Reggina 1 - Milan 2
By: Gianfranco | September 25th, 2008I have not had the opportunity to see the game yet but I was able to the follow the game cast and read countless post game reports and comments by you as well. I can not give an in depth look at the match and it’s happenings but I have in fact been able to make a fair amount of observations that I want to share:
-Is the Xmas tree dead?
The Rossoneri’s inability to score goals last season and the start of this while employing the xmas tree was no secret. Teams have been able to game plan for it by marking the lone striker out of the match and put a huge amount of responsibility on the tre-quartista’s whoever they may be. The past three games featuring the old one two striker combo has rekindled the Milan of old and showed that this team can still score goals. It has also forced teams to defend deeper and allow for long range shots which have always been a Milan goal scoring stalemate. Xmas tree time of death half time against Genoa…
-Our defense is by no means air tight as it has been in the past so it looks as though we will concede it games the question is how many and can we score first. It seems that when we scored first as in the last three games we have been able to dictate tempo and control the match, but when we are behind it has been a different story. Basically it seems that if we score first we have a great chance at getting the win.
-Borriello is proving his worth time and time again, and added a quality goal to boot. His injury is unfortunate and frustrating in the same regard, should he have been rested? Subbed earlier? We can all second guess but there is one fact, if he is out for Sunday he will be sorely missed. His partnership with Pato has been excellent and their blend of speed, possession, and even aerial threat has really made us a formidable offensive unit again. I just hope he is set for Sunday, and if not, I don’t know what Carletto will do.
-Playing Favalli and Emerson has absolutely no use to the team whatsoever. First of all they are playing poorly, second of all they are occupying a spot that could go to a young player like Antonini, Viudez or Cardaccio and provide a learning experience in a valuable game, and third they are wasting roster and bench space. The policy needs to be a thanks for the service and we will catch you later, the whole signing of Emerson is beyond me anway, TOTALLY USELESS. As for the youngsters, letting these old guys play before them is only stunting their growth as players and is inexcusable. It is a lot easier to tolerate mistakes from a youngster and attribute it to learning than it is a guy like Favalli and attribute it to nothing.
-I am going to rant now about Ronaldinho, so if you are partial to him for all the good things he has done for Milan you may want to not read here. What does it say about Dinho’s form and fitness if Carletto can not give him a run out against Reggina in a mid week tie after he only played a few minutes on the weekend? Either Carletto doesn’t see him fit, or he lacks the trust to have him in a tight game. The flipside of this is Carletto is saving him for the weekend, but I would much rather see the lineup that was played against Lazio sans Dinho come the Inter game. We all bitched for weeks to have Carletto played players who are fit and in form and he is doing and I say more power to him, but it doesn’t save the fact that Dinho is letting me down time and time again. It is still early but I want to a see man rip roaring ready to play when he is out there, and second all of all working his ass as he has done in the past. Dinho was a player capable of passing, dribbling, shooting, and creating magic. All I have seen thus far is a player capable of walking, passing, and occasionally making the quality play. Maybe I expect too much…
-Anyone else think Seedorf will pass out if he keeps this pace and rate?
-The sense of this game was that it was an ugly win, but ten ugly wins is still ten wins, and ten pretty losses are still ten losses. I will take the ugly wins thank you.

i have never seen cardacio play and only a small bit of antoninni but surely they should get the nod over emerson and favalli? young players should not sign for us if that is ancellotti’s attitude, the only young players who will get a chance will be the sons of maldini and seedorfs daughter! and why do people think ronnie should automatically get a game when he has not played well for almost 2 years and is clearly not fit? at least carlo does not show the same blind attiude towards that he reserves for emerson and favalli.

seedorf vs. ronaldinho is an apple vs. oranges argument.
on paper, they play the same position. on the grass, they dont.
seedorf is not in competition with ronaldinho at all. seedorf is playing as a left central midfielder. ronaldinho would play 15 yards further up the pitch as a left sided attacking midfielder.
A, i cant really believe that you think seedorf did not have a big impact vs. lazio. he was the MoM, go check out all the italian papers who gave him an 8. didnt you see the big hug he got from carlo when he was subbed off? that was no coincidence or two pals meeting after a long time.
seedorf had a monster of a game and if pirlo’s style made love to seedorf’s style, that is what manifested itself in seedorf vs. lazio. that bastard love child was the man of the match. you cannot deny it. its simple footballing empiricism, and all the pundits agree.
i honestly hope that carlo fields seedorf in pirlo’s position with ronaldinho and kaka’ in front of him. the christmas tree will work against inter (or theoretically it should). keeping ronaldinho stationed on the left will give maicon something to think about, and keeping maicon on a leash is one of the problems carlo must deal with. but he is the coach, and he knows what hes doing.

