Maldini Monday

By: Gianfranco | September 8th, 2008

Today I want to share an article from Channel 4, it is a interview exchange with Paolo. It just goes to show how eloquent and intelligent he can be. It also shows that despite his lack of desire to one day coach, his head is in the right place to fill the poorly filled shoes of Uncle Fester. I would Paolo as the Sporting Director of Milan any day of the week.

Paolo Maldini believes the defeat to Bologna was unlucky, but realises “Milan’s biggest problem is balancing all these attacking players.”

The Rossoneri unveiled new signings Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko on Sunday in a 2-1 home loss to recently promoted Bologna.

“Unfortunately we started where we left off last season,” sighed the captain. “I don’t think we deserved to lose, as we had the better of the play and just failed to convert our many chances.

“There is a structural difficulty when facing teams who come to San Siro and focus on the counter-attack. We were also unlucky.”

The challenge of putting so many attacking figures in a starting XI prompted Carlo Ancelotti to switch to a Roma-style 4-2-3-1 system in the second half, but this left them open to Bologna’s counters.

“Balance has to be found between players, systems and even the level of form on any given day. It’s not easy to play that many attacking players and I think that is the biggest problem for our Coach.

“It all depends on how the game develops. If you can take the lead, then it all changes and for a forward-thinking side like ours it leaves extra space to run into.”

The Rossoneri have changed a great deal over the summer, investing heavily in Ronaldinho, Shevchenko, Marco Borriello, Mathieu Flamini, Gianluca Zambrotta and the returning Christian Abbiati.

“Those who join this team must accept competition,” added Maldini. “This side has been at the top of its sport for 20 years now and a player has many advantages playing for Milan, but also this disadvantage of fighting for places.

“We now wait to have all our players back to full fitness and are training to be ready for Genoa, so we can take back those points we missed out on in Week 1.”

Just stopping in to check on my milan, before I have to go again. Did I mention that I love that man? He says what’s on his mind, but he says it in a way that’s not offensive…And I would pick him any day over Fester too.

That has always been a key piece of Maldini’s legacy. His ability to say things that did not offend yet convey his point. We can all take a point from that in day to day life as well…

I read his interview and thought the exact same thing Gian.

I also take heart in that the Captain knows we have issues in terms of tactics & formation so hopefully does everyone else involved!

I love the fact that he doesn’t try to delude himself either… or pull out the old PR standby “we’re gonna get back on track, Milan is the strongest in the world, no problems here!” that most players spout off.

Bonnie, I think the fact that his heart and soul is this club he cant even say BS like that because he really doesnt believe it, god knows there are times I didnt believe it when Carletto said it or Fester for that matter, and here is Paolo being quite matter of fact in the whole thing.

Just my own 2 cents- out of all the players in the world of footy, Maldini is the one I respect the most. Not only is he a class player, but he’s also a role model, which is a rarity in the sport these days. While other players spit, throw hissy fits, result to diving… Maldini has never sunk that low. He’s also got brains which is all too uncommon for many soccer players.

He’s a legend. It’s gonna be a sad day when he decides to retire, and not just for Italy, but for all of the soccer world
