Milan Legends: Sebastiano Rossi
By: Gianfranco | August 9th, 2008When I look at the current roster and I see Dida and Kalac, I can not help but reminisce to a day when one man stood between the pipes for 240 games in close to 10 seasons. He gave Sacchi and Cappello the comfort to never once stress over the decision of the number one jersey. The funny thing is unless you are a Milan fan, you have a very hard time remembering the man, and that man is Sebastiano Rossi.

What I remember best as a child was the towering stature of this man who even when he stood next to Il Capitano looked like a giant. But he was more than just a tall guy, he had hands that looked enormous and reflexes to match. When I began watching Milan the Rossi era as a starter had yet to begin but as Galli was faded out of net and Rossi was installed, you quickly began to realize why they turned the reins over to this man.
For all the success Rossi experienced in net for AC Milan, and all the trophies he got his hands on, he very rarely gets credit for the success that he experienced. The number one thing you hear time and time again when Rossi is discussed is that he was the most fortunate GK of all time because he played behind arguably one of the best defensive units ever assembled. Couple this flaw, with the fact that Rossi was competing for the Azzuri job with Zenga and Pagliuca, he was one of the most successful goalies to never don the national team strip.
Now if anyone has ever had to stand between the pipes in a soccer match, they will be quick to tell you that no matter how good the defense, heck even if it is as good as the Milan unit was, no defense will keep the other team from shooting for ninety minutes. With that being said Rossi had to be on his toes and prepared for everything, as well as be a back line general for a phenomenal squad. I bet there are very few Rossoneri legends that would not thank Rossi for everything he accomplished.
As if the trophies were not enough to convince us about Rossi’s worth, and there were a few. Rossi was also the man who tended goal during Milan’s 58 game unbeaten streak. He also holds the Serie A record for consecutive clean sheets at 11, which is even more impressive in a league that has hosted the likes of Zoff, Zenga, Pagliuca, Peruzzi, and Buffon.
Rossi never got a heroes send off, even though there are a fair amount of people who argue he would deserve it. But Rossi is not gone or forgotten. He is currently coaching GK’s in the Rossoneri youth system, and on the current Milan roster is the man who displaced this Milan legend, Abbiati.

If any GK is going to move this team forward should it not be the man who replaced a legend?

Dinho and Pato seemed to have found a bit of a rhythm today as well, hope that translates to the San Siro.

so, bs.com is again reporting news about kaka’s move and quoting his personal assistant as saying that the clubs are in talks….
really torn on this one now…Posted from

moka, moving the discussion here so that more people can participate…
what makes the rumours this time around (as in this transfer window around) seem true is because his assistant keeps making these quotes…which cant all be bull, right?
let’s look at it from both the club and the player perspective
club - if there was any way we could be sure that baldie and berlu would spend the money from his sale wisely and get us a couple of defenders and a striker and attacking mid and a goalie (all of which we could get in his price btw), then i say more power to us…let’s sell him and build the team for the future. On the flip side, there is no knowing what goes on in the heads of the 2 at the top and if the sale will just go to warm more politician’s pockets, then NO GODDAMNED WAY.
personal - he’s arguably one of the best in the world today and wants to keep playing at the highest level - with this team, he plays uefa cup this year and def does not qualify for champions league next year as well - why should he stay? however, why on earth should he move to chelsea? the club has a surfeit of players, he will def be in the starting line up at the beginning but at the first sign of a bad season, they are going to bench him - ref what happened to sheva. plus, the only team in the world who will cosset him regardless of injuries, bad games, age etc is milan
net net - makes sense for the club but not for him - sounds weird and opp to what most people would say but he would be a fool to movePosted from

kaka’ to chelsea is just another load of horseshit. they’re using recycled quotes from his ‘personal assistant’ from 3 weeks back and using it again today.
this is what happens when there is a lack of football in the summer….
kaka’ is going nowhere, and he will never be sold for money.
milan is loyal to the players. how would that look on the club’s image when just last summer kaka’ was resisting real merda’s overtures for even more money and then suddenly we sell him off for money this season? for fucks sake, we are not juventus, we are not barcelona.
WE ARE AC FUCKING MILAN. LOYALTY IS IN OUR BLOOD. this isnt a two-bit commercial sideshow. have some loyalty folks. i am a milan fan through the highs, and through the lows. kaka’ is the same. just because we didnt do well doesnt mean he will leave. show him a little more deserved respect than that. hes an elegant man with honorable values. and so is our club.
we will never sell kaka’ for money.

shehan, lets look at this slightly dispassionately. we all want milan to do well - with the team we have currently (even when we get all the guys back), we are not going to be able to even finish in the top 4 if we dont rectify our defensive, goalkeeping and striker (boriello has just one good season behind him) problems. midfield alone cannot win us the scudetto. given the fact that berlu and fester say we do not have the money to make any more investments, would it not make sense overall for the team’s benefit to sell kaka and use that money for reinforcements? kaka is my fave player as well but given the position we are in, what is the alternative?

