Wednesday Milan Musings
By: Gianfranco | July 9th, 2008I want to apologize for being absent in posts the past few days. Work and real life soccer have been very busy, but the lack of any real concrete news has left me somewhat frustrated as to the developments of the transfer season. But there are some thoughts that have come from the past post’s comments and Milan news.
-Arsenal has decided to negotiate with Fester for Adebayor. This is promising because it means that the rumors can actually become a reality, and it also means that Gallianni is ready to play hardball will not stand for the EPL inflating prices of their players on the way out. Adebayor is worth about 20M to me, and should be valued around the same for Fester, but remember the idea of need, and Milan needs a striker.
Many of us here are divided on Adebayor or Dinho, and with Galliani claiming it is one or the other I am going to make one last push for the Adebayor camp. At 24 years old, and with his first full season under his belt at Arsenal as the starter, he scored 30 goals, and really seems like the type of guy to take on the burden of being a top class striker. The best is yet to come from Adebayor, and why not be the team that harnesses that, and after watching his press conference last week and hearing him state out of his own mouth that he wants to play at Milan, it leaves a bit more convinced, especially with the lack of CL play.
Dinho is OK, but for no more than 10M, and anything over 20M leaves Milan looking like suckers. This whole notion of class being permanent doesn’t resonate with me, class is something you strive and work for, and it is not something that can be turned on like a switch. Class is also something that you have to hunger for, because if not it will always elude. I will spare Dinho and not make any fat jokes here about hunger, but I do not think Milan can make the same mistake they made with Ronaldo all over again. Also, this guy is not like Kaka, he is like Rivaldo, Adriano, and Ronaldo who tasted success very early and became utterly cancerous to their clubs.
As a Milan fan it is easy to reminisce and remember the past and want to have things be like they were, but it is important to separate the Milan legacy from the history of players. The club needs to move forward and a 24 year old striker to play with an 18 year old striker and a 25 year old attacking mid makes far more sense than throwing another 27 year old CAM whose best days are behind him into the mix. It is very much OK to remember and appreciate Dinho for what he has done, but it is even more important to let go and realize that Milan is not the place for him to try and refind his glory, the likelihood of failure is to great to take that chance…
-I have been doing a lot of research on the Milan youth system, to see how the new youngster can fit into the current squad and be developed. Info on these guys is not as easy to come by as I had hoped but the youngsters that sticks out most for me is Antonini who can play LB or LM. This kind of versatility will be welcome and assure that there is youth in place to play the very important spot of LB, and help spell Janks or Zambro.
-The final point I want to bring up is in regards to Borriello, and the talk of him being the next Gila. Gila was a fantastic player prior to coming to Milan and his ability with Parma was truly spectacular. When Milan signed him I was ecstatic and couldn’t believe that such a young, smart player was coming to the San Siro. Between Carletto, the purchase of Ronaldo, and the lack of real confidence in his own skills Gila regressed into a shell of the great striker he was, and is now going to the Viola where he will almost certainly regain some semblance of form, even if he doesn’t achieve his Parma numbers all over again. What went wrong with Gila, can’t be done with Borriello, or else another very talented player will be wasted at the benefit of no one. Milan has a great potential to really rotate and keep the strikers fresh, and with the potential inclusion of Adebayor leaves Milan with an embarrassing wealth of striker options. It also leaves the possibility of striking combo to make the team more offensive, and opens up the door for Pato to become a tre quartista type player which is a role that I think he would excel in. His confidence on the ball and on the edges of the box is stellar for an young player and I can’t help to think how dangerous he would be next to Kaka and behind Borriello and Adebayor.
This season is perfect for Milan to grow a little, and as fans we have to accept potential growing pains, but there is no reason that Milan can’t challenge on all fronts that they playing in. They have depth in the attack and in the middle of the pitch and one has to think that with a healthy defense things look good to get back to the top of Serie A.

