Maldini Monday
By: Gianfranco | October 13th, 2008Maldini discussing his career courtesy of Channel 4…
Paolo Maldini looks back over his legendary career, the toughest opponent and what his thoughts will be during his final game.
“To be a great defender you need to be attentive and have the physical characteristics of a true athlete, because you will meet forwards who can overpower you and there you’ll need to play with intelligence,” he told Sky Italia.
“I think the absolute best opponent I ever faced was Diego Maradona, although in his first two years at Inter, Ronaldo was also phenomenal.
“I consider my career to be fun, as I cannot see football as work. If it was, I’d have already retired a few years ago.”
This will be Maldini’s final campaign, as he has already announced he will hang up his boots at the end of this season. What does he think his thoughts will be during that final match?
“That I have reached the end of a very long adventure that began when I was very young and ended, in football terms, at the incredible old age of 40.
“I will think of the great fortune I have had in achieving everything in my home town, with my club, having lifted the Champions League trophy like my father did before me and the fact my son is now playing in the Milan youth team.
“I’ll consider all that and think I have been a very lucky man.”
Despite all agreeing Maldini is one of the all-time greatest players, he has never won a trophy with Italy, or the Ballon d’Or.
“I missed out on a win with the Azzurri, but perhaps that wasn’t the time for us. We had many chances and always lost out on penalties,” said the holder of 126 caps.
“The strange thing is I became the captain of the Italy side before I was captain of Milan. I was happy to have more responsibility and was already close to 30, so I felt ready to take on the mantle of Franco Baresi.”
Maldini’s father Cesare went on to become a Coach of both Milan and Italy, but Paolo has already said he will not follow that path.
“There is a big question mark over my future. Those who were great players do not always become great directors.
“I am very open to any proposal and that includes a complete change of scenery. We’ll see what the future holds.”

its not that the ballon d’or hasnt been bestowed on Maldini; its that Maldini hasnt been bestowed on the ballon d’or.

The last chance for the Ballon d’Or was 2002. He and Roberto Carlos were unbelievable in that year but then Ronaldo upstaged everybody.

Maldini has had the pleasure of being the greatest defender in an era of truly great strikers, Ronaldo, Batigol, Crespo, Dinho, and midfielders like Zidane…the man shined in a era dominated by attackers, not an easy task. Had he played in a more defensive minded era one would have to believe he would have won the golden ball…you have all inspired for next week.

whats the state of play for Milan – Samp? who’s in who’s out?

Avia – Ancelotti is an young talent killer.
Ancelotti doesn’t bring up/nuture you talent here.
Gourcuff & Gila had to leave grow.Kaka wouldn’t have blossomed here if Rui Costa didn’t get injured and Kaka step in & play every day to show his talent & prove his worth.
I’m telling you i’ll be happy if we see those Uruguayans touch the pitch 4 times this season they’ll get little to NO time to prove their worth on the pitch. They’ll be loaned out to grow.
Pato should be able to overcome Ancelotti with his talent, plus our deficit striking last year gave him enough playing time to prove himself.
Ancelotti needs mature seasoned players, where as Wenger can coach young talent & nurture it to become really good/great.

Wow, watched the last 20 minutes of that friendly(2-1 loss for us, ron scored – set-up by Sheva), all I was looking for was Nesta glimpses. I am happy.

BD4M, I dont think Gila was exactly Ancelotti’s fault. Gila got a fair bit of game time compared to Gourcuff.
And I dont think Kaka made it simply ‘cos of Rui’s injury. That being said, ancelotti never has enough faith in the youngsters.
Avia, heres to hoping it does haunt him, lol

its not about faith, if there is quality to use, the quality will be used.
all accusations of carlo not using youth should be thrown out the window when you look at our very own little boy wonder, pato.
same goes for Maldini. what coach in their right mind would play a 40 year old? carlo does value experience above all else, but he isnt blind enough to not appreciate the value of youngsters either. even paloschi got his chance, and apparently hes tearing it up at parma.
i would rather an old timer get burned in one game and realize mistakes happen than a youngster who gets burned and loses confidence in himself because he doesnt have the mental capacity to control his emotions.
football is all about confidence, without confidence no player can achieve anything.

Patcook/BigDawg4Milan – Gila is “fully grown” imo. Carlo just couldnt seem to make him gel into the squad, there wasn’t anything really to develop (look at his work at Parma & Viola).
Kinda reminds me of myself if im honest. I play 5-a-side weekly and on my “off” matches its like im playn my own mini-game whilst the rest of the team is playn theirs.
Dont matter how good ur if ur only playn by yourself – alot of the time Gila looked completely lost, which is why sum of us criticised him, others defended him coz they knew he WAS good (which he is now showin). He wasn’t the type of striker a coach like Ancelotti could best make use of. Gila does remind me alot of Kluivert (Avia shivers!).
Cuffy – is a different story. He got less time than Gila true, but was more a victim of Carlos formational tactics. There just wasnt anyone that Carlo was willing to take off to play Cuffy. How many times can we remember at being totally bewildered at the timing of Cuffys coming on during a match??
It would have at least been nice to see Carlo give him a good run of games but sadly we know how it played out for the yung Frenchman last season.
Hopefully, Cuffys return (u bet im countn on it!) will be the felling of the xmas tree finally.
Now that Carlo is open to the idea of new formations I think Cuffy would have been sweet (which he is now showin!).

“Just think how much experience Emerson has that can be passed onto our younger players like Paolo Maldini and Giuseppe Favalli. He will be staying, and in fact I am thinking of offering him a new deal. He is an example to us all.”

Sorry for my absence, but this international break is making me
Shehan, your school of thought on confidence is great. But during games against say Cagliari, Reggina, or even Atalanta I can stomach mistakes from youngetrs and attribute it to growing pains, but I cant stomach mistakes from vets…
