State of Affairs: Backline

By: Gianfranco | May 27th, 2008

I am going to take a state of affairs for each position at Milan and then hopefully onto a state affairs for Serie A and UEFA.

Backline…

Historically Milan’s foundation and building block for some of the best clubs in history.

Presently the biggest questions mark and void on the squad. Even with Paolo returning it leaves the backline overly seasoned and very little youth to strengthen themselves for the future. The youngest defender currently seeing first team football is Bonera, and he is 28, you can see the problem.

I also don’t believe that there is a problem with our veteran players on defense but they need to used less, and mixed in with more youth. Milan have always had fantastic success with raising defenders in the club, and the youth products of Marzoratti and Darmian are not exception. There is no reason why these youngsters can’t get first team football alongside the likes of Nesta, Maldini, and Oddo to become successful worldclass defenders.

I want to start this discussion though by advocating the retention of Oddo. Oddo is a very solid defender and one of the few who can really haul it up the wing as is expected from Carletto. With this said selling Oddo may not be in the club’s best interest, yes his crosses can go into orbit at times, and his play last season may not of been his best, but we all know what he can do and what he is capable of. You can never have enough defenders and he is one of the ones you do not want to get rid of, for fear of not finding a comparable replacement.

The question then becomes who is a comparable replacement? Well for me Udinese is a great place to start with Dossena and Zapata. The likelihood of both players making their way out of Udine and to the San Siro is unlikely but sneaking one of them out should not be a problem and should in fact be a priority. I prefer Zapata here, but Dossena is no slouch, you have to figure if Milan can get one of those fellas and Zambrotta as well, it will hold them over nicely.

With the potential of growth from the youngsters, and the chance of sneaking Evra away from ManU when his contract expires next season, as long as Fester plays his cards right he has the potential of rearming the single treasure that is the Rossoneri, the defense.

    A – Evra = S***e? compared to Bonera/Jank I assume??

I get that the fact that people are saying Evra isnt that good or that Clichy is better but stop and cast your minds back to the season just gone!

The number of matches, where like me, you guys must have been watching through closed fingers as time and time again our defence would just cave in on itself. It was like watching a comedy of horrors!

And as Steven and Ranjeet have also said, we can get Evra on a free, even better! Take Zambro and Zapata this season and we’re laughing by the time we get to the CL the following season!

For me, defence comes first, all Milan teams have been characterised by lean defences, powerful midfields and killer attacks.

Our current midfield with new addition Flamini is still a great combo (they need a quiet summer tho) and look at how our goalscoring picked up in the last 7/8 matches so we’re not THAT far off attack wise, but our defence is MOST in need of a makeover.

Many a match this season was characterised by us oohing and aahing over Oddos performance one match only for us to turn on him for his sloppy attempts the following Sunday.

Oddo reminds me of a car when you are turning the key in the ignition but it struggles to start, you keep turning the key and egg it on, that’s what it feels like we have treated Oddo this season, he tried, we wanted him to catch on but he just couldn’t and his season spluttered to a close and he didn’t climb in my admiration of him. (Or move from where he was at the start of the season).

Time for an Oddo part exchange Gian. (He’s low mileage! Oddo & Gila to the Viola for Frey??)

I sometimes worry that there is more celebrity attached to the strikers and that we are currently being distracted with big money names like Dino, Eto and Drogba when it should be big time established defenders that we should be chasing.

I just hope that Galliani isn’t trying to distract us by dangling potential strikers!!

i have just been on goal.com and i can confirm that we are set to sign evra on a free im not a fan of his but he would be a fantastic asset to this team and we are signing a new brasilan CB milan Target Miranda
The Corriere della Sera understands AC Milan are interested in São Paulo central defender Miranda I dont know anything about this dude so lets just hope he is good. borriello looks set to come back regardless Rossoneri Will Take Back Borriello-Agent
Genoa striker Marco Borriello is likely to return to Milan next season according to his agent. event though i dont think he will have afirst team place and also:Milan & Juve Quarrel For Quagliarella
According to reports in Italy, Milan and Juventus are set to go toe-to-toe this summer for the signature of Udinese forward Fabio Quagliarella. so the way i see it if we dont sign eto’o or if borriello doesn’t come back we will still end up with a quality foward we cant miss out on all three.

galliani is just playing down all the dinho rumors and i dont blame him i believe we will end up with a quality striker and we are selling gilan emerson and brocchi that should give us enough to buy a quality foward!

FabQuags would be an excellent asset, and a great pair up with Borriello or Pato. As for Miranda it is the first I have heard.

Evra on a free transfer is almost a no brainer!! ITS FREE!!

Best of luck to Gila and thanks for the memories, hope he doesnt make a habit of scoring at the San Siro against Milan in the years to come…

Alberto Gilardino has completed a transfer from Milan to Fiorentina after agreeing a five-year deal with a reduced salary.

Since joining Milan from Parma in 2005, Gilardino’s career has stalled and he has slipped down the pecking order with the arrival of Alexandre Pato and the resurgence of Pippo Inzaghi.

After weeks of negotiations, Gila is now headed for a fresh start at Fiorentina as the swoop was announced on the club’s website

Gilardino has agreed to take a sizeable pay cut to put pen to paper on a deal worth around £1.3m for five years plus bonuses in the event he scores more than 20 goals.

The former Azzurri hitman is willing to earn half his San Siro wages, but is reportedly excited by the prospect of linking up with former Parma and Verona teammate Adrian Mutu.

The official presentation will take place tomorrow morning at 11.30 and he will report back from holiday on July 7.

Galliani said that Ronaldo will leave and with Gila leaving too,he said we will sign 2 strikers. He doesnt want to pay a lot for Eto’o,though, which is stupid.I thought we had quite a lot of money. Now’s the time to spend it,you idiot.

    Official: Gila To Viola.

goodbye Gila, thanks for everything i truly hope the best for you. we all had fun with our Gila-Mania. Ciao.

now i think Milan should get the Zambro-Eto’o deal. Barca want around 50 million, Milan want to spend 40 mil. i say just step up the 10 mil and get them. Milan are so frugal, its a good thing but sometimes you just need to spend to get what you want or you’ll be the one sitting in the corner alone in the end saying, we were gonna sign him and him…

we must becareful, Mourinho is going to Inter and love it or hate it we gotta admit he’ll do some work there. probably start with bringing Drogba there.

Fet – i am kinda worried at what will happen at the merda now.

They will ALL get a new lease of life, new players also to go with a fairly decent existing squad.

I was hoping for that kinda spark to come to us, have lost alot of belief in Carlo motivating our guys.

Buy Panucci!! Why is everyone obssessed with strikers damit!

I’m very disappointed that Barzagli went to Wolfsburg.. like wtf?.. no seriously wtf?.. !!!!! Why didn’t Milan try and make a move for him??

I’m saving the striker discussions for GF’s post about strikers.. :D

In other news, Montolivo axed from Italy..

Best of luck to Gila. Here’s to hoping that he’ll discover his best years yet under Prandelli.

Completely unrelated to our present discussion topic of the backline…BUT NO MEXES? NO FLAMINI? Oy, didn’t think that Mexes’ injury was that bad. And Flames..That’s really disappointing for both of them. Seriously.

    Mexes is injured..

Flamini was omitted because they have enough defensive mids.. Vieira, Diarra, Makelele.. all of which have a lot of international experience.. so I doubt Flamini would have played if he went..