ok sushan, im gonna bring 3-4 points to note in response to your multiple posts.
1) essien – you are saying he is the be all and end all of chelsea fc? that team is so f’ing stacked, they have 3 players for each position, nevermind 2. and you are going to boldly claim that essien is teh reason why they are so competitive? wasn’t essien the one who was supposed to be marking c.ronaldo when he scored his goal vs. chelsea in the champions league? just a thought.
look, i know its not fair to pick that one particular incident; but please be reasonable, dont attribute chelsea’s glory to one man. a rising tide raises all ships. mourinho was more instrumental to that teams success than essien; do not exaggerate his capabilities. and im seriously speaking when i say that he hasnt passed a ball forward in 4 years now, and counting…
2.1 – i used to be at the red and black forums, i havent been there in years. ive never met so many plastic and pseudo-milan fans in my life. theres quite a good reason why the first line of this point is in past tense. most of the people there are nothing but idiots, and they scarcely represent 1% of milan fans, and not even a fraction of the posters have objective attitudes to football. its a monkey’s haven.
2.2 – ucl in 07 was a team effort, but even our little architect pirlo had his moments of brilliance. have u forgotten the cross leading upto seedorf’s goal vs. man.utd at the san siro. or the freekick involved in our first goal in the final vs. liverpool? dont tell me pirlo was invisible. kaka’ shined because of his goals, and he truly had a remarkable season. but don’t tell me pirlo wasnt involved. he was on the team of the season, that should be enough of a testament to his input that wonderful season.
3 – perhaps the only logical thing you are saying is that our formation is too pirlo-dependent. but u know what, a formation is dependent upon the players, not vice versa. you play to your players’ strengths, not to the formations. thats why contemporary football has shied away from the orthodox 4-4-2 at the turn of the century and now employs such a variety of different tactics. in pirlo, we have the quality of 3 midfielders. for a comparison, it takes 3 people on barcelona to do the work of 1 pirlo (xavi, iniesta, deco). theres a good piece of information for you.
can you think of one player who is equal to pirlo in terms of creativity and passing quality? the closest i can think of is xavi from barcelona, but his vision is nowhere near to that of pirlo’s. ballack, noway; lampard, fuck no, gerrard, monkeys balls no, um… lets see, im thinking of the top teams in england, chelsea, liverpuke, man.utd, arsenal. fabregas… hmmm, hes good, but his quality is more of pass and move and hes a very dynamic player, hard to compare him to pirlo. lets try spain, barca, real, none over there. in italy, inter, juve, roma, aquilani, no experience for him, pizarro, poor mans pirlo is his nickname, go figure.
and you brought up arsenal vs. milan of course. well, that was quite the midfield battle. arsenal employed a 4-5-1 in that game, with hleb playing right behind adebayor in the role of trequartista. but in all honesty, hleb barely had any impact on the game with the ball at his feet; he had one job, to man mark pirlo, and he did. at the san siro, we were missing seedorf, and seedorf is a vital cog to our midfield. players attack pirlo, seedorf runs into the space left open, pirlo passes it to seedorf, and the play continues. of course, this is just a very simple understanding of a general template, but it serves the purpose of this discussion. now seedorf was absent, and ambrosini was in his role.
ambrosini was shit that game. pirlo had nobody to pass to, because a pass involved 2 people. the passer, and the receiver. as long as the receiver is opening himself for a pass, the passer can eventually give him the ball. ambrosini wasnt moving. gattuso hardly plays that role.
in those games, wenger got his defensive tactics spot on, a 10/10 to him. but at the same time, lets not forget that arsenal won with a lucky goal which was scored against the run of play. we hardly deserved to give up that goal, we were controlling play when they scored. it was unlucky, but that is football.
and that concludes the message of everything im trying to say, this is football. you win some, you lose some. you win together as a team, you lose together as a team. kaka’ was not the reason we won the champions league, it was the whole team. kaka’ is not the reason we got uefa cup this season, its the whole team. and it applies to pirlo as well.
one thing people need to realize is that in football, you win some and you lose some. its all part of a cycle. the ball is round, it can roll in any direction. its the bitterness of defeat that makes victory so sweet.
do you remember when we beat liverpool just over a year ago? that was a joyous occasion for 2 reasons. 1, we won the ucl!! 2, we beat liverfuckingwankersscumpool!! we lost to them 2 years ago, the worst i have ever felt. a day that brought tears to my eyes. but 2 years later i felt vindicated. goddamnit, it was the most beautiful feeling.
this is football everybody. you dont win forever, you wont be in the champions league forever. just take it on the chin and just focus on your next game.
as Maldini himself says, ‘you are only as good as your last game’. live for the day, then focus on the next game.
c’est la vie.
this. is. football.

“can you think of one player who is equal to pirlo in terms of creativity and passing quality?”
I can and his name is Riquelme.

