Thursday Milan Musings

By: Gianfranco | January 10th, 2008

I began researching my next post which was supposed to discuss why Milan spent the money on Pato when they had alternatives. While researching I found this, and said to myself why reinvent the wheel when all of my feelings are right here. Thanks to Channel 4, Richard Gooden, and Calcio Italia for this great piece, and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

Last summer Milan spent in excess of £15m to bring Alexandre Pato to San Siro. The kid nicknamed ‘The Duck’ might go on to be one of the world’s best players – just as Carlo Ancelotti and Silvio Berlusconi are predicting – yet it’s unlikely that he will save the Rossoneri’s Serie A season.

But why didn’t they sign Giuseppe Rossi when he was made available by Manchester United for just £7m, although admittedly with a buy-back clause inserted by the Red Devils? They spent a similar amount on Brazilian midfielder Emerson, who I consider to be a poor excuse for a footballer, so why couldn’t they have brought in someone who would actually aid their team?

Instead, the former Parma ace is currently lighting up El Madrigal and has found the back of the net on seven occasions in the Spanish Primera Liga – not bad going for a kid who is not what you would describe as an out-and-out striker. In fact, his deep-lying role would perfectly complement the poaching game of Pippo Inzaghi or Alberto Gilardino, both of whom have struggled in Serie A this term.

But it’s not just Milan who should’ve taken a punt on the American-born hitman. Roma have also looked lacking in the striking department in the absence of Francesco Totti, with Mirko Vucinic seemingly incapable of recreating his Champions League form in League action. Would £7m spent on Rossi really have hit the Giallorossi’s bank balance that hard?

Back in the August issue of Calcio Italia, we took a look at the most promising youngsters in Italian football, Of the eight experts polled, seven picked Rossi in their top three, making him a comfortable winner ahead of the highly-rated Alberto Aquilani and Giampaolo Pazzini. The likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Pierluigi Casiraghi have also talked up his ability, but for some reason the big boys were still reluctant to move for him. Perhaps it is karma’s way of punishing him for walking out on Parma’s youth squad, because I certainly can’t think of any other reason why he isn’t lighting up Serie A on a weekly basis.

Actually I like the way the midfield is shaping up, Gourcuff, Kaka, with Pirlo and Rino. I junt hope we replace the whole defence.

ugh i know… all summer, all i wanted wat rossi… the fact that he is a milan fan only made me want him to come here more… and what a steal it would have been… 7 million pounds is chump change…

3 years from now berlusconi will be bragging about the deal like he does about kaka, and how he got him for peanuts… damn.

if pato is half the player carlo and silvio are hyping up to be, then i will have no regrets about buying him over rossi in the summer. we have to invest for the future as well, and it would have been a shame had he moved on to play in the premiership instead. however, there was no reason why we couldn’t have signed both players, although i have to admit that the buy-back clause was a major drawback to the deal.

anyway, we missed out on a very good player, but we have more cause for regret over missing out on luca toni, who would have helped us out a lot more in the short term. or franck ribery. or buffon.

Pato was a great buy. It does you no good to buy Rossi when Man U insists on a buy back clause. I dont think any player is a savior on this team for this year, but they will still finish 4th which is the goal. The fact they can afford to bring in the best talent in the world allows to be Champions League contnders every year. Pato is especially important as the club is clearly aging and needs young reinforcements.

Jeremy, got to agree with you on the buy back clause issue. As ive mentioned before, the fact that we may lose a number of the seniors after the summer Milan need new & young blood (ala Gourcuff). Gona hold back on labelling Pato (good or bad) for the time being though as none of us have seen what he can do for the team but if he helps us snag a Champions League place he will have my praises.

If im honest, ive been uncomfortable with our striker situation ever since we offloaded Sheva and this has still not been resolved in my eyes (again, this may happen at the weekend against Napoli depending on Patos’ performance). So may be we can live without Rossi?

Roy is spot on with regards to our current midfield, i feel it keeps the tradition of a strong midfield similar to the Gullit & Rijkaard or even the Boban & Albertini days, defence wise i would still want to keep Nesta tho and Kaladze did prove his worth last season against Man Utd.

I’m just kind of nervous/excited about the match on Sunday, talking of which does anyone know if it will be shown on tvants or espn as its not on the scheduled match in the uk??
