Friday Milan Musings, the Saga Continues
By: Gianfranco | April 18th, 2008There was a time when a more successful Milan team comfortably in the top two or three of Serie A would roll over for a relegation zone team like Reggina. The problem is that this Milan is not comfortably atop the table, in fact they are not comfortably anywhere, and need the points as much as Reggina do. There are only three teams I would hate to face in any league, and those are the bottom three within striking distance of staving off relegation. Milan has a good past record against Reggina, and thanks to a Gila goal earlier in the season Milan have not lost to Reggina in two years.
But as we all know this season is completely different, and absolutely nothing has gone as planned. It doesn’t matter what choices Carletto makes, or who he puts on the pitch the only thing that matters know is the end result, and that end result is three points for the Rossoneri. With that out of the way I am not going to sit here and say the squad is in tip top shape. Players are tired and lingering injuries are making this much more difficult than they need to be. So if Carletto goes with Cafu, Simic, or even Digao the chosen eleven will have to put every foot right to get a win, plain and simple.
As it stands now with the Bonera injury it looks like the defense will feature Cafu, Nesta, Kaladze, and Maldini. If Maldini can’t go it will be up to Simic to step in. The reason for Maldini’s potential inability is a supposed injury that he suffered today in practice. The official Milan website listed the injury as a lesion on his hip, which could be a cut of gash, and does not mention any muscular injuries. It is hard to tell without any more information so instead of speculating it is best to wait for the results from the tests.
On a side note, the past two seasons have seen the Milan squad suffer from countless muscle injuries and knee problems. A few years back the New York Yankees suffered from a rash of hamstring/quad injuries at the start of the season and the Yankees were quick to fire the physio staff for a new group of trainers. Is it time for Milan to do the same thing. As we all know training, stretching, and strengthening are important in our day to day lives and we are not athletes, we may try to be, but we are not. So imagine how important it is to a guy like Il Capitano to be extremely well taken care, this is my team and I only want the best of the best for them, why doesn’t Silvio?
Carletto is fortunate to have Pippo in his goal poaching form, but as we saw last week Pippo is still not fir for a full ninety so depending on the formation Carletto will need Pato, Paloschi, and even Gila at his disposal. It may even be smart to employ two strikers from the get go in and effort to dictate the game and put some goals on the board early and often. With Ambro out this could be a great game for Gourcuff to play a full ninety and be surrounded by talent, even if it is just a showcase for his transfer.
MUSINGS…
I don’t have much today in terms of musings and I am a bit tired of transfer talk so I will give us all a break on that for a few days, and let you take the lead on those discussions, but I do want to talk about Rino.
If Rino is transferred it will go down as the single dumbest move in Milan’s history and will require me to make a serious consideration in terms of this team’s direction and goals. We all know that Maldini is truly a once in a lifetime player and his desire to stay Rossoneri his whole career is awesome. Rino and to a lesser extent some other players on the squad have stated that this is where they belong and where they want to stay. I believe that if a player is fundamental to the make of the team and is still producing at a reasonably high level they should remain at the squad even if it means a lesser role ala Pippo. With this thought in mind, we look at Rino, who is more than a role player, and is in fact an engine and power source in big important games.
Another reason why Rino is so valuable is that despite his form, his passion allows for him to play at a higher level when maybe his body can not. I also believe him when he says that when he can no longer perform he will leave the game on his terms, and that is so respectable especially when some players play beyond their skill level. If Rino wants to leave that is his decision, but by no means should the man who reminds us of the Diavolo himself should be shopped or contemplated sold. I would love Milan nonetheless, but the resentment I would carry if Rino was sold in favor of a Brazilian or other foreigner would be an unforgivable offense. The day will come where he will lose his place, all good players do, but until that day the spot is his, and so should the armband when Paolo finally decides to give it up.

i think we are too quick to forget what this same team accomplished less than a half a year ago. they were the best club team in the whole world. to start pawning a core player like a rino so soon is just crazy. and even if he wants to go under his own will, then that shows he does not have faith in the direction that their management (berlu, gallani) is demonstrating they will go in. thats my take at least.
kaka probably said it best
“Concerning what’s being said about Gattuso possibly leaving, I think Rino won’t leave Milan because he is a symbol of this team, a lot of things can happen of course, but I believe there is no Milan without the Champions League and there is no Milan without Gattuso.”Posted from

i dont understand why they’re trying to sell him really. but if they do i don’t care if they replace him with an italian or not. i understand wanting italians in the squad but instead of being a little xenophobic about one player being replaced by another why not just bring in the talent that you can in the transfer market and work on bringing world class italians through the youth ranks. the answer for the position if gattuso does leave is de rossi (who roma should never sell and if you want an italian) or essien if you dont need to have an italian who can do alot of the same things.
i’m kind of afraid that milan isn’t worried enough about the age of their squad with the rumors that have been flying. ronaldinho and sheva are typical answers for the sort of team who just buys without regard for the long haul. its a bummer.

