Monday Milan Musings

By: Gianfranco | September 8th, 2008

A ton of stuff has been flying around during this international break and seeing that I was rather disenfranchised with Italy’s performance I need some time to get my mind back on the game.

Azzurri

Let us start with Marcello Lippi’s Italy shall we. Just a few months back former Milan man Roberto Donadoni was relieved of his duties in favor of World Cup winner Marcello Lippi. I have to admit I wasn’t all that pleased with the move and would have rather someone else been given the job, but with the promise of moving this team forward towards 2010 I was on board.

The problem is as Julian has discussed here at the Italy blog, Lippi has not exactly moved this team forward into the new era, but instead turned back the clock closer to 2006 than 2008. I understand the idea of win now, but there is not excuse to not include some new faces into the squad to have them primed and ready for 2010. Now this brings us to Milan, and their troop of Azzuri players: Zambro, Ambro, Rino, and Pirlo. These players, save Ambro, were integral parts of the squad when they hoisted the WC, however it is time to move forward from these players as well as many others to lead the Azzurri into the future. It pains me to say it, as Milan has always done well with Juventus to stabilize and create the foundation of the National team, but with Milan choosing to assist Dunga instead of Lippi, our hope now rests with Darmian, Borriello, and Antonini. Two years is a long time, and these boy should have a chance by then.

Flamini

Anyone think he kind of looks like Fetyani?
A few months ago I was discussing the versatility and value of our new man in the midfield Flamini. Carletto was quick to use the Frenchman’s ability to play mid and defense against Bologna however Flamini was quick to say that he prefers to not be switched around. I was happy with Flamini in the mid, but with the clubs current injury crisis he needs to be a team a players and do what is asked of him, no bitching. He had a great game in the mid, but if the coach asks you to play RB for the last 25 minutes to give the team a chance to win, and that is why you do it plain and simple. Hopefully he understands this sooner than later.

Nesta

Nesta was left of the roster for the UEFA Cup group stages. This means he can not be included on the roster until the knockout phases. This does not really pose that much of an issue to me, but if he in fact will be unavailable for the remainder of 2008 and the club knew this all along, why did they not push the issue for more defensive help? I just can’t really understand it, but don’t be put anything past the management at this point and time.

As for Nesta, I hope he can back, but I read some articles stating that he could barely walk due to stiffness and this pain could cause a premature end to his career. It is quite a shame that something like this would cause the end of such a solid career. Let’s just hope he comes back.

Carletto

It is funny to read that Carletto is already on the hot seat, but he won’t get canned first because Palermo’s boss beat him to it. Quite honestly I can’t even see Carletto getting canned this season either, but I certainly don’t envy the task he has in front of him. Fielding this many attacking players is quite a task and leaves the squad open to the counter. It is going to be a delicate balance that needs to be established and I hope that with the addition of Borriello and the solid play of Ambro, Flamini, or Gattuso that Carletto can galvanize the space behind Pirlo and in front of the defense. Can’t wait until Sunday to see what is rolled out.

Pato

Former Milan man Leonardo has said that Pato’s work ethic is not where it should be. This isn’t the first time the duck has been called out with Dunga questioning his habits as well. I find this humorous because he is squad mates with Kaka who supposedly has an insane work ethic and Dinho who has not been praised for his practices. He can choose his path; I just hope he chooses the right one.

I get frustrated because I see guys like Cesc Fabergas, just an example for moment, complaining about being taking off and then saying that he will work harder so it doesn’t happen again; I just want to see this passion again. Not just at Milan but in the whole of Italy. I want to talk more about this topic, but not now, I just feel that since Italy won the WC the passion in this country is gone. Any thoughts?

On a side note, this weekend the U14 boys soccer team I coach won the Nutmeg Tournament here in CT which is very prestigious tournament in the northeast of the State. As I a promise to the boys I told them I would post their picture on the blog, but the file is to big, so I will shout them out anyway. CONGRATS GUYS.

Rino news from Channel 4 that I forgot to mention earlier:

Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has undergone surgery for his fractured hand and is expected to recover relatively quickly.

Gattuso was injured in the most bizarre of circumstances as he fell into the dug-out during a friendly at the Gradisca d’Isonzo training ground.

