Milan 5 - Reggina 1

By: Gianfranco | April 22nd, 2008

No transfer talk today, only joy of a win that finally made me smile. Even if you take a away the two PK’s, with the first being more deserved than the second, you still have a 3-1 Rossoneri domination. Congrats to Kaka on what was a beauty of a third goal, just fantastic composure and placement.

This should have been a very easy and was, and I do not remember the last time I was able to say that so confidently. The wind was taken out of Reggina early and instead of laying back the Rossoneri showed a killer instinct that had not been seen since the Napoli game where Pato debuted.

Today was such an effective win that I barely even need to mention the defense, outside of a scorching shot on the Reggina goal. These goals are sometimes unavoidable when your wingbacks don’t come back and defend and your shooters are not closed down. But alas a single lapse led to a goal that was a merely a number on the scoreboard. Kaladze had a dominate effort and continues to prove that he can play and should when healthy. All together a solid performance from the defense, it was needed and almost expected against Reggina.

I have to admit that when the game started I was a bit disappointed in Carletto’s choice of an xmas tree formation, because they needed goals by the bunches, and Ambro was suspended. Carletto proved me wrong, and Pippo worked incredibly moving left to right and all over at times appearing to be more than one person. The real reason though for the early success today was Kaka and Seedorf’s willingness to take players on and move the ball causing havoc in the box. Two perfectly placed PK’s by Kaka all but sealed the deal but things got even better.

Carletto made smart moves today, subbing Pato for Seedorf when he showed no gas left in the tank. Pato came on and instantly paired up with Inzaghi for a great one two goal. That goal was the perfect advertisement for two strikers as it showed when one does not succeed the other is quickly to follow. Carletto also took off Rino to a thunderous ovation in favor of Gourcuff who also instantly put his mark on the match with a perfectly weighted pass onto the head of Pato to KO Reggina.

Today was a perfect example of a Milan team firing on all cylinders from the bench to the front. It was honestly a site for sore eyes and with the remaining four games featuring Livorno, Inter, Napoli, and Udinese the season is far from over. The scudetto race may no longer rest on the Derby but twelve points would go a long way in Milan’s road for a top four finish.

Granted some assistance from the Viola’s competition would be great, but you should always take care of your own business first before you rely on the failures of someone else. As I discussed with Peter in past comments, we can only hope that Fiorentina continues on in the UEFA cup and focuses on that prize forgetting their duties in Serie A. Regardless, it is will be a fantastic finish in Serie A from top to bottom.

    gold and diamonds.. lol

shehan i think everyone’s main worry is that he and Kaka won’t be able to play well together.. a conclusion reached after WC 2006, when Brazil played with Kaka and Dinho, but neither player really did much..

Btw, did they play together in 2002?

Moka -If the reports of HOW much Dino is gona cost us are true then im not with you on this one.

I would love to see him in the squad (as Kakas backup!)
but if it came down to buying him for 30mill. or two other players (preferably defenders) i say “Take the defenders damn it!”

God, Kaka was great at the weekend! and wee Pats!

Kaka was in the Brazil squad in 2002 but he didn’t really play since there were “the three R’s” (Ronaldo, Rivaldo & Ronaldinho).

While this was a great show from our team, we have to remember this:
We were playing Reggina. A team in the relegation zone, with a goal differential of -23, only 30 points and 6 wins. If we can keep an amazing run of play going, then that’s fantastic, because I agree the subs and set-up of the team worked beautifuly and we really dominated, but the real test is playing teams who, well, don’t suck. No offense to Reggina though.
So, all in all I’ll gladly trade my Boston Bruins 4-0 loss in game seven of the playoffs for Milan having a great run, but it’s got to continue the rest of the season, or we have absolutely no hope at the CL.

Oh, and I do not see how Ronaldo got us the Cl, or a CL spot, being cup tied last season, and barely playing in Serie A then or now.
But on top of that, ‘Dinho is not that good. He really isn’t, and like Moka said, I don’t think he will mesh very well with the entire squad, never mind just Kaka. His price tag seems to have dropped from 30 mil. but still, there are some better buys out there for sure. Defenders, a permanent keeper, Shevchenko, Drogba, etc etc.

moka, you bring up a perfectly legitimate question, and hopefully my following answer is perfectly legitimate too!

yes, you are right, the brazil team of 06 failed to gel in any of their games. but how much can you blame the players relative to the coach? the fact was that the coach was overrating his array of superstars, and he thought if you left the ball at their feet they could do it all by themselves.

they were playing with 2 strikers (ronaldo and adriano) and 2 attacking mids, r10 and kaka’. this is a huge problem, as brazil struggled to hold any possession of the ball. but you cant expect ronaldinho and kaka’ to hold the ball for thaaat long. and if you dont have possession, you dont have the game. most of brazil’s goals were from rapid counterattacks; and against well-oiled defenses like the frenchies, they struggled to manage only 4 shots if i remember correctly off the top of my head.
it wasnt kaka’ or ronaldinho’s fault, it was the coach’s.

you cant blame the player that much; but if you want to play the performance game then dont forget that in that same year, 2006, ronaldinho led barcelona to a double triumph in the champions league AND the spanish league. how was that? because the coach (rijkaard) knew what he was doing.

yeah, r10 did muck around during the world cup, but shit; it was the coach that was fired/dropped not r10. its easy to blame the players, but the brazilian coach (was it parreira?) really fucked himself good with the apathetic attitude he had to his teams qualities and inefficiencies.

but, if you have watched brazil play with kaka’ and r10 together any other time besides the world cup, its really too beautiful to watch. they play 1-2’s together, they toy with defenses. its art; plain and simple.

