The Path of Success…

By: Gianfranco | November 21st, 2008

During times of prosperity we as humans have little reason to question the path towards success. It is the polar opposite of times of crisis, when we are always questioning and wondering how we have fallen on such a poor path. The last ten games for AC Milan in Serie A are a perfect analogy to this, with ten games without a loss we are experiencing a bit of comfort that has eluded this squad for a very long time. However in this comfort we are neglecting, to some extent, the critical eye that has always made Rossoneri fans some of the most intelligent and well read fans in the entire soccer world.

Sure ten games without a loss is a honeymoon of epic proportion, and when you look at the fixture list you see some draws and some very close wins. But you and I know that these wins were far from easy and this squad is looking good from afar but at times it is also looking far from good.

In attack the team has lacked the cutting edge needed to score goals by the bagful, but at times also lacks the proficiency for that finish touch. For a team that a few years ago scored more goals than any other Serie A team in history, and has only added offensive skill since then, it is a bit unnerving that the goals are coming more from PK’s and set pieces than free flowing play. The defense has also looked shaky at times, but the more you watch the more it seems like a security system that has a hole or a two in it’s infrastructure. The difference from this year and past seasons is that the mistakes by the defense have not been crucial to the game, and Abbiati has been able to come up with the big system when asked.

The shining spot has been Milan’s ability to possess the ball in the midfield as well as challenge and win balls around the center circle. This is promising because they are capable of solid midfield play without arguably the best midfield maestro in all of Italy in Andrea Pirlo. The return of Pirlo should only further the skill of the midfield and one can only hope that his return will benefit the anemic attack as well.

At 2:30 EST on Sunday Milan will travel to Torino to play a squad coming off a loss, and more importantly losing 3 of the last 5. This is a team capable of victory but with Rosina riding the pine, and the unlucky break for Milan fans to have Abate injured for this match. The talent for Torino is not at the level of the Rossoneri and if the Rossoneri can catch a spark and find the net early and often, it is just what the Doctor order to kick start his offense and get this team moving with some steam prior to the tough December and January schedule.

Odds and Ends

Milan and Real Madrid will forever be linked as the two most successful clubs in CL history, but as of late they have been linked with a bit more. It is not secret that Sergio Ramos is a great player, and many have even have the audacity to compare him to Paolo Maldini. I wouldn’t go that far just yet considering the esteem in which Il Capitano is held, but Ramos would make a nice addition to the Rossoneri next season. Uncle Fester has denied such claims, probably because Ramos does not fit the bill of aging star, or overweight Brazilian, but we can only hope there is a shred of validity to these claims as we wait anxiously for the rearming of the Milan defense.

That is not the only Madrid rumor however; it seems that Real has a bit of interest in our own Carletto. We all remember the last very successful Milan coach to leave for Madrid, and the success he was able to achieve domestically. But Madrid fans and management want more than just domestic success; they want the glory that has been out of this club’s grasp for what seems like ages. Uncle Fester has also denied these claims, but with Bern Schuster getting the dreaded vow of confidence it may be this rumor has more traction than we all would like to thank. We have all at one time or another wished for the end of the Carletto era, and I am not sure how I would feel it became a reality…

Any thoughts on a Carletto for Ramos move!?

Ramos has had A LOT of bad press lately at RM…He makes one truthful comment, and they rip him a new one (At least he was taught not to lie)

I have a feeling that if he didn’t have the agent he did, His brother Rene and had one that was better and more into the business and not into it to make his pocket bigger, there wouldn’t be these rumors. Rene isn’t stupid, he knows that Milan have money and that they are willing to spend it on him. I have a feeling that Rene is the one that is “leaking” this info to get more press on his brother. Anyways I’ve spent WAAAYYYY to much talking about Sergio and Rene. I’m done now I promise

A few months ago I would never have thought Ramos would leave RM for another club, but it seems like he’s not totally at ease there. He would still cost a fair amount of money, money that I’m not so sure Milan will spend. Perhaps if they win the scudetto and stick to their recent policy of acquiring one expensive addition to the squad per season, they might go for Ramos given Maldini’s impending retirement and Nesta’s woes. But if Milan win the scudetto I don’t think Carletto will be going anywhere.

