Last Ditch Effort…

By: Gianfranco | July 15th, 2008

I just don’t really know what to say anymore. These past few days have been extremely taxing on me with all these Dinho yes, Dinho no, Adebayor yes, Adebayor no, and so on. We all know how I feel about the whole thing, and I am slowly doing my best to rationalize and digest the potential move of Ronaldinho to Milan. The problem with my rationalizing is just that, I am to rational. I watched Joga Bonito videos on you tube till my eyes dried out, watching Ronaldinho do things that one can only hope to duplicate, but no matter what I watch I just can not come to grips with this man’s presence in the red and black.

The real only plus I see at this moment and time would be the possible financial windfall from his face being plastered on everything again, and the Milan logo right next to him. I also see Milan becoming one of the first place where Nike branded players, Pato and Dinho, will co-exist on an Adidas sponsored team. One has to imagine that image rights and so on are being fervently discussed behind the scenes as we speak, so that both brands are well taken care of. But once this notion of marketing glory fades, I can’t really find happiness in anything else related to this move. I do know that many of you are for it, and I respect that, and ultimately if he does arrive, I will have to do my best to come to grips with the idea, but I certainly do not have to support him early on. He will have to earn that like many of the Rossoneri greats before him, even Pato has yet to fully grow and develop for me, but unlike Dinho, I can’t wait to see the heights that Pato may reach.

My biggest issue that stops me in my tracks every time is the fitness and form. The Ronaldo, R9, situation has left me so jaded that after seeing the last pictures of the once superstar, made me almost feel bad for a man who has literally fallen from the top of the world. With that kind of decline health, how can one ever hope to get their body back to where it was meant to be, but even worse what is there to stop these guys from taking things to the excess and ruining careers that have already achieved more than most before the age of 30. Adriano, Ronaldo, and now Ronaldinho have shown that when the going gets tough, these guys get fat, plain and simple.

The other issue that for me is that as a Milan fan the club comes before any player, except of course Paolo, who in my eyes is the foundation that the club is currently built on. With that being said a move for Ronaldinho may make sense off the pitch as I stated above, but on the pitch it leaves me wondering and scratching my head. For me the development of Pato is a very important part of the Milan plan this coming season, as he needs to continue to grow into a viable striker. The best way for Pato and Milan to do that is to pair him with a veteran type striker, or a big time point man. This takes pressure off Pato, allows him to roam around the box, and helps him to continue to grow. Pato for me is more than just an out and out striker; the kid can hold and create, and at times plays in almost a hybrid style of Kaka and Dinho combined. Pato is a special player, and I can’t even begin to tell you how angry I would be if the arrival of Dinho affects his ability now and in the future, or worse disrupt the locker room.

Speaking of the locker room, I would expect Clarence to ask for a transfer in the days following the Dinho deal. The only logical place for Dinho, at least for me, and clearly for Carletto as well is to be slotted alongside Kaka in the second to last tier of the xmas tree. I would rather that spot for Pato, but clearly it will be where Dinho roams, and if Clarence who occupied that spot in steller fashion last season loses it to a player who is a out of form and fitness, just because he is Ronaldinho, is a disgrace to a consummate professional, and I would support Clarence wherever he decides to finish his career. Arsenal anyone?

Ronaldinho in that spot also leads me to my final point, in WC 06 Brazil seemed to have a very hard time getting the ball in gear in the attacking third. Too many cooks in the kitchen really, and I do not see that as that much of an issue at Milan because we only have Kaka. But having Ronaldinho will either relieve Kaka of some offensive pressure, god I hope so, or render a bit of a Brazilian ā€˜06 syndrome of not having enough cohesion to make this work. In all honesty they are both great and I do not see it as much of a problem because Dinho worked well with Iniesta and Xavi in the Barca heyday, but the chemistry of this team is all to strong to going ruin things because of one guy. One does not have to look to far to the last Brazilian who did nothing but bitch, and we all know where he ended up. Actually most people don’t because Rivaldo ended up in the obscurity of Greece…

I don’t want Dinho, I can’t make myself want Dinho, but I will try, because for the good of Milan that is what I should do.

No Colin b/c I’d rather Kaka and Dinho have as much space as possible.. Pirlo and Flamini don’t need space, so it’s better if Seedorf plays alongside them and pushes up a bit..

Dinho’s arrival should have a positive effect on Seedorf, b/c there’s more competition so he’s gonna strive more to do well.. That’s if he loves Milan..

    We’ll see..

Don’t be surprised if we end up depending on SuperPippo.. I think it’s gonna be him and Borriello competing for that striker position.. Pato will start on the bench, I believe when the whole squad is available..

It’s a really good and versatile team.. Ancelotti can start :

GK; Jankulovski, Maldini, Nesta, Zambrotta; Flamini, Pirlo, Seedorf; Kaka, Dinho; Borriello

Then 2nd half, bring in Kaladze, Pippo or Pato..

Tactical changes are easy.. if he wants to go defensive, take out 1 of Seedorf, Kaka, Dinho and bring on Gattuso or Ambrosini..

If he wants to go attacking, take out Seedorf, Kaka or Dinho and put on Pato or Pippo..

It’s a risk sending Paloschi out on a loan tho.. If Borriello is injured, Pippo can’t play a full 90 minutes.. it’s gonna be a problem.. and Aubameyang is out on loan too.. :|

Im hoping that Boriello can step up 2 the plate now as our biggest problem last season was scoring even when we dominated play. Pippo should really be used as a Super-Sub really imo.

Shehan - not sure i follow you when you say Pato is a gamble, as surley wee Ducky has proved his worth already no?

J - Welcome back! (And yes, im also hoping that we can get a Ka-Pa-Ro mkII working well together).

