Welcome to the “Gooch”
By: Gianfranco | July 7th, 2009I am stuck in two minds here. When I heard that “Gooch”was joining AC Milan I was shocked and surprisingly pleased. It was my critical football eye that spoiled my party, but even my misgivings pale in comparison to the upside of this move. Yes Onyewu can clear the ball better, he constantly gives up throw in’s and corners, but when your mids aren’t helping back a CB has few options. Yes he is a bit green, and lacks real big game competition outside of the USMNT Jersey, but then again so is our Brazilian Silva, who in actuality has far less, and everyone seems keen on him!?
The best part of this deal for the club is the price, but outside of the bargain bin shopping, free transfer, and a cheap three year deal, this player may actually be able to contribute. With many factors making Onyewu far more capable than anyone wants to give him credit for, on a team where a guy like Digao was sucking up a place Onyewu adds depth to a position that contains only three actual players, and not converted outside backs. Silva, Nesta, and Kaladze will welcome a new mate, especially with the final two suffering through injuries and Kaladze even considering calling quits if his knee cannot support training and play. Playing Favalli and Bonera (who I actually prefer at CB to RB) out of position may no longer be a necessity and with Favalli being the only true LB on the team outside of Janks, he can add depth where it is needed more so than in the middle.
The purchase of Onyewu also comes at a great time in his career, at 27 years old he is prime to come into his own and be a stellar CB. Stop for a moment and consider the best at that position Ferdinand, Terry, Puyol, Nesta and even Canna truly blossomed nearer to 30, and with the right training and playing time Onyewu may also come into his own. Please note I do not expect to him become a World Class, CB, it would be great for Club and Country, but even a serviceable and strong CB would be more than many of us can ask for.
The last and sweetest part of this deal for me is the good old fashioned risk vs. reward factor. The man succeeds and Milan and Co. are geniuses! He fails and moves on and no one even remembers this discussion, factor in the cost and this move is a masterstroke. So while many of cite the comical “marketability” them which I will discuss momentarily, the basis of this move is far more simplistic than many of us though, frankly it just plain makes sense. As for the marketability of this move, I don’t think there really is any. Selling jerseys in the US for Onyewu is a lost cause, very few people follow the USMNT, and even if they do many of those people couldn’t tell you his previous club anyway. It is a sad state affairs but with important things like the World Series of Poker and Woman’s Softball taking up valuable time on ESPN, there will be little for Gooch to get some if any publicity at all. Best of luck to him, and having an American CB in Serie A, something we have not seen since Alexi Lalas, should be an interesting draw for fans across Europe to see what this “Yank” can do.

agree with gf, shehan and alex. with the exception of juan who genuinely kept roma from 2nd half of table in the few games he managed last season, the brazilian back line is an absolute disaster – look no further than the confederations cup final.

i think most everyone (with a few notable exceptions) wanted a mix of old (meaning world class experienced) and young….the problem now is that we have old (as in aging hobbling old) and the very young….
cant see what the hypocrisy in decrying this strategy is….either we have the geriatric squad or the babes in arms or the free transfers…who is the one world class experienced player that we have in the squad today (pirlo aint been world class since 2 years ago, is heading into the geriatric section, gattuso and nesta are coming off long term injuries and i count pato as part of the babes since he still has to learn a lot to hone his talent) – how can a squad with no such talismanic player hope to compete in the serieA and in the CL????Posted from

Nothing hypocritical about it; the squad sucks and everyone knows it. You don’t just lose your two best players and think you’ll do better without any relevant additions. Now if we’d kept Kaka, brought back Gourcuff, gotten rid of the deadweight and then added youth players that would’ve been something. Instead we’re left with no creativity in the midfield, no proven scorer and a backline which rests on the shoulders of a broken Nesta.

And its 4 kgs to get Ronaldinho back to the shape he was in last year; we will need him to lose at least 10 if we are ever to see him at his best. Maybe we should send him to an MMA camp or something; he could lose all that extra weight in a week.

K, did you ever try go to vacation and not gain SOME weight? Thats why we call it vacation for crying out loud. Whats important its his commitment from the now on. 10lbs are gained really quickly, its a bitch to shed them, but “professionals” live in a perfect world in that sense, they can and have to do it.
Now there are rumors about yet another Brazilian, from Hoffenheim, no less… Carlos Eduardo. 12mil and he is ours. No mas Italians?Posted from

Just read an interesting article and thought i should share it with uall. I hope it eases some tension we milan fans have with our current transfer market. and for those who dont frequent it already, this site is good for Italian football news.

Why are we signing Rosina as an attacking or central midfielder. if they want to gameble on a young Italian player that can possible inject some tuffness, speed and skill on the team he the guy to get. He reminds me of a young Seedorf. He’s definately worth the risk!
He’s gonna want out of Serie B, we should get him for next to nothing.
Non moves like these that make me wonder WTF management is thinking.

Dawg… we are or we aren’t??? I guess we aren’t, and its a shame. He is a great player.

