Maldini Monday

By: Gianfranco | January 12th, 2009

“It’s hard to choose a single favorite memory, but I suppose if I had to, it would have to be seeing our glorious captain hoist the 2007 Champions League Trophy in Athens. What a euphoric day, it was truly one of the most beautiful images I have ever seen. Of course it was a team victory, and a most wonderful one at that, but it is hard for me not to focus on the man that led them there. Whenever I imagine that moment, I think about all of the different qualities that make Paolo who he is: his incredible talent, his leadership, his charms, his intelligence, his immense respect for the game. But I think the quality that I admire the most is probably his most obvious: his class, in all of its different manifestations. Whether it is analyzing our technical problems with a keen eye and giving voice to the observations supporters like us often make, guiding his teammates during matches (especially our youngins), always treating everyone in his vicinity with the upmost respect, be they teammates, staff, refs, or opponents, or simply serving as a wonderful role model to all that see him, to me, Maldini has always encompassed everything that was beautiful about Milan and everything that was beautiful about football. The thought that he won’t be there next season is truly unimaginable at the moment, to be honest, and when he leaves, it will be a day that the whole of football will mourn. Forza Paolo per sempre!”

to be honest when maldini retires we will never see a player as loyal or classy ever again. hes one of a kind and the best defender ever along with franco baresi. hes been playing at milan for as long as ive been alive and it will be the end of an era when he retires. im not a milan fan but have huge amount of respect for them and im definitely going to try and get over there for his testimonial just so i can see the man in the red and black one last time

alex it is interesting you say that because Paolo didnt score goals, or win a WC, but as a defender he was absolutely world class, and on the club level he is in fact the single winningest player and he has won so much he also leads in second place finishes making it all the more amazing…

I would have to say that one of my favorite Maldini moments was the entire win in Japan 07′against Boca J. for the club world cup … I was in awe just watching Il Capitano!!!
and it was a great finish to a tremendous year for the Rossoneri. I have watched the game twice since then and am still amazed at what a world class player Maldini still is even this year at his age keeping up with the youngbucks!
    THE GREATEST… #3 … MALDINI
