State of Affairs: Midfield

By: Gianfranco | May 28th, 2008

I am going to take a state of affairs for each position at Milan and then hopefully onto a state affairs for Serie A and UEFA.

Midfield…

This has to be Milan’s strong point on both the attacking and defensive side of the ball. Already with Kaka, Pirlo, Rino, and Ambro Milan had a very admirable midfield, however, when those guys were hurt, tired, or suspended the team suffered and so did their performances. The focus of the brass was to get a midfielder who could fill in for Rino and Ambro, and also play first team football when needed. Their successful coup of Flamini from Arsenal solves this problem very nicely. Flamini can come in as well as spell and keep fresh the main four, this rotation gives Carletto the confidence to make hopefully makes subs and keep the team fresh throughout the season.

We also can’t forget the availability of Seedorf and possibly Gourcuff who is yet to be sent away on loan as I had anticipated. Gourcuff may prove to be a very valuable bench player next season and also a great partner for Flamini and fill in for the Seedorf or Kaka role in the xmas tree.

The important thing is that Carletto has players on the bench to create as well as fill in the pivotal roles CAM and CDM.

Outside of Flamini their has been very little discussion of Milan entertaining further mids but with strengthening in the back and front pressure will be removed from the likes of Pirlo and Kaka and should free them to play their football and make Milan a more formidable squad from front to back.

Milan are interested in bringing back Paolo Sammarco from Sampdoria. He played well last year.

really the midfield does still need some help for you guys i think. i wish you would somehow poach essien from chelsea. he’s at least 5 yrs younger that gattuso and has that same sort of mold as a tireless worker and straight beast when you need him. there does need to be a seedorf replacement soon too, he’s old. i like how gourcuff plays, i like the potential he has but i dont know if he’s really a first teamer…then again it’s not like he’s ever had the real chance to find that out.

A Emerson played well!? Are we watching the same games!? 15 appereances with only two starts, I can not recall a single good thing from his play and would love to be reminded if there were any, the Viola game does not ring a bell for me. He is way beyond his prime and had no business on the squad in the first place, and can by no means be relied upon in the rebuilding process.

What Flamini can do that Brocchi could not is to fill in for either Rino or Ambro on either side. So those three can be rotated fairly nicely and keep everyone fresh. Mix in Gourcuff and Clarence and you know have a very nice midfield rotation, what worries me really is the lack of backup for Pirlo, but that is like saying do you have someone to back up Paolo? Sure there is a player there but you will never replace what Pirlo does for you…you can look for that player but you will never find him. The young mids Steven mentions are all fantastic but only time will tell if they can match Pirlo.

gian nobody expects luca cigarini to be as good as pirlo. the bottom line is that he has a same style as pirlo and if pirlo gets injured/suspended we can play someone in the same mould not brochhi. so in the end it wont hurt us that much

Yes I was watching the same games GF and frankly you have lots of preconceived ideas about certain players that don’t budge no matter what they do.

In all the games that I saw Emerson start and come in, he did well. IIRC, he played well against Juve at San Siro too. Yes he’s past his prime, but does not mean we can just do without him in the squad when all you got in the defensive midfield position is Gattuso, Ambro and Flamini.

Matt, any team with any idea about the game would want Essien with them. He’s a football machine.

A – the current mid is ok but your spot on with regard to the lack of depth, which time and time again has been exposed (hence the 5th place finish – duh!).

I would love to add Essien as well as Ribery to the mid.

But Emerson has got to go, i cant remember watching him where he looked like he was part of the same team.

I watched him for soo long at Roma & Juve and he was a great player but is nowhere near as good as he used to be.

How many times this season did he needlessly lash the ball over the goal when he could have just as easily passed?!

Who does the think he is, Gourcuff? (snigger – nah, i like the wee frenchman, his errors come from lack of experience, Emersons come from being past it!).

Keeping Emerson in the squad is counter productive and just adds to the problem with our midfield. With him gone we can justify splashing out on a replacement.

apparently we have one of the most powerful and strongest midfield around in italia but one area im worried about that we dont have debt in or hardly use is the wide midfield anology lets face it most of the best players in the world play wide C.ronaldo ronaldinho and ricardo Quaresma, inter having signed mourinho or apparently going after the portuguese midfielder who i feel is more skillful than cronaldo himself so i am putting my vote up for a new winger in midfield. seedorf kinda plays wide?…

if we started playing with wingers now we’d have to get two world class wings and subs for them and completely reconstruct the midfield roles. carletto’s wing game is based on wingbacks who can attack so i think we should put some effort in acquiring some real talent there.

I would love for us to keep Gourcuff and actually try to use him next year, and I am crazy excited about the Flamini addition. Plus, it’s very nice to have at least one section of the team we don’t have to obsess about. (Though I do feel you could have used a better Flamini picture, for the ladies, Gian!)

Oh, and I’m off to stalk Gattuso, Ambro and Pirlo in Florence today, plus Gila’s somewhere here… it’s a happening city today!

And thanks Gila, we part on good terms. This is def the best for everyone.

Hey, going back to the midfield topic, Bruce Buck the Chelsea chairman has said that the club feels that it has TOO big a squad and are likely to trim their numbers by about 5/6 players!

Lets put in bids for Cudicini, Bridge, Carvalho & Essien!

Avia I am afraid if you were going to trim your squad Essien would not be the fat off the block, bridge is an intriguing player and Cudicini for me has always been a target because he wants to play where his father once did.