but selling kaka’?
he said no to the riches of real merda last summer. and now, to balance our books we will sell him off this summer?
this club is not built on hypocritical values like that. selling kaka’ is not an option, and it never will be.
understood that we havent been fulfilling our potential with the team we have, but selling kaka’ is not the right thing to do.
yes, we’ll get so much money and we’ll buy so many more players. but we are not perpetual backstabbers like juventus or barcelona. we have some class, we have to honor our players like they honor our jersey.
and again, all of this so far is made from our preseason results. but how much can you take from preseason? dont expect any goals up front, we are missing 5 of our 6 attackers. our biggest mistake was vs. chelsea, but lets not forget that the team that reached the champions league final last season is a couple weeks ahead of us in terms of preparation. in a game of centimeters, the extra fitness goes a long way and all of us can vouch for that.
we can’t exaggerate the results and over-analyze. the only purpose of preseason is to get some mileage on the legs and thats about it. we never really had a penchant for rocking our summer friendlies.
but selling kaka’ would be the most hypocritical, back-stabbing action this club can do. and if they do, i will be shocked. i will be in tears, and supporting milan would be extremely difficult.
i used to pride my milan allegiance based on the fact that we are one of the most loyal clubs in the world. if kaka’ goes, all of that loyalty and class will go down the shits and milan will become just another commercialized footballing brandname that wants to make more money at the cost of losing its soul.
no way, that is not the milan i chose and choose to support.

“WE ARE AC FUCKING MILAN. LOYALTY IS IN OUR BLOOD.”
That screams to be made into a banner. Anyone up to the challenge? A to the men shehan.
The Ricky rumors are complete BS, I’m not the slightest bit worried. The alternatives Sam? The alternatives are that we offload the players that contribute crap, nada, zip, zilch, to get the defenders we need. Not one of our most key players that loves this shirt. The alternative is for Carlo to show some flexibility in his tactics.
It’s tough times being a Rossoneri right now since all the optimism of a few weeks to go seems to have gone right down the drain with all of these injuries and it’s hard to gauge where we are in terms of preparations with players missing/injured. This season is going to be far from easy. But I have faith. At full strength, we’ll be unstoppable. This too shall pass. We didn’t think anything was going to come out of the hellish start that was the 06-07 season, but look where we ended up. As icky as some of our losses have been, pre-season isn’t the best indicator of how a season will go.
On a brighter note…
Completely awesome news about Ducky and Dinho’s performance
Going to have to download the match.Posted from

we really dont need to sell kaka to make money… do you guys realize that by just gettin rid of dida we could save 4.5 million per season… the 9m that we are going to pay him could go and buy us a quality young defender and in all seriousness, thats what our main problem is right now…
the depth argument is only for defence because in midfield we really seem set and attack, had dinho and pato not been at the olympics, again the depth issue would not be that ridiculous… its just bad luck that borriello went down, dinho and pato are out and kaka is still recovering…. thats 4 players in attack that are unavailable atm… its a fluke of nature and does not mean that we dont have depth… hell if barca lost messi, eto’o, henry, and bojan they would be fucked too… if juve lost amauri, trez, del piero while giovinco was at the olympics, they would be in trouble too… we have 8 players for three spots atm… granted paloschi and viudez are probably not going to be on the first team soon… viudez with primavera and palo on loan but still 6 players for three spots… pato, dinho, kaka, borriello, seedorf, inzaghi…. first off, thats really the definition of quality depth… and then add paloschi to the mix and seriously, we have an excellent balance of youth and experience…
defence is our only problem and selling kaka aint gonna solve that issue… plus, kaka will make us a lot more money playing for milan over the years rather than by selling him right now… and as mentioned earlier, lets not forget that in a time of faceless and heartless clubs throwing money at merc players AC Milan stands strong by showing loyalty, tradition and class… we are not in the business of selling our legends…

Dida, Emerson, Favalli, Simic, Brocchi…how much money would they free up?
Posted from

So… you found someone who is willing to kill DIda?
The only way you are getting Dida off your books is to sell him or kill him. And you aren’t going to sell him, ’cause no one wants him at his salary.
So I would forget about this money you’ll save if he’s not there.

seriously guys - its easy to say we can make money getting rid of dida, favalli, simic, brochhi - but who’s buying them?

thanks, had to vent a bit about all the pessimism surrounding us… we have had a really good transfer season, and maybe i am just eternally optimistic, but our team is good enough to win the scudetto… our only problem is depth in defence and looks like there is a chance that the depth issue is solved today…
http://www.milannews.it/index.php?action=read&idnotizia=2279
sam, we arent making money by selling them… we are saving the money we would pay in salary by releasing them… we have to release dida, sadly i know this will not be the case…
i really think that gourcuff is going to absolutely tear it up at bourdeux and tbh, i think that we could bring him back here, and play him along side flamini and he may not be as deep as pirlo, but it could work like how cesc and flamini worked for arsenal…

K, dont put to much stock in success in France. The league is much different than Serie A. I will say however that many french players have found their feet in Italy, but it is a matter of size, build, and skill. Not just skill. I beleive if Benzema went to Arsenal or Italy, he would not have the type of success he had their.
