Tuesday Milan Musings
By: Gianfranco | February 12th, 2008Tomorrow Milan will take on Livorno and eliminating the last game in hand that Milan has over the rest of the table. That means that with a win they will climb to 39 points and in firm hold of fourth place and ticket for the Champions League. I am not trying to get a ahead of myself here but a few months ago the Rossoneri were toiling down the bottom of the table with very little chance of anything after losses to Empoli and Atalanta. So you can see why there is a bit of excitement.
Three points are not a given tomorrow and the solid run of play from the Rossoneri will have to continue. Remember the mark of a good team is one that can win in adversity, or when they play poorly and Sunday against Siena was a good example of that. Francesco Tavano has been a sniper in front of the net lately and the defense will have to keep him quite. That will not be a simple task because Nesta is having back problems and Maldini is going to be rested so that he can ready for Saturday? Don’t know what Carletto is thinking here if Il Capitano is going to rest he should rest until next Tuesday.
The strikers are also working their way back slowly but surely. Ronaldo is fit, but not match fit, which is a polite way to say he is out of shape. Pippo did not look like his old offside, goal poaching self this weekend and he may be in the same boat as Ronaldo. This opens the door for a Gila/Paloschi tandem with the potential for a Gourcuff tre- quartista.
Here is my projected lineup:
Kalac- Dida is done in my eyes, and I can careless. Thanks for the good times pal.
Oddo- plays tomorrow, rests Saturday, plays Arsenal (we have to think here Carletto)
Bonera- OH BOY
Kaladze – Nesta’s running mate is a solid option all the time, and is always better with time on the pitch.
Janks- see Oddo.
Rino- he has miraculously recoverd, as we all knew he would. He needs pitch time before Arsenal. Should be subbed soonest by Brocchi
Pirlo- see Oddo
Ambro- see Oddo
Gourcuff- with Kaka out let the kid run behind the strikers and see what he is worth.
Gila- he needs work, and is healthy a no brainer.
Paloschi- he also should play, start strong up front, but he must play much more consistent and prove that he is a not a flash in the pan but a talented future striker.
Other midweek odds and ends:
-Big Ron may hang up the boots; it appears his battle with injuries is really taking its toll on a guy who was at the top of the footballing only a few years ago. I have never been a big fan because of his time at Inter, but I have to say I respected him and for the good of the game really wanted to see the man he used to be. I really don’t know what is next for Big Ron, but I can leave it up to you to speculate.
-Matteo Ferrari, the bench riding Roman defender may be on his way to Milan in the offseason. Fine by me, the defense can use all the help it can get and the more choices the better off the squad will be, especially if Champions League is on the calendar. Zambro or even Barzagli/Zaccardo are better choices if available.
See you all tomorrow, post game…

Jeez couldn’t Amelia have let that one go! Hopefully he’ll be doing that for us next year. I thought Gourcuff played alright-nice cross to Pippo. But same old story-back line a little slow and creaky, nothing on the break, and not enough imagination up front to break through Livorno having everyone behind the ball. I still believe things will open up against Arsenal and we will punish them.

pippo was slightly offside…
ugh that was completely disappointing… gourcuff, beside that ball to pippo was pretty useless… ronaldo was a waste of 2 subs… gila was a freaking flag pole and just about as mobile as one as well…. i really enjoyed the movement paloschi had and i think if he was left on along with pippo, we could have won that game…

I totally agree with you k about Paloschi-seeing him out there only reinforces how utterly useless Gila was/is. Even Ambro moved more than Gilardino up front, granted he was called for a penalty every time he moved but still.

I have the same deflated feeling that i had after the Atalanta match. Lots of movement but just didnt kill off Livorno by wasting chances. Oddo, Paloschi = good
Gourcuff = bad.God Pete, i hope your right, or maybe you saw something tonight that i didnt but having watched Arsenal rampage their way to the top of the EPL AND stay there it will take a far better performance than tonights if we are to stay in the CL never mind win it.
I watched the Real Madrid match at the weekend and watched them crush Valladolid 7-0 . The result was not one sided soley because Valladolid were that bad (equal to Livorno if you ask me) but becuase Madrid pounced on and buried EVERY half chance and attempt at goal via a killer instinct. They also passed the ball around alot better and kept possesion of it in a manner that was alien to the way Milan played tonight.
But it shouldnt be!

Common you were playing Livorno, not Frosinone
Amelia kept us in the game and Diamanti almost scored the winner at the end. From my perspective it was an entertaining match
Livorno played to the best their limited abilities permited. Grande Camolese !
Ciao Guys !

Hey, totally agree about how well Livorno played. Hats off to them. But with the squad Milan have they should surely have walked away with max points.
Im not gona entertain the excuse of Livorno putting all their men behind the ball because thats what Valladolid did and Madrid still had the skill to break them down.
“Livorno played to the best their limited abilities permited” agree with that but i cant say the same about Milan tonight. We should have done much better.

Christ, I just got home from school now. Well, aside from the crappiness that the match seemed to be playing-wise, how much does that suck for Ronnie? I legit feel absolutely terrible for him. His career is effectively over according to Channel 4. He was a complete beast in his prime, really is a shame, he was completely hampered by injuries, and now this…I sincerely hope for a rapid recovery (or as fast as can be expected considering the severity). Say what you will, he helped save our butts second half of last season.
In any case, I’m glad I didn’t watch this match. I can’t say anything since I didn’t watch it, but the double striker substition sounded rather idiotic from Carletto. Whatever, we got a point, we’re a point behind Fiorentina. Should we be winning matches like these? Yes. Do I still think we’re going to qualify for the CL even though we have a long way to go? Yes. It’s gonna be a ridiculously tight battle though.

Really dont thank me, feel like im only relaying crap news, would have prefered to saw how rock solid & compotent our defense was, how our first two strikers ripped apart Livorno’s defense only for it to be terrorised once R99 and Super Pips came one and how worried Wenger must be on the trip back to London after having scouted out our boys!
Unfortunately, erm, i think Mr. Wenger must have his trademark sly grin on his face right about now, coz if tonights performance is anything to go by we are genuinely gona struggle agasinst the Gunners (amd i was optomistic a month back!)
Hana- im still confused by Carleetos substitions, yeah take off Gila and put on Pippo, wtf he did 2nite can be added to the list of baffling subs he had made this season and it cost us 2nite!