I am also perturbed by the lack of interest in Rosina, he is practically free!!!

well gian, they have to be literally free for us to get him. or even D’agostino, worth it. but yah we’d be lucky if we get 1 striker.
i know this sounds too berlusconi’ish. but i do think we have a strong squad, as long as we stay injury free to some extent.

come on fetyani… are you serious… seedorf was average lst yr, nohere close to his regular level of play. we may be able to win games, but by struggling and fighting, which in the long run will fatigue our team. WE NEED DEPTH. I hope we get it closer to the end of the transfer season. Rosina would be a great buy though. If he wants to come milan that is.

milan should be able to attract pretty much anyone. the prem league is pretty much gone tits up as we kept predicting all year, so players are whoring themselves out of there as quick as they can.
Milan have all the prerequisites, history, money, champions league place, no debt, guaranteed income/image rights are massive (look at david coathanger) so I kind of get the feeling that galliani is waiting for the overpriced dross like fabregas to soak up the massive money from the madrid/barcelona axis. next month he will have his pick of top players for half what theyre being valued at now.
fuck it sell pirlo, dump seedorf and a couple of hangers on. get pippo value players down to pippo value salaries and then hit the market for dzeko/carvalho/essien (ok maybe not essien but you know what i mean) for less than 50mill.

A few weeks back this is who goal.com said we should go after this transfer season to improve the team and have a good chance at the scudetto.
http://goal.com/en-us/news/86/italy/2009/06/17/1330511/goalcom-summer-shopping-who-didn‘t-milan-buy
Instead we get the Gooch????
@ Fetayani – R U serious about us having a strong enough team as is if everyone is healthy???
We are just as old, just as slow and less creative than a year ago. I’m a pretty optimistic guy by nature, but i’m also realistic. Anyways when the season starts if we just have added the Gooch and Fabiano…
WE WILL MISS CL NEXT YEAR!!!
I called it the year we missed and I see it happening again. U need to spend money to make money. 67+15= 0 money spent on signings.
Other clubs that didn’t sell any players for near the money that we sold Kaka for are kicking our asses in the transfer market.
I highly doubt that the selling clubs are setting one price for us and another lower price for other clubs. Yet these clubs are buying players that we should be….why?
Because they are waiting 4 the price to go down!!!!
I’m not surprised that other clubs aren’t playing nice with us. Management want to have their cake and eat it 2.Posted from

sure galliani is really smart and lets put our trust in him…all the best players are also in on the secret and waiting for us to come knocking just when the transfer window is closing…

how are we a strong team – we have lost kaka and maldini and gained gooch and silva in replacement? HOW does that make us a better team than the last 2 years – we kept seeing lackadaisical and lethargic performances then and asking for replacements but we are now worse off….

Ok a word on something else we need, a forward. So you guys prefer Fabiano over Nilmar. See all the videos I assembled there

for the record, ronaldinho’s apparently lost 2.5kg since the beginning of the week.
he still needs to step up and prove himself worthy of the maglia.
i am only upset/worried/concerned/frustrated with 3 people on the squad; pirlo, seedorf and dida. we should get rid of them, their recent form warrants them no place on the team.

we dont have any money, nothing. so all we can do is try our best next season and hope things fall our way and cash in. it takes time to collect money and to invest in a championship team, i believe we’ll be back on the top with the European elite in 2 seasons. we havent been there since 2003-2006. yes we won the cl in 07 but we werent a powerhouse team, we were just perfect for the cl.
i dont know, but i personally, believe our management are doing the best job they can and all i can do is hope we might get a bit more lucky this summer and sign someone who will preform and score 20 goals next season. if not, Borriello!
bottom line again: we dont have money!!
and please dont say, then let Berlu sell it. 1) he will not sell over 50%, end of story, PERIOD. 2) no one made any offer so far, unless someone here has an investor with couple of hundred of million in hand and wants to enter a bad market…we should just accept it. we dont have the money to buy, so we have to be smart and win on the field.

fet your eternal optimism always finds a way to renew mine. As it stands Borrielo, Pato, Dinho, Rino, Pirlo, Ambro, Flamini, Nesta, Silva, Zambrotta and Abbiati is a serviceable and potentially succesful team. Add in Pipp’s vintage class, and youngsters like Abate to roam the right flan, DiGennaro to the front line and suddenly we have injected Italian youth, and pace to a team that lacked both. With the uses of Janks, Seedorf, Favalli, and Antonini we even add depth…are we world class, by all means no, but are we all that bad, frankly I don’t think so…

I have to partially agree. We are a strong team in some aspects. Nesta and Boriello practically missed all of last season. If Nesta remains fit,he is almost like a new signing. A new striker may help with the goals. But we do need to sign a few players like fullbacks(Cissokho,De Silvestri),and maybe a CM. And I hope we can get Dida and Dorf out. Pirlo can stay, atleast for 1 more year, unless Chelsea pay over the top for him.

Oneywu should not be said in the same sentence of other names like Terry, Ferdinand,Cannavaro and especially Nesta who is in a league of his own.
The signing of this American is neither good news nor bad news. It is not bad news because he comes for free. But it is not good news either as it is largely unknown how he will fair in Italy. Based on what we know and have seen, I do not expect anything great to come from him. Only with rather unfounded optimism can one expect Oneywu to be a hit. That said, and like Gianfranco already alluded to, it will be better to have the Gooch at centre back then the likes of Favalli. This really does say something about the state of Milan affairs at the moment.
