Saturday Morning Hangover
By: Gianfranco | September 20th, 2008Getting the win Thursday was a big deal. Granted FC Zurich are not a European powerhouse and would probably lose to most of the midtable Serie A teams, but a win is a confidence builder and scoring goals proves that this team still knows how to find the back of the net. What was more important from this win was the fact that Carletto diverted from the XMAS tree formation, we all know and “love”, fielded two strikers, and managed to win handsomely. Will Carletto learn from this success? Past history tells us well, No!
With first place Lazio coming to the San Siro for a Sunday afternoon showdown, it is important that Carletto builds on successful performances from Thursday’s game and builds a squad capable of handling a Lazio team that I find far less of a surprise than most Serie A aficionados. Even in the Calciopoli season where they were deducted points they proved to be a team very capable of getting wins up and down the Serie A table, and after a tough season last year seem poised to continue being a legitimate squad.
On a side not, with Lazio regaining form and teams like Napoli and Sampadoria continuing to play well, this season’s Serie A campaign is shaping up to be one of the most exciting, competitive, and just plain fun to watch season’s I can remember in a long long time. Sure it is only week 3 but by the time Friday night rolls around I can not even wait for the first game on Saturday! Being a fan of football, the Serie A is making a claim for being a must-see every weekend. OK enough advertising.
Milan are 38-9 against Lazio at the San Siro with 18 draws, and though the San Siro has not been as friendly in the past two seasons as it has been in the past, Milan will need to start taking points at home if they want any chance of winning the Scudetto this season. Taking no points in any matches this season, it is imperative that they go on a streak of points, preferably the 3 at a time kind.
Lazio will not lay down though, playing well and getting a big boost from the “Zarate Kid” who has three goals on the season and his blend of pace and touch will certainly prove problematic for Milan’s aging defense. Carletto will do well to blend some youth on the squad to help bottle up Lazio’s pacy attack.
There have been many iterations of a potential lineup discussed over the course of the week: 4-3-2-1, 4-2-2-2, & 4-4-2. The bottom line to success after the failures of the past two weeks, the squad will need to be capable of offensive bite and possession. If it was up to me, and possibly many of you, the defense should feature Antonini and Zambro on the flanks who proved capable of pace, with Antonini having a great game mid week, while Maldini should partner with Senderos despite Il Capitano’s lack of form recently. The CB spot is weak and it is best that Carletto employs a veteran with a youngster back there, whatever the combo may be. Playing Bonera and Senderos, or Darmian and Bonera may prove a bit “green’ against a team like Lazio.
The midfield poses an issue as well, but the return of Rino may allow Carletto to play Gattuso in front of the defensive line and push a line of three midfielders ahead featuring Flamini, Kaka, and possibly Ronaldinho. With Flamini having a responsibility to dominate the center of the pitch allowing Dinho and Kaka to dominate the flanks while still making us strong in defense. Dinho and Kaka will need to be extremely mobile through the center as well in an effort to force Lazio’s midfield to cover and open space for the striker partnership.
Up front Borriello is a must start, but his partner can be either Sheva or Pato with the other waiting in the wings for a run on. Borriello has showed his desire, ability, and confidence. Carletto should be rewarded as the season wears on if he trusts Marco. This formation also gives Carletto a lot of flexibility with substitutions, allowing for the inclusion of Ambro, Seedorf, or Pato depending on the circumstances. Ideally you can bring in Ambro or Seedorf with a lead to help in possession or Pato if Milan is chasing the game, which I really hope is not an issue
I instead hope that we see images like these, FORZA MILAN!

fg, we dont have that type of forward, we have only mobile forwards and no real target man however I believe in what Carletto is saying.
Moka your diagram is sweet, plain and simple, I would flip Dinho and Kaka though but you have captured exactly my point. Rino and Flamini make up the spine and the flanks will work accordingly with shape and spacing being very very important.

I think we have all captured Sam’s intital 4-2-2-2 in some way or another, I do believe that width will need to come from the likes of Dinho and Kaka to cover what Sam is saying on Zambro. Milan have been a club historically dependent on wingbacks but the personnel no longer allows for marauding runds from deep, Antonini is certainly speedy enough, but defense may need to come first with the personnel Milan has in the attack.

