Maldini Monday, One Year Anniversary
By: Gianfranco | December 22nd, 2008It is hard to believe that today marks the one year anniversary of Maldini Monday. Last year at this time we were celebrating a World Club Cup victory and the twilight of our Captain’s exquisite career. Things did not exactly work out as planned, thankfully we got another season of Maldini who has exceeded expectations and levels of play, as always, while still playing in pivotal games when many expected far less.
As grateful as I am for the extra year of Maldini’s presence in my weekends, the content for each and every Maldini Monday is coming from deeper and deeper from the vault. In an effort to keep the content rolling and keeping it fresh I am reaching out to you for a little bit of assistant. What I would like is your Maldini memories, whatever they are, send them over to acmilan@theoffside.com. I will then post them and you will get your well deserved moment in the sun. As fans, it is a chance for us to repay the man who has really given every last ounce to Milan and to us as fans. Pick your most obscure memories, your funny memories, your sad memories, but share them so we can all weight in as well.
I will start us off with a simple little anagram, that was shown in Paolo Maldini Il Film. If you take all the letters in Maldini and rearrange them, you can come up with Di Milan which is in fact that truest statement associated with Il Grande Capitano.
I look forward to hearing from you and Forza Paolo!!!

My uncle and his family always have get-togethers with Maldini and his family. I’ll let him know.

Before Alessandro Del Piero, I had two idols in soccer.
The first, was the legendary Roberto Baggio, who became the object of my affection circa Summer 1994. Yeah, what a coincidence I know. But at that age (I was 12) the only soccer I was following was the national team.
During that time, there was another good lad (well, two actually) playing on that Azzurri squad that caught my eye. Franco Baresi retired a little too soon before I became really involved with soccer (fanatically I mean).
But the second person I started idolizing, and this being that I started playing footy as a side-back myself, was someone that to this day I consider the greatest defender that ever lived. He embodied class, elegance, efficiency, and in my eyes practically invented the on-the-ball slide tackle from behind. He was a master at those, clean challenges that dispossessed the opponent without making a foul. The poor lad that tumbled to the ground after getting the ball stolen from him, could only turn around and see our hero gallopping away, knowing full well that if he even dared complain asking for a foul, the referee would book him on principle alone.
Thank you for making us dream one more year Paolino. They say “le bandiere” are gone in soccer, that calcio is becoming a mercenary’s game. Every year, you, ADP, and Francesco Totti keep proving the naysayers wrong. And for someone to stay devoted as long as you did to one single club, and to keep playing even at 40 years of age, you deserve one big fu**ing KUDOS in bold capital letters.
Grazie.

I think it’s impossible to not respect Paolo Maldini. For me, an avowed Juventino, he is my all-time favorite player never to don the bianconero shirt. We could go on about his incredible loyalty and passion for Milan, but it’s also of course that he is one of the greatest defenders the world has ever seen. He has maintained such a high standard of play for so many years; one of the players of the tournament in 1994, and UEFA Champions League Best Defender in 2007. That is unbelievable. An absolute crime this man has never won the Ballon d’Or. Even this year, he has been one of Milan’s best defenders. Legend.
