Saturday Morning Hangover

By: Gianfranco | November 8th, 2008

Another busy day means another pilfered preview, but you guys are great when it comes to discussion so we should be fine. Many thanks to Channel 4

New Serie A leaders Milan are planning to add one more win to their four victories in a row as they take on draw-addicted Lecce. The Rossoneri will be strong favourites to collect the three points, but history shows that nothing can be taken for granted – especially at the Via Del Mare.

The San Siro giants are approaching the peak of their form, playing good football at times and returning to the top of the table for the first time in four years after a narrow victory over Napoli on Sunday.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti will use Thursday’s UEFA Cup game against Sporting Braga to test the condition of a few players. As a result, Philippe Senderos and Kakha Kaladze should be in contention to win a place in the starting XI at the weekend.

Upfront, former Genoa striker Marco Borriello seems to have won the battle with young gun Alexandre Pato and old fox Pippo Inzaghi. The Italian will be supported by the Brazilian duo of Kaka and Ronaldinho. Playmaker Andrea Pirlo is still out, which should see Massimo Ambrosini again start.

Lecce Coach Mario Beretta is still struggling to find the perfect design for his team, but proclaimed himself happy with his side’s performance in the draw with Atalanta. Playmaker Andrea Ardito and star man Simone Tiribocchi have minor problems, but there is no doubt they will start.

Guillermo Giacomazzi is back from suspension, but Brazilian full-back Angelo is still out. Vitorino Antunes will keep his place on the left. Former Pisa striker Jose Castillo is likely to be the first choice to partner Tiribocchi, while Daniele Cacia, still in poor form, will probably start from the bench.

Keep an eye on: Simone Tiribocchi (Lecce) – Up against Samba stars Ronaldihno and Kaka, the former Torino striker will be looking to steal the headlines against the Serie A leaders.

Last season: Not played

the players called up are different than the 7 players allowed on the bench during the game. we’ve called up 20 players for tomorrow, but only 18 will be on the match list.

i agree david, 2 strikers is the best way to go. but i don’t think it will ever happen with ronaldinho fit. but i do think ronaldinho and kaka’ have the potential to form and even more lethal partnership than which they already have. kaka’s runs into space are always utilized by ronaldinho’s pass, and it makes for some wonderful interplay between the two.

i also wanna see inzaghi get a start with ronaldinho behind him, although we sucked it up vs. bologna, inzaghi’s off the ball movement and ronaldinho’s ability to pick a pass will hurt any defense.

I’d like to see Ronnie start against Lecce. The man is winning games for the team while at 50% of his best; he needs to play as much as possible to get back into real shape. Is AC so weak defensively that Ronnie can’t be on the field at the beginning of this game?

Shehan, I am with you on Kaka and Dinho it is almost like a hyrbid line of three strikers, the xmas tree with Seedorf and Kaka behind a striker may as well be considered obsolete when you have the option of playing these two guys behind Borriello.

    good point gian.

i think this is what makes kaka’ such a great player. hes given the freedom to pop up anywhere and everywhere, and he always exploits ‘anywhere and everywhere’ (i’m sure he learned something from shevchenko in his prime, because this was one of sheva’s greatest assets if i remember correctly). and the best part is thats hes a really fit player, so even after 89 mins he’ll still be running at defenders.

kaka’ is a rare breed of footballer who has the intelligence to play without any restrictions, and i think we will slowly but surely see this rubbing off on ronaldinho. and once ronaldinho gains this expertise, we’ll be seeing some absolutely fantastic football.

its only a matter of time before the groundhogging caused by kaka’ and ronaldinho becomes a turd. i couldn’t put it in any other way, sorry for the visual…

yah the new improved xmas tree isnt as bad as the old one, although im still skeptic and id rather play with 2 strikers. but i trust carletto.

i loved it when he said milan has started a new era. “It’s been seven years since I arrived on the Milan bench, the first seven years have now been closed, tonight’s match was the first game of the next seven years.” powerful carlo and here’s to the next 7 years, cheers.

milan 2-0 lecce. kaka and borriello.

    ro, carlo answering your question

““Senderos has not recovered completely yet, but he’s fine. Ambrosini has a problem to his calf, Maldini will return next week. Same thing for Ambrosini and Senderos.”

i have a feeling we’ll get only one, im placing a bet for milan to win with a 1-0 handicap (meaning they must have a 2 goal deficit) but im not so sure especially with the xmas tree and defense.

Cicinho just scored a beauty for the wrong team!! Bologna showing the same scrappy toughness that helped them beat the Rossoneri.

i’m enjoying ronaldinho and all, but didn’t barcelona offer us eto’o for less than ronaldinho?

maybe we should’ve taken that offer…

It’s amazing how Messi and Eto’o now work so well together, almost like Leo once did with Ronnie. This speaks well of Messi I think..

…the other thing that comes to mind when watching messi absolutely tear it up game after game is how well he has come back from his injury last year in comparison with ronnie. who is still struggling to regain form and at 28 probably never will be what he once was. but, you gotta play with the cards you have.

good to see carlo rotating players and formations, as long as he doesn’t end up doing it as often as Rafa Benitez.

    We should cream Lecce

I gotta question for you all, Stan Collymore said on Setanta’s football show during the week that if you want to win a league youve got to have quality up the middle, ie. Quality main striker, quality main central midfielder, Quality main central defender and quality GK.

I was wondering, based on this equation, how does everyone rate the top clubs, lets say Milan, Inter, Juve, Roma, Fiorentina and Napoli. Im going to do my own write up of this on my own blog but was interested to hear what you all thought.

    Shehan WITH YOU 100%.

Pat, to answer your question, the spine of the team is extremely important but in italy it seems to be a bit less so that in the EPL. However the clubs you mention have it in one shape or another with quality staggered throughout the positions.

I want to buy some jerseys from that site (footballshirt.co.uk), but the only problem is their sizes are limited. I need a SMALL and they only have a medium.

Anybody know any other good sites for cheap and GOOD quality jerseys?

Moka the sizes seem to run small, I bought XL’s and they are just right, I typically wear a large and some shirts even a medium….

Mele, Friday nights leave me down and out, hence the title.