Ramos is maybe good player but very bad man.I saw him 2 weeks ago against malaga when he trampled on purpose one malaga player on chest.Very controversal and dont compare him to maldini please – the best player ever and a great man.And in regard to that story about milan in bad shape trust me about this you will see us crushing torino on sunday and you will see us winning calcio.
Carletto in Real?Funny…The best ac milan coach ever ,besides capello and rocco, who won 2 champions leagues.Really stupid of someone praying for him to leave. And all those shit about xmas tree and not been able to score with xmas tree.WE WON FUCKING CL WITH XMAS TREE AND PUT MAN UTD 3 GOALS IN NET WITH FUCKING TREE AND PLEASE LET THE MAN TO PLAY HIS XMAS TREE WHEN HE KNOWS WHAT IS DOING AND HE DOES THAT THE BEST.
Ah its just people today dont get that nowdays everyone knows to play football and when we host chievo we dont host retards who cannot stand on their legs and instead of being happy of 3 points we raise so much unnecessary stories.
Sorry but i got mad about stories these day…stories like this topic..ain’t gonna give a single more word about this…Just remember these words when we capture scudetto in may

Pera if you read the post, you would notice I did not compare Ramos to Maldini and in fact even said, “some people have the audacity to compare the to.”

As for the xmas tree, yes it worked, but it doesnt mean it will work forever, this team at times lives in the past to a fault and because teams like Chievo “knows to play football” as you put it, then they know how to crack the xmas tree.

I am interested to see Pirlo play this week. It remains to be seen whether he will be as capable as Rino in covering for what I feel is a shaky backline that has been exposed as very vulnerable to counters. I know that he adds alot to our overall attack but I feel our recent deficiencies have not been in creating chances but in finishing them. I hope that I am wrong and that Rino and Flamini/Ambro can chase everyone down and allow Pirlo to take advantage of our speed up front, but remember we didn’t start our winning ways until Andrea went down injured and Rino/Seedorf started playing back. Once those two started playing back the backline has been much less vulnerable to the counters that killed us against Bologna and Genoa, games that we otherwise mostly dominated. Oh well, we’ll see.

With Pirlo back, we don’t need the creativity of both Kaka and Dinho. We need to get the goals, and the best way to do that tomorrow is to start Pato, Sheva/Inzaghi in front of Dinho (on form). Then bring on Kaka in the 2nd half. Pirlo – Gattuso – Flamini in the midfield, although I wouldn’t mind Pirlo – Gattuso – Seedorf.

Players leaving Milan, either on loan or permanently seem to be having a gala time. To name, first it was Gilardino, then Gourcuff and now it’s Massimo Oddo. Oddo is providing delightful crosses from nowhere and believe me he’s even taking goal creating corners for Bayern.

Looking ahead for Pirlo today. What about Ambrosini? I’d like to see him, instead of Flamini, cause of his experience in such crucial games. Kaka should be on the bench, especially after the international break and he seems to be worn out, in last few matches. Guessing what would Ancelotti prefer, Dorf along with Rhonie or two strikers upfront.

Either way, I don’t want to see a 1-0 victory again.

Why is Sheva not getting a chance? He’s not impressing Carletto in training I think.

    Forza Milan!!

I’m with Peter somewhat regarding Pirlo. I think Milan may lose something when they push Gattuso from centre to make room for Pirlo. Reno’s tackling ability has been very important lately and very effective in Pirlo’s normal position.

I didn’t realise Pirlo was back already! Would you guys agree with me that his absence has forced Gattuso into improving himself as an all round footballer? I’ve been to a few matches this season and I think Gattuso has is having one of his best seasons ever but more notably in that his passing and creativity are markedly improved on recent seasons.

    I’m guessing the formation will look like;

Abbiati; Jankulovski, Kaladze, Favalli, Bonera; Pirlo, Gattuso, Flamini; Kaka, Dinho; Inzaghi

Ancelotti said Pato, Kaka, Dinho cannot play together. :|

Wow! I thought Murinho wanted to sabatoge Shevchenko’s career, but I guess we have a new challenger…How can Sheva ever score if he never gets 2 starts in a row let alone a couple minutes at the end of every fifth game. If you’re not gonna play him then maybe he should go to Madrid. Milan disrespect Shevchenko.

I wouldnt call it disrespect, Sheva has done nothing to warrant a start or a bucket of minutes…let his play do the talking not his past.

I don’t think Sheva was Ancelotti’s choice. But I do think that he was acquired because Milan needed another striker, and there was not much downside to the deal. They got him without breaking the bank, so if he succeeds the value on the deal is immense. If he is a flop, at least Milan doesn’t lose money (as they did on Oliveira). We haven’t heard the last from Sheva, but I do think his situation is different from Dinho. Dinho’s form dropped, I feel, due to lack of motivation. Sheva’s dropped due to diminished physical ability – hence the lack of play time.