Shehan - The whole team looked inspired in the Lazio game.
Kaka looked outstanding, Gattuso and Ambro were chasing down everything in the midfield.
Pato & Boriello opened up TONZ of room for everyone else to work with.
IMO the man of the match was Kaka, and would have been Boriello if he scored. Seedorf looked good for the first 10 minutes (good movement, running, and scored) and then lost the ball….a lot. (As far as I can remember)
But I’ll look at that game again when I go home.

What Seedorf did against Lazio was what Pirlo does game in and game out, he was the outlet guy, he did seem to go missing but when I watched the game again he didnt really disappear he just did the dirty work of passing the ball in very non-glamourous fashion creating the illusion of him going missing.
Funny thought to pass on, as an excercise watch a Milan game with absolutely no commentary and note who you think played well and who didnt, it rarely matches what you read later on and really makes you question how you view the match or “listen” to it.

i agree gian. i think that when you watch a match, you subconsciously pick up who is playing well and who is playing bad. but until something significant makes you actually reflect on that players actions, you never really ‘think much’ about his contribution.
thats why watching a match a second time around is so much more informative in terms of team strategy and individual brilliance, you no longer have the bias associated with the suspense of a game to overshadow your initial understandings.

my problem Shehan is that I get very nervous in the first game and tend to stand and shout which means I miss moments throughout the game, the second watch is way more worthwhile for me when I calm and know the result, it becomes less about the desitination and more about the journey.

Lol @ Shehan - “seedorf had a monster of a game and if pirlo’s style made love to seedorf’s style, that is what manifested itself in seedorf vs. lazio. that bastard love child was the man of the match. you cannot deny it.”
Bastard love child!? Surely the above deserves a “quote of the week” award or sumfin Gian???
Also lol @ Gian - “my problem Shehan is that I get very nervous in the first game and tend to stand and shout”
I do the exact same thing! Im told i look like a manger standing in front of the tv with my arms folded shoutn at the players!
Is there anyway that when u watch a live stream it can be saved to the pc hard disk???

On another note, i have to say, even when we disagree i love the passion of fellow Milanista on the Milan Offside.
The most common sense comments i hear regarding calcio is probs with yourselves (apart 4m wen peeps defend Emerson - ONLY KIDDN!)
And ronan byrne totally nailed it with the comments regarding Cardacio & antoninni.
We need to start blooding our yung bucks! Damn u Carlo!

Avia, compared to some other blogs around here I thorougly enjoy this one for the thoughtful discussion and non personal attacks. Plus you guys all know your shit and I love you for it. But it is nice to know that many of the other blogs: juventus, inter and fiorentina are usually like this as well.

I have watched the Lazio game twice, nothing in the second viewing has made me change what I thought at first about Seedorf.
The papers love Seedorf probably because of the hug.
It was his best game undoubtedly but was it any better than Ronaldinho’s against Bologna. I don’t really think so. Against Genoa he was even worse than the man he replaced. And against Reggina he was a non-entity. That’s Seedorf’s one 1 good, 1 bad and 1 nothing against Roladinho’s one 1 good and 1 bad. Pretty equal to me.

Ronaldinho’s game can not be considered good, the team did not win therefore everyone’s perfomrance was poor and should be quantified. Here is stat for you two starts for Dinho two losses, three non starts three wins, that is the only stat that matters right now…

just wanna say the goal Reggina scored was exactly like the goal my team conceded in our game yesterday. Except we didn’t come back and win 2-1.. blah.

No one is forcing you to an opinion GF. Besides, you need a crash course in cause and effect, rhetoric doesn’t cut it. Just because a team loses does not mean everybody played badly. To tell you the truth if I wanted to see the games again and had a choice between Bologna or Reggina, no prizes for guessing which one I’d choose.
I call creating numerous goalscoring chances and being involved in moves “good” for an attacking player and that’s what Ronaldinho did. It wasn’t his fault Inzaghi and Sheva were crap and couldn’t put them away.

Would you really take Dinho’s good game over the three points?

Nina and Avia, I am sure there is way however it is easy to save it your DVR/Tivo and then USB the file to your hard drive if you are able. Fetyani seems technically savy and probably has a better answer.

Seedorf will probably start over Ronaldinho, beacuse of the fact that he can do dirty work and drop back(Ronnie doesnt do it). Ronaldinho will have to work hard to get a first team place. Him starting along with Kaka and 2 strikers is not a good idea,as it overloads us upfront, and weakens our weakest point, the defense.

also liked the entire discussion on seedorf v/s dinhio - their positions, playing styles and attitude…imo, would go with seedorf over dinhio at least to start with - he’s oozing with confidence at the moment with the games that he has had and that makes a diff - and then sub him off once he has made an impact and gone missing!
