Milan Legends: Mauro Tassotti

By: Gianfranco | August 16th, 2008

The forgotten man of the Milan defense was in fact as superb as the rest of his defensive fraternity. We have talked about Franco, Billy, and Paolo, but how can we have forgotten Mauro. Well I haven’t.

The Rossoneri’s fifth most capped player (583 all around appearances) of all time was vice captain to Franco Baresi, and if not for the number six’s huge shadow and persona, Tassotti could have easily become one of the Milan’s greatest defenders of all time. But how does a player compete with the likes of Baresi and Maldini? It isn’t easy, but Tassotti certainly gave it his best effort.

A key piece of the invincible four defensive unit that led Milan to the longest shutout in Serie A history, Tassotti not only played excellent defense but was also a very capable wing back who could fly up and down the right flank when needed. Mauro won three Champions League crowns with Milan and was able to hoist one himself as Captain in one of Milan’s most memorable wins in a European Final.

The most shocking thing for me as I remember and researched Tassotti was that he was very much overlooked because of the stiff competition he faced as a defender not only at Milan, but across Italy with the likes of Benarrivo, Apollonni, and the players before them playing at an extremely high level at the same time as Tassotti. He was not capped as a member of the Azzurri until he turned 32 which is even more of feat because he was able to play at the highest level until he retired a member of AC Milan in 1997 at the not so tender age of 37 years old. The trend of high quality aging defenders has been around at Milan for a long time, and the legacy continues.

Tassotti retired with very little fanfare, possibly because he started his career at Lazio and unlike those honored before him was not a Rossoneri for life. However, my father said something funny the other day when I asked him about Tassotti, he said that, “He did things quietly as a player and there was no reason for him to retire any differently,” You do not have to look to far for Tassotti now a days, as he sits along side Carletto week in and week out as Milan’s assistant coach and it is widely thought that he would replace Carletto in a pinch should something happen to the Milan mister.

3 Champions League trophies as a player, 2 as a coach, member of the invincibles, and one of the most humble and modest Milan Legends to date, more trophies than most clubs makes him a special piece of Milan for years to come.

I’m so happy with our performance, and you don’t hear me say that too often lately. Yeah, we won 4-1, but what is more important than the score line is the fact that we played some excellent football. We attacked as a unit, we defended as a unit, we kept possession well, and we even had Pippo play making. Seedorf had an excellent game, making two assists. I was also impressed by Janku, Bonera, and Zambro in the back (especially Janku). This is what I’ve wanted to see, don’t care if Kaka is out injured, Pato, and Dinho are absent; we should play like today at all times. And Abbaiti should definitely be our 1st choice keeper. I know it is just a friendly, but we sure played like Milan today, with more soul and grit.

Nina I second your opinion, a lot of things seemed to be working today and the team showed heart. Good to have Pippo back too, and Pirlol and Ambro looked like they wanted to play. Determination like this is what makes me excited for the season.

Fucking A, the common sentiment on another Juve forum I moderate is we never should have played this game, not because we got our asses hammered but because with all these summer friendlies we pick up all these injuries. Zanetti, Marchionni, Nedved, and now Giorgio all injured in preseason friendlies. If Chiellini is out for 3-6 months, goodbye Scudetto hopes.

Ro i do not appreciate that either, but I hope there was a reason for it. Even CRon was present at Old Trafford today, friendly or game it is important that a player is present for the team…hope something is going on behind the scenes.

Alessio, it sucks for Giorgio, and you hate to see that happen. First glance it looks to be OK, but we will have to find out for sure on Monday.

i hope we can maintain the same performance on the 21st against Juve & Napoli. it will be an important task and we’ll probably go to sleep more assured if we play as good.

and we still need another defender.

That made me distressed Gian…I’m worried now that those rumors are true…and with Digao gone (on loan) Gosh this transfer season is going to kill me…I swear it is.

If Kaka does leave…the only way I will be happy is if they go on a huge spending spree and spend that money every last penny…but knowing Fester and Co. they will say the team is fine and pocket the money “for next year”

im not worried even one bit. Kaka will stay for sure, dont worry. next season is another issue, we have 1 year until we have to worry about it.

maybe little Luca needed his diapers to be changed and Kaka got busy with that.

wow - wish we could see the same spirit from our team every game! ambro, janku and seedorf were really fired up…even tho palo didnt score, i still like the guy more than pato (gasp gasp!)
chiellini news really sucks esp since the first qualifier is right around the corner….its like there is a defense curse on milan and the azzurri!

That is what I love about Ambro too, don’t care what anyone says about his performance with the Azzurri. He is one player that you know will always give his all and even some more. He battles for every ball and is everywhere in the field. Even if we are down 2-0, you can always count on Ambro and his never dying fighting spirit. It is sad that his efforts go unnoticed sometimes.