i have a feeling Milan will score 4 goals. but my other feeling say 4-3. either 4-1 or 4-3.
according to Gazzetta will Milan will play 4-4-2. in the midfield Seedorf, Ambro, Flamini & Gattuso. upfront Borriello and Kaka. i think its better if Dinho plays there in the midfield. because if we go with the one suggested i fear we wont be attacking that much with the defensive midfield selection. leave in Seedorf on the left (he’ll rotate with Dinho on the right). Zambro behind Dinho on the right. so the flanks are both running up (Zambro, Dinho & Janko, Seedorf) with Kaka playing as a second striker behind Borriello and moving all over from left to right confusing the defense and dinho & seedorf making sure the ball goes to ricky or borriello. and if that doesnt work and god forbid we’re losing or struggling. then get pato/sheva in and (ambro or rino or flam) out. i really hope carlo goes with that, if not im sure he’ll do whats best for us. it was great for the fans to chant during zurich game “Anceltto uno di” (one of us)
Janko will be playing according to gazzetta that is. and bonera alongside Maldini. Senderos still injured, will probably miss the Reggina game. Pippo will back in about 10 days *cough* inter

lol moka ive been drawing formations like that during my classes lately. with the circles and different options, defense, offense… its really entertaining and a good time killer while the old prof is mumbling about economy and useless stuff, little do they know its all about milan
they should have courses about milan, that would be sweet. history, current team, business wise, sport wise, cultural and so on lol.Posted from

I just hope that our players don’t sit and wait for things to happen; I hate it when they do that. When the other team has possession, is like our players think it is half time break and they don’t have to make the least bit of effort. And as the match progresses, the other team grow in confidence and we let them walk all over us.For once, i hope we got out there and fight.

playing a 4-4-2 with kaka’ and ronaldinho on the sides would be disastrous like brazil circa 2006.
the whole idea is to find balance between attack and defense. yes, the 4-4-2 with kaka’ and dinho on the sides sounds brilliant offensively. but what about in defense?? are we seriously going to have kaka’ and dinho supporting the fullbacks when defending? you cannot say the central midfielders will help the fullbacks, that will expose the middle.
the biggest problem with the 4-4-2 lineup everybody is suggesting is the polarity between the attackers and defenders. seedorf and pirlo are key because they are good at attacking and defending. they are vital in transitions, both when we recover the ball and when we lose the ball.
it would be suicidal to play kaka’ and dinho with 2 strikers, it is too risky and that formation would be perfect in fifa 09, but not in the serie A.
the whole idea is to find a balance, we’ve had a good balance of 3 midfielders with 3 attackers for nearly 5 years. its a good system, simplistically perfect. its just a matter of tweaking the strategy in between that makes or breaks our game. carlo will only field 3 attackers tomorrow, and if seedorf plays he will sit deep and link everything together.
tomorrow’s lineup will be an indicator on our key starting XI tomorrow, it will be very interesting to see whats going on inside carlo’s head as he prepares for our comeback to the the top of the table, hopefully…

Bravo, good write up Gian!
Glad you gave a nod to the resurgence of the teams you mentioned as its def feels like Serie A is going to be good to watch this season!
At this point in time i find it as hard to argue with the suggestions you made for possbile formations as would Carlo (if he’s reading!).
I think this blog has a far better depth of ideas on how to use the squad than the staff at Milanello, really we should fax Moka’s diagram to them, anyone know the number? (Fet -am looking at you)
Teams can sense a weakness in our backline that gives them more incentive to go for the kill. Look at last weekend, you got to admit Genoa really wanted!
Watever formation Carlo goes for i hope he gives us a solid backline, i didnt see Antonini play in Zurich but by all accounts it sounds like he is def a serious candidate for a regular slot and Carlo needs to reward Borriello!
I really believe that as long as the squad goes out with a really positive mental attitude and a coach prepared to roll the dice if it isnt going our way then we should be at least be strong going into the match.
I’m hoping to see a team with passion in their movement, God knows, its not beyond us!
Shehan - Lol @ “fifa 09″
Def would be good to know whats going on inside Carlos head!

Love your point about the quality of Serie A this year, Gian! Competition is so much more interesting than a steam-roll. And if Milan somehow pull off the title, no one will be able to say we didn’t earn it. (Ya, I’m stubbornly going to stay optimistic.)
I’d like to see the Pato/Borriello combo given a good run. I think Sheva’s shown a good attitude up to this point and he should be given a good run as a sub, but I really want this partnership to click, build for the future.

tomorrow’s lineup is certainly a toss-up.
im shitting my pants just thinking about the possibilities carlo will bust out.
our 3 fit strikers seem to be in form, and so do our 3 attacking mids. but theres only 3 spots for 6 people. its going down to the wire…

Of course not Nina. How many Puma’s do we have?
I have so much work to do tomorrow. I really hope the game is worth watching. Pre-Bologna, we and the players were optimistic, especially with Kaka’s return. Now, the optimism is still there as well as confidence, and awareness of complacency. At this point, things are pointing towards a win, buuuut you never know with Milan.
I don’t want to waste another 2 hours. Please Milan, make me proud!!

Man, the more I think about the team, the more I realize the depth in the team is on one side only, the offense.
The defense is still extremely unconvincing, and I can’t help but predict they will concede tomorrow. Thiago Silva’s contract expires in December. I really hope we snap him up.
