Roma 2 Milan 1, The Slide Continues
By: Gianfranco | March 15th, 2008A game like the one today weighs extra heavy on me because it almost feels like a waste when it is all said it done. It is very important to quite frankly come out at say that Roma did by no means dominate the game today. Today was a pure example of coach past his time with a squad, and being outfoxed by a coach who is really on the rise and on the top of his game.
I would like to first and foremost say, as I have the past three matches, that Il Capitano looks like a man possessed, and the last Vucinic goal really was no fault of his own, but more a man tracking back to cover the rest of his defenses ass. I made a point of it in a past comment that as long as his performances continue at this rate, he can be the left back for my favorite team as long as he wants to, and Milan would be hard to replace his value any time soon. I do realize that it has to happen sometime but until then, let’s enjoy this last hurrah.
Clarence played out of him today and if Pato and Kaka gave half as much as he did Milan would have thrashed Roma the same way Man U did all that time ago. Kaka lacked the bite today and has lacked it for much of 2008. Pato continues to learn slowly but surely but I try to keep my expectations of him in check as he continues to interact with the squad and mature as a player.
Kaka’s dismal 08 form seems to have trickled to the likes of Rino and Pirlo who have also been a bit timid and lack the bite needed to finish teams off in the attacking third. A small bright spot today was the link between Pirlo, Oddo, and Kaka which was truly one of the best bang, bang goals I have seen in a long time.
Onto Carletto. I hate sounding like a broken record time and time again but he has limited resources on the bench. But when the coach makes substitutions like he is pulling names out of hat, it makes feel pretty poorly. I understand he wanted to use Emerson as a midfield anchor, but someone has to tell Carletto he was putting in 08 Emerson for the role of an 03 vintage Emerson, he just can’t do it anymore.
With Kaka going down with what looked to be a bothersome injury, and Carletto putting every able bodied forward onto the pitch (must like Spalletti) and not a single one of those strikers did anything to create a solid chance on goal. Too many workers and not enough leaders was the summary of the last ten minutes of the Rossoneri on the pitch.
I sit here shaking my head and wonder what is going to happen next. I do not even want to speculate, and barely want to see it unfold. Not to sound overly drastic but a fifth place finish would be devastating to the team, transfer budget, and morale.

The feeling is mutual Daniele, thanks. Roma played a hell of match. We had some bright spots, but didn’t take advantage of our lead. Don’t give up on the scudetto. They’re feeling the pressure, and there’s still 11 games to go to bridge the gap.

Big G, I agree with most of what you said, but I really do have to disagree with your statement about Roma. They kind of whooped us. Sure, we had a gorgeous Pirlo-Oddo-Kaka’ connection that led to the goal, had some bright spots on offense courtesy of Seedorf, but other than that…It was all Roma. DDR dispossessed our players more times than I can count, our midfield was sloppy. It’s hard because knowing that this was one of our better performances in recent times, just wasn’t enough.
I’m still glaring at Carletto for subbing in Emerson, even though I admit, I may have been a bit harsh on him yesterday. Okay, Seedorf may have asked for a sub, I didn’t catch it, but I believe you guys. But…Emerson? Why not change to a 4-3-1-2 and play Kaka’ behind Pato and another striker? We dominated play for a good while after the goal, just didn’t make the most of it. Putting a defensive mid when you’re only 1 up against Roma and 30 minutes to go…equalizing goal was inevitable.
And of course, this leads back to the fact that we don’t have depth in our bench. hell, broken record is right…

fiorentina win….i think we need to reconcile ourselves to 5th place and uefa cup now…
what is there left to say - we can all go on and on about who played well and who didnt but the truth of the matter is that we are evaluating the same 11-15 players every match unlike the other teams who are above us all of whom have the choice of upto at least 20 good quality players to draw from…
We have been reduced to criticising oddo in one match and then praising him in the next, doing the same with kaka, then with seedorf and so on…Posted from

quoting the ‘not so reliable’ goal.com but agree with them on this comment -
Totti 7 – Was given poor service but unlike Pato he didn’t let that stop him from making a top contribution. Dropping deep or going wide, he was involved in nearly all of Roma’s attacks despite not scoring.
dont want to keep taking off on pato all the time but he really needs a serious talking to on how to play as a team…Posted from

