Milan Legends: “Billy” Costacurta
By: Gianfranco | August 2nd, 2008When I started these legend posts I really didn’t anticipate the appreciation for them, and the comments and emails to keep them going. I am going to do my best to use the weekend for legend posts at least during the off-season. As always I want to hear who we should honor next.
The next player to be showcased is not going to rank in the elite players in the history of the game, or even the top defenders, but I will say it is extremely difficult to not rank Alessandro “Billy” Costacurta in the top five Milan defenders of all time, and cement him in his place in Milan folklore. We all know the honors, trophies, and achievements that Billy was able to achieve, but sometimes a player goes beyond those accolades and achieves things with the whole of the team that far outweigh any singular accomplishments, and Costacurta was no exception.
I am not going to sit here and list his honors and achievements, because by know we all know the great teams he was a part of. Most of even know that he played right back for and center right back for some of the most legendary defenses in the history game, but for me Billy goes beyond that. It was 2003 and I was sitting with a friend of mine in college to watch Milan – Juventus for the CL final. As I began describe the Rossoneri to my friend I paused and admired Billy for all that he had accomplished at this age and that even at 37 years old he was playing in a Champions League Final. Maldini is well renowned for his ability to defy the aging process but Costacurta was no slouch himself. Making 458 appearances for Milan and retiring at 41 years old.
What I find even more impressive is that this man was replaced by a legend in his own right, Cafu, and it is only fitting that a player with such a history be replaced by another player with his own legacy. Billy has done it all in the Rossoneri and he did it all in manner that exuded professionalism and character during his whole career. Sure he wasn’t the flashiest player or most dazzling, but when the game counting there was not a more precise defender who did things effortlessly in cooperation with his legendary backline mates.
Billy has recently passed his coaching exams and is assisting the Milan system this season after turning down the coaching job for Pisa. Part of me is glad he did, because like the legends before I would gladly welcome him to roam the sidelines of the Rossoneri when he was ready to take the helm. As you can see, Costacurta went way beyond the 5 CL trophies, seven scudetti, and countless appearances. He was a player, who like the rest of the defense not only represented Milan but transcended into the stuff of legends.
Now if someone can just tell me where the nickname Billy came from?

Milan signed 20 year old Brazilian keeper Felipe Garcia from Santos. he may be loaned out. but its good to see us having a young good prospect for the future.

nothing different to say except what i’ve been saying since the transfer window opened…we need defenders and a goalie…the whole world went berserk when we signed dinhio and it felt like the we’d just won everything under the sun but the way we are right now even when pato and dinhio are back, this is going to be worse that last season…all our defenders just got a year older, for chrissakes…how can we expect better performances from them than we got last year…i know i’m the exact opposite of fet in the optimism scale but this seriously feels like doomsday with no hope of salvation since galliani keeps feeding us shit about using ambro in the back and we actually use him as a striker in a game…

So now you guys have TWO keepers your not going to play? Has Dida even seen any preseason time at all?
And Pato and Ronadinho, they have 1 week to train with the squad before opening day?
Yikes.

johonna, dida will start next game against man city. the new keeper will probably get loaned, maybe even stay in Brazil. i see this move is very smart for the future.
honestly im worried so much about one thing. the derby is on week 5. somehow we need to get everything together by then. of course we have to from the beginning but that game we need to win!

The Arsenal gamed confirmed for the whole world that Milan will be overrun by younger teams. That is, confirmed for everyone except Milan themselves.
Gianfranco mentioned that they wanted to sign Ivanovic from Chelsea. They really need to find a good centre half soon. But what they really needed to do was an overhall of the whole squad.
Why on earth would they sign players like Favalli on anything more than year long contracts? I have said something before which is sacrilegious to most people around here, that the rebuilding should have started with the retirement of Maldini. This is not meant as an affront to the great man, but they needed that symbolic event to be a catalyst for further changes. With Maldini still around, it is a case of the ’same old, same old’ and ‘family’ attitude which has been taken too far.

A, i did mention mid season last time that maybe Maldini should call it a day (gasp, shock, horror!)
But to be honest, Maldini still has something to give where as guys like (big intake of breath) Favalli, Simic, Emerson (and to a lesser extent) Brocchi are pretty much dead wood and have nothing left to offer a team like Milan.
In the Arsenal game, where i did expect Maldini to come off second best, he genuinely showed class and showed that you simply cant buy that kind of experience, the fact that he took a pay cut to stay on says it all.
Class, Dida take note!

I would easily take Billy over Simic, Favalli, Janks anyday!

age is one factor and the other is also ability….are oddo, bonera and kaladzhe really the best that we can get around?

A I personally believe that even will act less like a catalyst and more like a downturn. When Baresi left we still had Paolo, and Alessandro to bull nose the back. When Paolo leaves we have absolutely no heir to the the throne…

maybe players like this ought to be considered…

Avia I am all for Stendardo and we have had much success with former Laziale in Nesta and Oddo. I like versatility and for me both he and Papa Waigo are key. Milan needs to be more savy, it is OK to ask for players in lieu of money, for example letting Gila go to the Viola for 12M was a mistake, we can take 8-10 and squeeze out a player makes the move all more palatble because we know the money will be spent poorly!

U forgot Stam in that roll call dude!
Good luck to the Viola with using Gila as far as im concerned. The only exchange with the Viola that we should have entertained was a deal involving Gila & Frey and my gut feeling says that it was probably raised (heres hoping!) but knocked back.
But def. Milan needs to be more Savy, i feel that we arent as sharp or cut throat in the market as we used to be, its kinda sad.
As ive mentioned before, and likely to mention daily from here on out, im will be at the Man City/Milan match this coming Saturday.
If the rumours are true then Dida will be playing, feel bad to say this, but sorely tempted to heckle him!

In fact, the way we are playing, i’ll probably fit in better sitting with the Man City fans lol!

avia – you will earn the undying gratitude of every single milan fan if you can heckle him enough to want to leave!

Avia, I think Gobi or even the CB whose name elludes me a this point and time could have been legit players to get in return with some cash for Gila.

Ancelotti said it best in his interview…”even if Nesta was there it wouldn’t solve all our problems”
I’m happy this happend now, as it shows how weak our defence is and still gives managment time to fix it. (or try to convince themselves and us that it’s world class)
To people who say its only this is ONLY pre-season don’t worry. IMO pre-season is not 2 get blown out 5 – 0.
Our team seems to be the one that always plays like $#!T in the pre-season and then gets off to a horrible start to the season?
You think theres a connection???
The funny thing about it many people come to accepting Galiani’s new cute and interesting reasons to justify the pre-season losing.
We havent had a good pre-season in years…history shows that our team doesn’t flip the switch come regular season and start to domninate the Serie “A” when we’ve had a bad pre-season.
Zapata or another quality CB is a MUST!
(I think we do need a keeper but Abbiati has to be given his chance)

lol @ Sam!
I will scream myself hoarse if i think there is a chance i can make him leave!
Gian, i even think that Zambro is abit of a stop gap signing. Fester needs to show that the team is building for the future.
Some of our players lack the passion for the club they play for and it shows on the pitch.
Played badly last season? So what! Just keep playing like you did! Just remember to keep picking up your pay checks!
Yeah, thanks Bonera, Favalli, Janks ect.
BigDawg – Tru about the pre-season! Carlo needs to pull his finger out anf shore up our backline. Abbiati looks like he can handle himself between the sticks tho imo.