Yes of course no one player can ‘win’ games by himself, not even Maradona. But the player that comes closest to that sort of ability in this Milan team is without any doubt for me, Kaka.

“can you think of one player who is equal to pirlo in terms of creativity and passing quality?”
-”I can and his name is Riquelme.”
And oh yeah, before I forget: Guti. These three are on par with each other atop the playing making ranks.

Have the new kits been revealed yet?
I’m curious as to how they’ve changed… I really didn’t like last season’s that much, I think the ‘06-’07 jerseys were awesome.Posted from

are u questioning xavi’s vision, for me xavi is nowhere inferior to pirlo , did u watch the spain friendly when spain won 1-0 over italy -> who owned the midfield?? it was xavi .
You arent getting my point here shehan , you are giving a good description of pirlo’s qualities which i havent denied anywhere. he has fantastic vision and i have said earlier its because of his brilliance and finesse that fr me he is the most important player along with gigi in the azzurri line up . But IMO i dont see it being replicated when he wears the milan jersey. for me he has been average the past two seasons and behind kaka and seedorf in terms of performances . I would be very happy if he plays to his capable level because then we wont be 20 points behing inter we will be competing for the scudetto.

I haven’t read everyone’s arguments, but I wanna point out that Pirlo’s contributions are more difficult to notice than Seedorf’s/Kaka’s or any striker.. I can’t honestly say I watched Pirlo in every game, so I can’t really comment on his contributions.. But what is obvious is Kaka/Seedorf’s brilliance in the 06-07 season.. and this season, Kaka also did pretty well, Seedorf not so much..

In a statement made yesterday, he spoke about the Barcelona star, who is whipping himself into shape to participate in the Olympics much against his club’s wishes.
“He is very happy and motivated,” said Paixao. “He has rediscovered his joy, and is once again the Ronaldinho we all knew.”
“He has been very cooperative in the work we are doing to improve his physical form, and take him back to his best.”
“Even though he has been idle for a long time, he may already be in top shape by the 22nd of July.”

Guti and Riquelme as good as Pirlo, thats a bit of a stretch…
There are a lot of people that still beleive should have won the golden ball after the CL campaign, because much of that camp recognizes that Kaka does not reach the heights he did without Pirlo. To each other they are equally important, and would probably say the same thing about each other.

The CL was owned by Kaka. And next in line was Seedorf. Then came Pirlo.
Both Riquelme and Guti are on their day as good any in the world.

I think Milan should have made a move for Cigarini.. And let him play in a rotation with Seedorf, so that next year, the 3 in the midfield would be Cigarini – Flamini – Pirlo until Pirlo leaves..

Dinho for 15 million.. Ade for at least 30..
Two Dinho’s for two Adebayors.. Are you kidding me?

but cigarini for seedorf doesnt make sense. i had montolivo in mind. next year when we get back to the cl, we need to bring him into the squad

Moka, that wily old bastard Wenger would’ve rorted Bonny and Clyde even, had they been club owners.
After peddling Anelka and Henry to no less than Real and Barca, he now wants to get one over Milan too, the bastard.

Sushan of course I’d love Montolivo.. I have a lot of admiration for him, but it’s a bit far-fetched, considering Viola’s strong push into the top clubs in Italy.. And plus, we won’t spend the cash, and Viola won’t sell..
Yes A, but I just read they dropped the price to 17 mil pounds, which is like 21.25 mil Euros.. Hmm..

Maybe Galliani is not such a fool after all!

Nah he’s still a mad fool in my eyes.. until the day I read we signed someone.. Then he becomes a bit less of a fool..
I’m still very very annoyed by the Milan-mentality experience always over youth.. But we’ll see this year with Abate, Darmian, Antonini..

i know viola is very competitive but milan is milan. milan and juve can pull their weight in transfers and for an italian nothing would be bigger than playing for milan or juventus. so all we need is to make an approach and i am dead sure monto wont refuse.

If both Dinho and Sheva will take serious pay cuts to come to Milan, than its a great first step of getting me on board, but it doesnt solve any long term problems, these are short term solutions that in 3-5 years put us right back at square one…

3-5 years is an age in modern terms.

Gilaa was the biggest disappointment.. I would’ve sent him out on loan to Fiorentina for one year.. He was 26, had the talent, but it just wouldn’t show..