now we’re linked with Torres. now that would probably be the perfect striker to sign. Torres & Luca Toni are definitely the best strikers this season in europe. plus he is young and very very talented, i believe he has more than 20 goals or so this season so far. although he’ll cost around the 40 million range. he’s being sold due to financial problems and stuff.
i really dont get the Van Nistelrooy deal. Spanish reports are saying that Milan will also swap Pirlo………….looooooool. Dinho News, Milan & Barca are scheduled to meet today. its being reported that the deal hasnt been done yet due to Barca’s position in the CL. as soon as they get knocked out the deal will be officially announced, or if they dont, then it will be announced at the end of the season after the CL final.

i think everybody is exaggerating the gattuso talk, hes going nowhere, we shouldnt be concerning ourselves with such futile banter.
gattuso will definitely not leave anytime soon, so we really dont have to worry about.
lets hope all these transfer ‘rumors’ come to good conclusions, we really need some more players.
lets hope most of the deals are done soon so the players can rest easy knowing the club is going to be serious next year..

Well, according to Calciomercato, it is not about the money, Gattuso is just tired:
“After nine years in AC Milan the midfielder feels exhausted. It’s a question of motivation, not money.
Real is after him and Toni calls him.
Maldini intervenes straight away: ‘Rino knows that Milan does not want to let him go. It’s up to Galliani now to try and change his mind.’ (Tuttosport) ”

I’ve got two points to make, as usual:
1) I have an extreme sense of nationalism when it comes to my football clubs. I do NOT want to see us become like that nerazzuri merda from across town. We need a good Italian core. At the same time, we also need some foreign players as well. It’s a delicate balance that right now I think we have down rather well.2)I know I said before if we purchased ‘Dinho I’d leave until he’s gone, but if Rino leaves I’m gone for good.
He is a major part of what drew me to AC Milan in the first place. He is my hero and my idol. He has no equal in what he does, and wherever he goes, I will go. I will always bleed red and black blood, but I will never feel the same if Gattuso leaves prematurely. This season just gets worse and worse. Of course, I’ll always be around now and then poking my head in and giving my opinions. See you tomorrow, gameday, tifosi…Forza Milan, Sempre Sono Rossonero.

And yes, Man. Utd. I like them, I like their players for the most part as well. Except for Ronaldo and Nani, both are skilled, but showboat far too often. And Gianfranco, the writer at the ManU offside does not give me nearly enough to work with as you do, so don’t worry about seeing me defect to their page!

I’m optimistic that Milan will do well in the next 5 games, but also pessimistic that Fiorentina will not drop points. They’re a very strong team.
UEFA, here we come!

Let’s pray that Fiorentina draws two games in the next five.

As to recruitment I think we need:
#1 quality, young and accomplished marksman (not yet purchased)
#1 one attacking midfielder, ( Dinho)
#1 one accomplished and in form defensive midfielder (not yet purchased)
#3 defenders, (Zambrotta, Ceasar-good flexible backup and a quality center back)These additions to the core of Pato, Kaka, Paloschi, Seedorf, Pirlo, Gattuso, Ambro, Nesta, Oddo, Kaladze, Gourcuff, Bonera, Brocchi and Maldini if he wants to stay, should be fit to challenge for every title on offer next season.

Crap, I forgot we need a ‘keeper too.

Yes, I know, very expensive looking squad. It’s still to be seen how much Galliani is willing to fork out on transfers and salaries next season.

we should be buying players , not selling . i know our rino won’t leave. i just cant imagine him playing for someone else. for the centerback role zapata will be ideal. there are plenty of good keepers around. we should make a move for one (possibly amelia). i have no problems with any decent striker except for that drogba

A Milan supporter bleeds red and black. No player is higher than the club and that includes Gattuso. IF he leaves, fine. Go. For whatever reason. Milan stays in me.
But Gattuso will never leave. His light may be dim at the moment but his heart is with Milan. And he will be in Milan. Once Maldini leaves, there will only be Gattuso and Ambrosini left as Milan’s symbols. I don’t think any of them wants to abandon that prestige to join other teams.
Milan should start winning, so their light will blaze with fury! FORZA MILAN!

i completely agree with you Langkau Fiction, i doubt Ringhio will leave anyways. but still, never and will ever a player be put above the club. and even Maldini always says that and emphasizes through out the years that he isnt the greatest in the team, that he does his job well because he is surrounded by great people, his humbleness is also what makes him great, of course among many other things. and off note, Kaka has a really really long way to win the heart of Milan fans as their new symbol, by long i mean like at least 5-7 years, thats if. you do not become a symbol, you are chosen by the heart of the fans. no goals or awards will make you what you are, the fans will.

Well said Languka Fiction!
Even tho’ it would almost kill us, watching Rino leave would not be the end of Milan.
And just to play devil’s advocate a second, if Rino’s heart isnt in it anymore SHOULD we be beggin him to stay when guys like Flamini are floating around waiting to be snapped up?!
I’m sure most of have noticed Rino’s sub-par performances this season, maybe he has already made his mind up hmm?

Avia, it’s not just Rino’s sub-par performance this season, it’s the whole team.
But in reality, I have a feeling that you’re all right, he probably isn’t going anywhere for a while *knock on wood*Now time to get a quick pre-game breakfast in…