Hana “Putting a defensive mid when you’re only 1 up against Roma and 30 minutes to go…equalizing goal was inevitable”
Thank god! Someone else sees what i was trying to say yesterday.
We gave up trying to win once Carletto put Emerson on.
Damn u Carletto! Play Cuffy fuck!

Gianfranco, I hope Ranieri doesn’t leave Juve. If he does, well, Lippi is the only man I’d want back on the bench, and I’d still feel sorry for Ranieri. He’s come under too much criticism, he’s done very well, especially considering the BS penalties against us and I think he is a great coach. He’s proven he can build teams, at Valencia, Chelsea, and now at Juve, so maybe he’d be right for Milan. But I’m hoping he is our coach from 2008-2009.

To be honest I don’t even care anymore. It’s not even enjoyable to watch our games. There’s no magic in it for me anymore. See you all next season.

Gianfranco, Ranieri lacks the top class european experience imo.
I think we’d all agree that IF Carletto leaves at the end of this season, we can only expect a coach who will not only restore our domestic supremacy but push us back into the folds of the European elite.
Ranieri was, dont forget, heavily criticized for his constant tinkering with the squad, hence the nickname “The Tinkerman”!
But can his substitutions be any worse than Carlettos?? (After what i saw yesterday, i would say probs not!).

that game was very bad for our morals. i dont have much to say, just, i believe that we can finish in the top 4. we have to acknowledge we have a lot of problems in our team. not even so long ago, we had one of the best benches, now barely a decent starting line-up. oh well, anyways…..forza lotta, vincere, NON TI LACEREMO MAI!!

and tomorrow we’ll know the condition update of Kaka, Seedorf & Gourcuff.

he couldnt play gourcuff, because he wasnt even on the bench..
had he put in a striker and then we lost, everyone would have then jumped on his case for bringing on a striker when we were leading roma with 30 minutes to go… everyone would have cried for more midfield to choke roma’s midfield…
i personally think that this loss is the fault of our less than clinical finishing… and some pretty bad defending… especially on the first goal… 6 white shirts, 3 red shirts and still, we allowed two roma players to combine and also left guily wide open in the 6 yard box… 6 milan players in the box and only 3 roma players and yet guily is wide open in the box… that is just playground defending…

K, Carletto did put on a striker (2 in fact, Gila & Paloschi came on).
But like you said, it was down to crap finishing (i agree, so many matches recently where we just didnt bury our chances) AND what i refer to as “Keystone Cops” in defense.
Bring back Baresi!

Having that many strikers just highlighted the point, u had Gila (i think the debate is finally over on his crapness) Paloschi (still trying to establish himself) and Pato (who is gettin there) with Kaka & Pirlo playing on the same bloody pitch!
Once Seedorf came off Milan just turned to hoofing the ball up the park or Kaka running straight at/into Romans!

Avia, believe me I know about highs and lows. I am a born and raised Boston Red Sox fan, but this, this is a bit too much for me all at once. A season of shite. knocked out of the CL, playing like crap, not even in the top 4? Most of you, I’m sure, don’t know what it’s like to be a Red Sox fan, but this is rather similar.
It’s like when you meet a really special girl (or guy) and you click. You go out for a long time, things are going fantastic. Then you show up at their house with roses only to find your mortal enemy in life plowing your lover.Eventually you bounce back though, if you are one of the true, die-hard fans.