The pugnacious Rossonero sustained multiple fractures to his left hand and wrist and was ruled out of Italy’s World Cup 2010 qualifier against Georgia on Wednesday.

But the initial operation to heal the problem has gone according to plan and the estimated recovery time is encouraging.

“Rino is doing well and if we are lucky he should be back on the pitch in a month,” Azzurri doctor Enrico Castellacci explained.

“The procedure went well and there are worse things that can happen to you,” Gattuso agreed.

The news will come as something of a relief to Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti, who must have feared an extended absence for one of his key men.

gian - very disappointed with some of the comments on the italy page - they are downright mean, spiteful and some quite racist as well…its weird how some fans can
become so blind that they lose all objectivity when it comes to a rational discussion…
anyway, forza milan! and cheers to the milan offside for always maintaining decorum regardless of how often we dont agree with each other or the coach or the manager or the players!

    for those who doubted:

Kaka gives injury lowdown Tuesday 9 September, 2008

    ——————————————————————————–

Milan ace Kaka plays down the latest transfer rumours linking him with Manchester City and gives an update on his injury problems.

The FIFA World Player of the Year missed the start of the season, as his knee still hasn’t fully healed after a summer operation.

There have been suggestions that the injury may be a persistent thorn in Kaka’s side and the complaint blighted his 2007-08 campaign.

“I know there is lots of concern over my injury but this story has been running for over a year,” Kaka told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“There has always been something that stopped me from listening to my body in recent times.

“For example, the knee would be painful but we had a European Super Cup to win, and then I wanted the Ballon d’Or and then the games in Yokohama. It kept going like that until I had to stop.”

Over the last 12 months, Kaka has been the constant subject of transfer speculation and the latest side to enter the frame are Manchester City.

“First it was Real Madrid and now it is fashionable to talk about England,” Kaka said.

“The market goes like that - Milan make offers to other clubs and they make offers to Milan.

“But I would never ask to leave. I have always been treated well by the directors and the relationship is excellent.

“One day people may have a different attitude towards me, but that doesn’t seem possible to me.

“I would only leave if the Rossoneri decided to sell me, or the day that we don’t have the same objectives and I don’t see that happening.

“Milan did well in the market and still want to win and be competitive and those are also my targets.”

Kaka concluded by refuting suggestions that Milan have an imbalanced squad with too much emphasis on the attack.

“You can play with five attackers,” he insisted.

“The important thing is that the team doesn’t divide into two halves where the defenders moan that the strikers don’t help them and the strikers moan that there isn’t enough going forward, but that won’t happen here.”

Sam I have heard conflicting things about Senderos as well, but what I hear and I like to hear is that the raw talent is all there. Good tackler, good speed, and great marking. Now add some quality decision making and we may be in great shape with his addition.

It is heartbreaking to even think about Nesta ending his career when he could easily play for at least 2 more years. If I’m not mistaken, this is not a new injury, I remember him complaining about back problems last season, so why it wasn’t dealt with earlier? And if Milan knew the extent of the injury or the possibility of risking him sidelined for a long period, why didn’t we purchase another solid defender? And if they didn’t know, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE MEDICAL STAFF?

Sam, sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience over at the Azzurri blog, it has turned into more of a club blog where each group glorifies their own without any objectivity.

I’ve checked out the forums. They’re a neat idea and all, but I personally like the discussion format we have going on here. It’s different and I feel like that’s what sets the Offside apart from every other footy forum.

Good post as always Gian, and major congrats to you and your U-14 team! Always a stellar feeling, winning a tourney. Have you tried using photobucket, perhaps, for the picture?

I don’t know why I didn’t make the connection beforehand until Avia mentioned “super healing abilities”. Ladies and Gentlemen, Rino Gattuso is Wolverine.

I hope Kaka’s knee doesn’t get any worse, and I hope Rino will return asap. Hopefully we can say the game against Bologna was a fluke, and we can pick it up from here on out…

The Don has bowed out of the Hammers job despite being a favorite, leaving Zola the number one candidate with Bilic still waiting to be interviewed. The Don cited that he didnt like the system of player development and acquistion at West Ham and was gracious for his interview. It would have been very interesting to see him in the EPL…