One person who was expected to not be too happy with the Brazilian’s arrival is Milan star Clarence Seedorf, who has publicly opposed his signing.

The Dutchman has warned on numerous occasions that he isn’t prepared to play in a deeper role to accommodate Ronaldinho, nor will he hand over his No.10 shirt.

Only a couple of weeks ago Seedorf stated: “Ronaldinho is no good for us because we have many other players for the same position.

ā€œI think the team have other needs, but I am not responsible for the signings.”

Following the capture of Ronaldinho, the Italian media have been predicting fireworks to fly off between the pair this coming campaign.

However, it is being reported this morning that the duo have already made the peace, with Seedorf agreeing to help Ronaldinho with charity work for the ā€˜Champions of Children’ organisation, which helps poor children in Porto Alegre.

Furthermore, it is also being speculated that Seedorf has agreed to give up his No.10 shirt to the Brazilian. There may be an economic angle to this decision though, as the company that controls Ronaldinho’s image is called ā€˜R10’, meaning that they would obviously be demanding that their commodity was handed that number.

Moka, you are right, as I said the man is a consumate pro, which is why you cant argue if he wants to go, yet he surprises when he does something like this. Classy stuff!

Colin, using that Roma formation would be dependent on players who find comfort on the wings, which seems to be a Roma plus, Milan does not have those types of players. Milan has freewheeling trequatistas that dont always stick to a flank and stay on thier side, they are more dependent on moving around, being creative, and confusing defenses.

    I totally get this statement.

As the rest of the world looks in on us, they must be thinking ā€œOMG! They have Kaka AND Dino!ā€ and would likely be shocked to hear that not every Milanista is crying tears of joy.

Now, don’t get me wrong, if the Dino we all know and love returns this team will tear the backside outta the whole of Serie A next season (here’s hoping!).

If you recall what our main problem last season was: Our mid passed and passed and passed and passed the ball around with no end result.

This was the reason I alluded to the need for a ā€œBattering Ramā€ type of striker ala Benzema, Drogba et al.

How much does Dino have riding on him if he doesn’t recapture his former level considering that we still have Kaka, Pirlo (and Seedorf hopefully!). Lets hope they get the “business” side of things outta the way before the season starts.

The person we should REALLY be scrutinising is Boriello as I believe that once his signature was captured it turned our attention towards Dino.

Boriello is the one who really should have more weight on his shoulders as I believe that we should be using Super Pips as a Super Sub.

Boriello is the one who will need to sit atop of Carlos xmas tree and turn all the midfields work into goals because THAT’’S what we needed last season.

as much as i am excited to see Dinho recapture his form with milan, it’s painful to watch someone like seedorf (a class player both on and off the pitch) get pushed aside in favor of a player who may be more valuable to the club as a marketing icon than a player to his team.

that being said, seedorf being the professional that he is, will surely find a way to cope with the situation and perhaps play even better under the pressure of another pure #10 breathing down his neck.

Avia, no offense to you or Borriello but if you were the one playing in front of the likes of Kaka, Pato, Seedorf and Pirlo I think the goals will come, they have to? I dont care if he if scores them with his nose, face, and knees, he just has to get confident and score. He has shown he can do it both the easy way and the hard way, so lets see it at Milan.

I am pulling for this guy 100%! It is good for Milan, and the Azzurri if he becomes a dominate force in the Serie A and beyond.

Im just highlighting the little doubt i have about Boriello but will be pinning my hopes on this guy! I want him to become our next Massaro or Marco Simone!!

U cant say u r 100% certain that he is gona get a goal a game just yet. Im praying (like everyone else i imagine) that he isnt a one season wonder!

PS: Gian - I would loooooove to play in front of Kaka, Pato, Seedorf & Pirlo!

i agree with the people that said that seedorf is going to really make it hard for ancelotti to bench him… he is going to work very hard and i think we will see seedorf’s best in the next few weeks…

do you guys remember when gourcuff joined us… there is only one reason gourcuff is not here today and that is because of seedorf… gourcuff joined us and scored a goal on his debut game and was supposed to be the new zidane… and gourcuff was slowly stealing seedorf’s place in the line up… ancelotti then made him sit out for a weeek and he comes back and tears bayern munich a new one… seedorf is going to relish this competition… i think…

Italy is not in decline in the defense department. We have a lot of good kids, but they don’t get the chance they need early on. Most of the big clubs policies have changed and is now more leaning towards buying big name players and or at least someone they think can start right away. We might not see them a lot and even if we do, we do not pay them much attention, but if you watch the youth tournaments in Europe, you can easily see that they have the talent to replace some of our great defenders like Canna, and Nesta. Although I have to admit that I have not seen anyone like Maldini yet. In addition to Chiellini, Santacroce,De silvistrie,Coda,Cristico, and DeCeglie can also replace the old guard.
Shehan,Napoli bought Santacroce during the winter transfer from Brescia and they just got Andrea Russotto, don’t know how they get these kids.
Ramos is not balanced and tends to go forward a lot without getting back which have created problems for Madrid last season. The errors he makes at 22, Maldini didn’t at 17. I know that il capitano said Ramos is his heir, but I just don’t see that yet.

I don’t know Nina, this Ramos at 22 is pretty accomplished. Very much like Maldini was. You got to remember that Maldini played in a team that brought total football hustling into the modern age with players such as Baresi, Rijkaard, Albertini, Gullit et al all over the opposition when they didn’t have the ball.

Madrid play so much looser in defense and it’s a testament to Ramos’ skills that he does so well there. When it’s needed he can shut people up, just witness how he and Puyol made mince meat out of the Italy offense at the Euros.

No of course he’s no Maldini. Not yet anyway, but he is only 22 and at that age he’s not far off what Maldini was at a similar age.
