Milan Legends: Demetrio Albertini

By: Gianfranco | July 19th, 2008

We talked about Baresi, who holds a very special place for me in Milan lore. But this man, after Maldini, was my favorite player to ever wear the Milan jersey. I wanted so much to play like Albertini and spent hours attempting to swerve free kicks and shots into any net or wall I had available. I spent hours holding the ball and looking for an imaginary pass to the wing hoping that Donadoni, Savicevic, or Boban would receive the pass in my backyard…

We know all the accolades, trophies, and victories he has tasted but for this legends post I don’t want to focus on that. Albertini meant more to me than just those accolades. For me Albertini is extra special because he was playing a style that only now in this modern era of football gets real PR for what he did and what he was capable of.

It is hard to call a player like Pirlo a modern day Albertini because these guys for me are different. They are once in a lifetime type players, one off in each generation of footballers who do things just a bit different than everybody else. For Albertini the era of midfielders was chock full of wingers and central midfielders who loved to be on the ball and attack their way up the pitch, but that wasn’t Demetrio. Demetrio did it his way, working and winning the ball around the center circle and either spraying the ball to the wings or carrying it to around 30 meters from goal and blasted long range shots on that made even the best goalies cringe.

Beckham, CRon, and all the other great strikers of the dead ball, need not look very far for one of the most underrated players I have ever watched. But another thing that Albertini did, that is a far cry from the players of this era, or even then, was he did everything with humility and a smile. He could have easily whined his way out of Milan when he was no longer in the winning eleven, but instead he left the squad on good graces and ultimately ended his career playing for another legendary club in Barcelona.

His humility was recognized and remembered by Milan, and he was honored much like the heroes before him in the video below, and though he may never go down as one of Milan’s all time greatest players he will in fact always remain a player that a child, much like myself, would do well to emulate and aspire to be like because of the way he went about his business. He may have never won the golden ball, golden boot, or even the player of value in tournaments and so on, but his contribution can’t be denied or forgotten.

My favorite Albertini goals would have to be the equalizer he scored for the Azzurri against Croatia, euro 96 qualifiers. I remember that goal particularly because we were a man down, the tension was high and deme saved the day. And of course the two goals he scored against Barca in the CL especially the first one he scored right after Rivaldo’s goal. I know no one asked me, but I thought I’d share that anyways.

Gian, no Juve player official or bought ref admit to losing two scudetti. :)

In fact, I have heard that if/when Juve win another they will put another star on the shirt.

i completely blame my parents, they should’ve made me the next Maldini =D and thats why they’re the ones giving me money, if they made me a pro-athlete they’d be in a yacht drinking from a coconut.

Torna a Casa Christian!! *Channel 4

Roma’s veteran defender Christian Panucci could be lured to Milan, according to rumours in the peninsula.

The 35-year-old is currently at Trigoria with the rest of the Roma players who began their pre-season training earlier this morning.

However, according to Il Messaggero, he could leave his teammates to return to Milan, where he plied his trade between 1993 and 1996.

The paper suggests that the Rossoneri have a two-year deal waiting for the Azzurri star and that Vice-President Adriano Galliani has made contact with his Giallorossi counterparts to discuss a possible transfer.

Panucci’s current contract at the Stadio Olimpico expires at the end of June 2009, which would leave him without a deal at the age of 36.

A switch to Milan would provide Panucci with the security of an extra year’s earnings and would ensure that he could close his career at the highest level.

Panucci would add depth, and experience to help bring along some of the youngsters Darmina and Antonini, and even Digao, eww Digao. By the way if Kaka does go to Chelsea Digao should have to go with him.

Panucci was supposed to be the heir to Maldini along with Coco. He is a great defender and has a way to much class for Roma. He left Milan with Cappello, and like Cappello has never returned, but I would be for it if he did.

The one thing Milan *don’t* need at moment is more experience. Why give a 35yo a two year contract when you could find another young player to add to the roster?

NO WAY GF…this is prob the one (and maybe the only so far!) thing that i cannot agree with you on…we need to buy a young CB who we can use over the next decade or so and why do we need panucci to groom when we have maldini and nesta?

Definitely one of the most underrated midfielders. I still wear the number 4 on any of my jerseys when I play. Orlando’s substitution to make way for Albertini’s debut still plays in my head.

I thought the 1st video was the Milan-Barcelona game in the CL 2000-01? It ended 3-3, no? Albertini scored two goals? Or I must have been hallucinating…