Mele, I know exactly how you feel…actually I’m 100% positive everyone here feels the same way you do. After matches like yesterday, all I want to do in the world is say “Eff this, I’m so over this crap” (In fact, those were my own words, just insert about 10 times more profanity in places you see fit).
But, like I said, being a hard-core die hard Rossoneri this season simply equates to being masochistic. Which we all are, because despite their terrible form, we adore them with a passion, and always will, and watch them week in, week out, watching, hoping. Even though our minds cringe and tell us other wise, our hearts override that.
….
If that wasn’t the cheesiest thing I’ve ever said, I’ll be damned, but it really is true, ain’t it?
MILAN PER SEMPRE.

Man, I honestly thought I wouldn’t feel that bad if Roma won, but I am absolutely gutted.
The second Seedorf was subbed off, I knew the game was gone for us. Ya, he missed a couple of sitters, but it’s his first game back in a while. He wasn’t the most match-fit player we had out there, but he seemed the hungriest. The look on his face after Roma scored broke my heart.
Random fact- I called the 2-1 score at halftime and named Giuly and Vucinic as the Roma scorers despite them not being on the field at the time. Everyone I watched the game with was a little freaked out, including myself.

BONNIE I DID THE EXACT SAME THING. Clearly, we have some ESP thing going on? Mind, you still got me by calling the score at halftime. I only called it once Seedorf was subbed. And I only got 1 for 2. “Oh man, we’re screwed…Giuly’s gonna kill that right flank and end up scoring.” Oh, le sigh.

We seriously must. And we picked random-ass players to score, that’s what’s more impressive!
Though I did think it was going to be the Duck that scored for us, not Kaka.

avia, i meant when we were leading with 30 minutes to go… carlo only brought on the strikers after roma scored twice..
like everyone else in here i feel like absolute crap after games like this… mele, too descriptive with the plowing your lover part… but yeah, thats pretty much how it goes…
but i would like to remind you guys, that we are still some of the luckiest fans in the world… we have won so much and this team has given us so much joy, asking for more makes me feel like a self-entitled punk ass bitch… there are fans of other teams that have gone generations without ever experiencing the joy of winning of even serie a, much less the cl… we on the other hand have won 2 champions leagues and a serie a in the past 5 years… thats more than most fans have experienced, if not all… think about it… the years of hell napoli fans have had to experience… roma hasnt ever even won the cl… inter for all their glory had to wait for the longest time to even get their paper scudettos…
i hate this feeling, but this is pretty much what makes the wins feel as good as they do…

Mele, I know I don’t know you or anything, and I mean this with all due respect, but dude, you’re a red sox fan, they have won the world series twice in the past 5 years. Milan won the Champions League and the Club World Cup within the last year, you’re gonna dump it after one shit season, one shit season that leaves you still with a developing player unfolding before your eyes every game like Pato? Not to mention a full squad of guys who can change a game. I’m sorry but as a Roma supporter I know dissapointment, you guys haven’t cycled through 4 coaches this season, stick with it mate, pump your team up you have a derby you MUST WIN. You have a lot to still cheer for, a fourth place spot is still in the mix and on any given weekend Milan can pick up three, except when they play Roma, and you guys can play spoiler on Inter’s scudetto hopes. Aren’t these quality reasons to still watch. I am just a fan of Americans being Serie A fans even if you’re a tifiso degli rossoneri.
Good match, could’ve gone either way but really I do think the difference was made in the coaching. Spaletti has hurt us this season but has been on lately.

This is the way I see the squad for the future:
Kaka
Pirlo
Pato
Gourcuff
Paloschi
Oddo
and even Bonera
NestaThese guys are a core to build the team around. We need a couple of good additions to this core.
Gattuso
Ambrosini
Kaladze
Emerson (?)
KalacThese guys, except the last two, have been the bedrocks in recent years but time has come to dial down their first team contribution over the next season. Recruitment should be aimed to find new players who can back them up and over the season, take over from them completely.
Maldini
SeedorfDamnded if you do, damned if you don’t.
All the rest of the squad, with the exception of Ronaldo who should retire before he needs crutches to walk again, are deadwood as far as I’m concerned and should be off loaded or traded for players to fill in the gaps.
