State of Affairs: GK

By: Gianfranco | May 26th, 2008

I am going to take a state of affairs for each position at Milan and then hopefully onto a state affairs for Serie A and UEFA.

Net Minders…

For the first time in a long time, say ten years ago, Milan has a glaring void between the pipes. Gone are the days of Rossi, Abbiatti, and Dida, and in are the days are searching for someone to fill a spot that has always been fairly unglamorous due to the likes of Maldini, Desailly, Baresi and Costacurta standing in front.

Nelson Dida’s meltdown all began against Celtic in the CL when he feigned and flopped the single worst moment that I have ever witnessed in a soccer game.

As if that incident was not enough he then went one better and did this…

Needless to say, all that led to the end for Nelson Dida., and the beginning of the Aussie Spider Kalac. I have to say that Kalac filled in extremely admirably in a highly pressurized situation. In fact if Kalac was 25 or 27 it would be very easy to slide him into the starting role next season, but like most of the squad he is on the wrong side of thirty and not the long term answer to anything at the San Siro. This leaves a big hole for Uncle Fester and company to fill, and a position that Milan has had difficulty filling properly in the past.

For me the most logical and economic decision is to bring Abbiatti home. He has succeeded at San Siro before meaning experience and pressure is not an issue. It also means that Carletto can slot in a keeper who he can trust and has trusted in the past and even with the armband. Plus he is free!!!!!!! That means more money to be used elsewhere.

If Fester must open the wallet than it may as well be for the number two Italian goalie in the world, Marco Amelia. This also makes a fair amount of logical sense because Amelia wants out of Livorno, and will not pull a Gigi and stay in Serie B. Amelia also wants to test his mettle in Euro play and his age allows him to swallow a year of UEFA football in hopes of CL the following season. His move to Milan would also be one of the best opportunities for the Rossoneri to have an Azzurri GK for the first time that I can remember.

Now because those two moves make all the sense in the world, it most likely means that Fester is not even considering them so it leaves us with a what do we do now scenario. If a big move for a keeper is going to be made, with money being spent, the deal has to be for Boruc. The Celtic keeper is a younger version of Frey with more upside, and lesser cost. Boruc has also played in the Champions League quite a few times meaning that he is capable of the high pressure environments.

GK’s are different animal and it is nice to have a young one, but with a young goalie comes young mistakes and Milan are not in any position to accept that, therefore it is best to look at what is readily available.

    Agreed fully.. especially about age..

Since Milan love old players, why don’t they stick to their famous policy and get an old goalkeeper?

Leave the younger ones for outfield players..

I’m not sure what happened between Milan and Lloris, but tell Fester thanks!

Inara, I believe it had to do with Lloris demading playing time, such as a game quota. That cant work with a young goalie period. I am not sure if it is true, but its a really good reason for negotiations to fail.

How about bringing back Marco Storari who had a good season with Cagliari?

That’s pretty strange because L’Equipe reported that Lloris had agreed to terms with Milan, but that Nice and Milan couldn’t agree on a fee. When a spot at Lyon opened up, Lloris didn’t bother pushing Nice to find a deal with Milan, especially because Lyon are willing to outbid whatever Milan are offering.

As things stand, Lloris isn’t guaranteed playing time at OL either (though he probably will eventually be our #1 since our current #2, Vercoutre, isn’t as good). But Lloris is very very good (he’s better than Frey in a year or two will be better than Coupet) and has three years experience of being Nice’s #1 keeper. He’s honestly the fourth best young player in France after Benzema, Ben Arfa, and Nasri. I’m honestly surprised that Milan let him slip by because he’s already frighteningly good and will only get better.

I believe Abbiati loan deal has buyout clause, so Atletico has the option to buy him. So Milan must be serious about it if they’re trying to get Abbiati, and I doubt Fester will. He’s as fester as he has been.

We can consider Coupet. Agreed he is old,but for a couple of years, he could be a good signing.

There is no reason we can’t or shouldn’t get Amelia. The rest of the big Italian four are pretty much set (Gigi is world class, Doni is solid and so is Julio Cesar over at Inter) We know he’s going to be clamoring to get out of Serie B so why don’t we just take advantage of this and get ourselves the future Azzuri netminder?

Abbiati is happy at Atletico, and it seems like theyre happy with him, so buyout clause or not, I think they’re gonna try and keep him.

Although I’m partial to Amelia, a Frey for Gila switch wouldnt be too bad…

i have one problem for amelia.

hes been in the magnifying glass for nearly 3 years now as a top gk, yet nobody has acquired him. why is that?

its kind of like chasing the hottest girl in school, but everybody but you knows that she has syphilis, or even herpes.

theres something fishy about amelia, and theres a reason why his stock has DROPPED in the past year. i dont think we should get him.

frey or boruc, preferably frey. but no amelia, hes an STD waiting for an outbreak…

I agree on Abbiati. He would be the best solution. Gomez from PSV has always been a hot topic as well. If Dida doesn’t leave then we would have a lot of goalies. Dida, Kalac, I guess Fiori will retire, but Abbiati returns, Coppola returns as well as Storari. Offredi was in the squad acouple of times. I’d say go for Abbiati as no 1. Coppola as backup and Offredi as no 3. Get rid of the rest.

Something that makes me wonder: Two years ago, when we had to start with -8 Points, the excuse of not investing in the team was the calciopoli scandal and that the management was not sure what to do. Last year the excuse for not buying any players was that the management wasn’t sure if we play CL or not. Now we know it is UEFA Cup but certainly a lot less money. And all of a sudden Milan is able to purchase expensive players? I don’t know but I don’t believe there will be expensive signings like Eto’o or such. They will try to go the cheapest way possible. Let the loan outs return and try to get some free transfers ala Flamini.

Shehan - wat are you on???

Lol’d really hard to yor Amelia comments! But your def right, there is something fishy as i havnt heard anyone else chasing him!

Gian - i suggested waaaaay back about bringing back Abbiatti (nah nah!) but im thinking along the lines that because the Gila/Viola deal is on the way through why not offer them Brocchi/Oddo also for Frey????

Frey looks a far better long term bet in my eyes than Amelia.

Shehan, Frey is one injury away from a long spell on the bench. He has both knee and shoulder problems and the last few games with Fiorentina were truly a show of fortitude. He is also on the south of thirty, so he to has reliability issues.

I disagree Gian about him having reliablitiy issues b/c he’s on the wrong side of 30.. He’s an exception b/c from what I’ve seen he’s incredible..

But the injuries are an issue.. Injury-prone player + Milan physios = transvestites.. :P

quite frankly i havent always been big on Borriello. yes he did very good and scored this season, but so did Gila. id rather get Eto’o or Drogba over him. getting him means we failed in the transfer market in regards of a striker.

    who is this kid? anyone……………….
    Rossoneri Keen On Sammarco
Milan have set their eyes on bringing home Sampdoria midfielder Paolo Sammarco.
Sammarco is at the Blucerchiati as part of a co-ownership deal between both clubs.

He was a part of the Milan youth system but he never once played a senior game for the Rossoneri as he was sent out on loan to various lower league sides during his development.

In 2007 he went to Samp as a co-owned player but now the Rossoneri want him back in Milan on a permanent basis according to Sampdoria director Beppe Marotta.
“Milan have wanted to take Sammarco back to San Siro for quite a while now,” said Marotta.

“He is a good, young player who is getting better all the time and he would be useful in Europe for Milan.
does anybody know what position that kid plays in midfield cause if he is good he would be a fantastic addition.
