cheating little bitch.

as much as i despise commercialism i can understand why people do adverts etc as there is a lot of money involved but when people become brands, then i have a real problem respecting them.
i like my players like baresi, maldini, scholes and giggs men who play their football and then thats it

Becks biggest “mistake” was to take this girl as a wife. From that point on his life changed dramatically, outside of the pitch. And as GF and few others mentioned earlier, few players of the same age bracket are willing to work as hard.
As for his Galaxy stint… I mean Sheva blew it up in Chelsea, Dinho can’t do shit in Milan and even youngster like Benzema is on the wrong end of the rotation at Real Madrid. Shouldn’t have listened to his wife – hello Sheva.

    1) Alex, thank you for your background, it all comes clear now. Here’s another way to look at exploitation. Football clubs/federations/sponsors are all in each others’ pockets when it comes to promoting players in various markets. Ferguson is well aware of the deals his players make — as well as what percentage ManU gets and what new “markets” they will help the team break into (just as the case with any other team) — you live in England, have you seen how many ads Giggs has been? No complaints from me, if I have to see advertising at all I enjoy watching the ones featuring football. As for Beckham “putting himself about” England — England well used his sparkly image to polish their own around the world after having their fans banned from international matches. Beckham did what he was asked for the England team, yes it increased his visibility but I venture to say that it did more to promote the England NT.

    2) Jovan, I would never blame a person’s choices on their spouse/partner. Beckham was free and over 21 when he fell in love. Far from hoping his wife would drop her career and settle down and keep house, he’s always been clear that part of the attraction was how she went about her work — the nature of which would have been hard to miss. People love who they love, its not our business.

    3) Gianfranco! Please, don’t get too far into the cause of problems when it comes down to footballers and women. Let’s just say that we would not enjoy the light in which we see many of our heros — and the tarnish of their commercial pursuits would seem tame. Best, all around, to just see how these guys are doing on the pitch and leave it at that! ;-)

    Anti-capitalists? I thought the 60s were over?

Jovan, Antonio, chill. I don’t mind seeing Milan wallow around in mediocrity, but Gallani makes less sense than Secco. All things considered, who’s transfers would you take over the last 3-4 years? Even Secco’s disaster years were not worse than Gallani’s.

Absolutely, Milan’s transfer politics haven’t made sense ever since we sold Sheva, apart from the two shiny moments of buying kaka and pato which were, oh the irony, mostly leonardo’s doing.

puzzled as to how clubs like Inter and Juventus and even West Ham for Fucks sake are chasing players like Candreva of Livorno and we are still wallowing away with the likes of Ederson!? Diamanti went to West Ham for pennies…these are players that should at least be on the Milan radar if you want to do things young and on the cheap…

Hey GF, bit of a weird post. It comes across as damning him with faint praise.

You call him a one-trick pony I agree, although his crossing is now a distant memory.

You say he was a flop in the MLS, I agree.

You say he doesn’t respect the Galaxy or the MLS, I agree.

the only thing I’d disagree with is your statement that he “digs out tackles, get dirty, and work” – which i think even the blindest Engerlaaand fan will concede is something Beckham could never be accused of. Honestly find me a video clip of Beckham ever making a tackle??

I think your post agrees mostly with George Best when he said, “He (Beckham) cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn’t score many goals. Apart from that he’s all right.”

You know guys, Posh made Becks into a brand he is today. From the pitch to the runway, she had a huge hand in his global image as one of the most recognized footballers in the world. When he came over to the Galaxy even my wife and her friends were talking about it. And she couldn’t tell a football from a baseball. if he dissed the Galaxy is because of the crap team they put on the pitch. Besides Landycakes, there is nobody else, Gian is right on that one. I think the owners took full advantage of the situation and made as much money as they could and in return they put shit players on the pitch. He makes about 6mil a year in L.A. but sells probably 10mil dollars in shirts alone. I think he got a bad rap.
In Milan, he’s been a revelation, nobody thought he’d fit in as well as he did. Including Fester, since Adriano was most likely glaring at the marketing potential rather than Beck’s footballing skills. His determination, hard work and passion has been refreshing. He’s got great positioning instincts, great crossing skills and excellent defensive skills. I think he’s been a bonus for us and not a drag. And all this from someone who thought Becks would be a bust in Milan.
