Maldini Monday

By: Gianfranco | May 25th, 2009

Godfather of the AC Milan Offside Ultras, Avia, shares his thoughts about IL CAPITANO…

“Maldini, what superlatives & honours can you make up that havent already been attributed to him or pinned to his chest, Worlds best………., All time highest……..etc but none of these get across the magic that you witness when watching the man play

My memories of Maldini are of him in the World Cup (especially ‘94), the CL and Serie A when we were stomping the opposition, my fave memory(s) are always the slide tackle, you know the one, where a striker is running down the wing and Maldini comes from behind and robs them and they dont even know until another 3 or 4 feet that they no longer have the ball! Class! None of this smashing into a player BS, for me Maldini is for me in one word, FINESSE

Even when things look like they are getting hot on the field, players are jostling with each other, things are getting hot under the collar, Maldini can always be seen to calm a situation down just by his mere presence (Chiellini aside lol), you will always see him laughing and joking with his counterparts between any break in the play or when coming out of the tunnel, this is the sign of a great man who commands respect from opposition players and fans alike

If im honest, i had my doubts about him carrying on for one more season but with the displays he has put in im happy to publilcy admit that he has proved me wrong and greatful for the chance to finally go watch him play at the San Siro where i met up with fellow Milan Offsider Sam

We were both at the Juve match and even though it was my first time at the San Siro the event was completely overtaken by the fact that i was witnessing one of Maldinis final matches, i watched every run he made, every pass and looked on with a furrowed brow. In his own words the day he retires will be sad and im pretty sure i can safely say that around the world millions of fans will share in that sadness. For me also will be the memory of watching him having played in Milans best ever backline, NO, not with Nesta, Stam & Cafu but with Tassoti, Costacurta & Baresi and the reason for the lines of stress across the forehead was the worry that we will miss not only our Captain but the fact that we have no direct replacement for him

I will always cherish most the memories of the overlap of Baresi & Maldinis careers and truly doubt i will ever see the like again, losing Baresi was traumatic for me truth be told but the blow was lessened by the fact that we still had Maldini, no such luck this time round!

For me, we are about to lose not only one of the worlds best defenders or captains or team lynch pins but someone who is possibly our last link to a time when football WAS just about football and LOYALTY seemed to mean something

He transcends the commercialism that has now fully enveloped his sport, he even transcends his club and country like any true legend, sure we can and will find another defender but ask yourself, can you truly replace Maldini and everything he represents??

I honestly doubt it,

Forza Maldini and Grazie!

kj – imo we DID roll over for you (how else could we make ya’s look THAT good?) :D

k – Not taking ANYTHING away from U-Suck!-Dorf, he’s always been one of my faves but a kick in the ass (via whistling) might have woken him up from whatever ails him (or NOT as the case turns out)

Carlo – look, he’s the guy running the show, the ringmaster if you please. You cant blame Berlu for the squad playing pants, its Carlos JOB to make THE PLAYERS CARE ABOUT HOW THEY PLAY AND THE RESULT!!!!!! End of man.

Dida – although recently back in my good books (but out again since yesterdays performance) i will NEVER forgive him for what he did in Glasgow and i mean EVER!!

He disgraced his colours and God knows if I was Berlu i would have made an example out of him, contract or no contract he shoulda been out the door after what he did

No matter what he does from this point on, the scar he inflicted can still be felt so I have no probs with him being booed (it may serve as a reminder that some people still havnt forgiven him!)

Gila – i did feel sorry for. A victim of Carlo imo (ask Cuffy what i mean!) so def didnt deserve the boos.

why would anyone want to come to Milan anymore after what happened yesterday is beyond me..i wouldn’t be surprised if half of the dressing room is not thinking about another place to go already.

I would be lying if I didnt believe that this is the lowest point our club has been since 1998.

K I feel the same way, difference is we had maldini, albertini & costacurta to see us through. I am not as confident with the current bunch.

You can’t blame Gourcuff for wanting to stay at Bordeaux.
He’s a big fish in a small pond.

I had kinda hoped that Cuffy would give Carlo & Co the finger……..and rightly so!

k – you remember my take on how Cuffy & Paloschi were loaned out ??

I’ll bet Carlos words of “encouragement” are still ringing in Cuffys ears, hence the chance that he may not come back now (sigh)

I totally agree.I really dont know who is going to fix this problems that we have now.Especially if Carlo leaves we can expect bunch of players to go with him.Again this could become positive in some way-maybe our directorship will keep Carlo now in order to fix things.
And as for Gourcuff the thing is more then real,he wants to stay he just waited the title in france to say that he wants to stay there. And no1 can tell him a thing.

If gourcuff doesnt return here because of Carlo, its one thing, but if Ancelotti is gone and Gourcuff chooses to stay at Bourdeux, I dont think he has the mental strength to play here.

No offence to Bourdeux but players would choose that club over a club like Milan unless they cannot handle the pressure.

If I were gourcuff I would wait till next week when the coaching situation is sorted out before making his final decision.

Avia, thats rather vengeful of you. Whether you like Carlo or not(and I know its a not) Cuffy giving them the finger leaves Milan in a weaker position. Surely you dont want that over getting some vengence.

Apparently Leo will be coach next year. First oder of business, convince Gourcuff to return.

btw – I consider Carlo kinda spiteful, so he didnt get the players HE wanted and what did he do??

Did he make up for it by introducing the newer players at his disposal into the fold??

    Erm no!

He just stuck with what he knew and played favourites all season long!

K: I think your assessment of Gourcuff is a little harsh and more than a little biased. We all think the clubs we support are the best and that any person in their right mind would sell a family member to play for them… But it just isn’t so.

Perhaps Gourcuff is showing his mental strength by choosing a different path. Maybe Bordeaux isn’t as prestigious as Milan, but for him, it may be a better club to actually play for. That doesn’t make him weak or unable to handle pressure. It may, in fact, just make him loyal to a club and city that have embraced him as one of their own.

Milanisti – I’ve posted a couple of videos i took at the match yesterday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G8HEavnl8U the High Quality won’t work for a while (you know the way youtube processes fairly slowly) : I think if you look at the lap of honour you’ll see why most people in the curva would have been unaware of what was being shown to Maldini