we all know how damn good ronaldinho is, hes proven himself in every league hes played in; he can ONLY be a step forward for us. the qualities he brings to the team are a huge advantage than a disadvantage.

and dont forget who our coach is. carlo ancelotti. dont forget what he did to pirlo, carlo created the ‘regista’ position. it was a revolutionary idea, and now you can see many teams with the regista position.

carlo builds the team around the players, he knows how to get the best of his players. he will know how to utilize ronaldinho to his best abilities.

carlo = genius. you know it, i know it. if there is any coach who can get the best out of his player its carlo ancelotti, and if you give him one of the top 3 players in the world, can you imagine the possibilities?

kaka’ and ronaldinho in one club team together? kids will lose their virginities watching them play in the red and black of milan. AND PIRLO, goddamnit this dream cannot get any better.

ronaldinho is not finished, hes 28, its the footballing prime, hes got more to give. so why dont we be the team that takes it?

kaka’, ronaldinho, and pirlo AND PATO… i just shat my pants thinking about it…

mele, ronaldo helped us to 4th place with his 7 goals and 4 assists in 11 games.

we were guaranteed 4th spot with 2 games left in the season, and we fully focused on the champions league spot during that time period.

thats why i said he helped secure the champions league spot (aka 4th place) and indirectly helped us win the trophy by calming the pressure of thinking of 4th place AND the CL trophy at the same time.

its not the SOLE reason we won, but ask any milan player or coach or director and they will say ronaldo helped a shit load last year.

Ronaldinho and Kaka can play together. They were brilliant together @2005 Confed Cup. The formations that Milan play are designed for lots of creative players in midfield.

Gian, if there was three fouls in the PA there should be three PKs. Doesn’t matter how suspect it looks.

Sometimes the officiating in Italy gets too creative and sentimental. And then mistakes creep in and it becomes a theatre with evening ups and other messes.

I wonder if anyone else senses this too?

mele, i’m sorry but i’m gonna have to agree with shehan on this whole Ronaldinho matter..

Ronaldo and Ronaldinho are world-class players.. which means, even if injuries hit them, or they suffer a small dip in form, it’s highly likely they’ll bounce back.. I don’t think I need to remind anyone about Ronaldo’s career, most recently his injury with Milan, only to come back and score 2 goals.. the guy has it in him.. shit if only he didn’t get injured so much.. Dinho is going through a bad period now, but I am very very confident that if he’s given a chance, he will bounce back..

so basically, the verdict here is that Dinho can still be the world-class player he was a few years ago.. :D

now, putting Milan into the picture, I agree that he can play well with Kaka, in a good formation, and with a good coach.. but I think it’ll only work if Kaka and Dinho are playing behind one striker, because they’re both attacking mids, unlike Seedorf, who can go back a bit..

so that brings up another issue.. do we opt for Kaka - Dinho - Pato starting next year, with Seedorf in a position he doesn’t like or on the bench? would we need another striker in that case, with Inzaghi, Paloschi, and the return of Ronaldo?.. mmm

an altenative would be, like mele said, two defenders and a keeper for that price + sheva..

kalac; oddo, nesta, kaladze, zambrotta; pirlo, gattuso, ambro/seedorf; dinho, kaka; pato/ronaldo/pippo

    OR

*insert SOLID defence here*; pirlo, gattuso, ambro; kaka/seedorf; pato, sheva/ronaldo/pippo

ideally, I’d want a combination of both; good goalkeeper, defender, and some offensive class player..

but again, i emphasize, i am FOR Dinho coming, if he plays as a starter, alongside Kaka (rotation with Seedorf perhaps) behind ONE striker.. b/c that’s the only way I see it working..

Barcelona star Gianluca Zambrotta could be set for a sensational transfer to former club Juventus, according to Spanish newspaper ‘Sport’.

Bayern Munich have sensationally withdrawn the contract offer made to German international full back Philipp Lahm, raising speculation that he will be leaving the club in the summer.

Moka, I just saw the Lahm article and I completely agree. Drop the idea of getting Zambrotta (he is destined for Juve anyway) and lets get out there and grab ourselves the German. He is a fantastic left-wingback who can not only play the ball forward like a fullback needs to in Carletto’s wingless formations, but come back and play stifling defense. He is a must sign in my opinion because we don’t have a natural left back with Maldini leaving.

On to Dinho. There is no doubt that he can still play at the highest level, and you can’t base his and Kaka’s performance together purely on WC06, but to me, he just seems like a foolish signing. If Mourinho doesn’t sign anywhere, we can get Drogba. Or Borriello. Or Sheva. Or Toni. My point with this is that forcing Kaka into a Xmas tree is just stupid. A player with that much attacking genius and flair should not be confined to one half of the field and being forced to play off another attacking midfielder. Kaka plays best when he is allowed as much creative freedom as possible, and to put Dinho in there would slow him down. Thats not to say Dinho couldn’t throw his own flair in there, but I think we have the ability to obtain more helpful and cost effective signings.

My ideal signings for this summer are:
    1)Philip Lahm
    2)Luca Toni (long shot)
    3)Didier Drogba (more feasible)
    4)Mathieu Flamini
5)A solid central defender for depth
6)Tommaso Vailatti (he is a stretch, but he is a dynamite young central midfielder)
    7)Don’t sell Gourcuff

    So ideally for next year-
Dida, Oddo, Nesta, Kaladze, Lahm, Pirlo, Gattuso, Ambro, Kaka, Drogba, Pato
Bench: Kalac, New Center Defender, Janku, Flamini Vailatti, Seedorf, Gila

That’s all I got, Forza Milan!

Looks like Lahm will be leaving Bayern in the summer. but the question is who will step up and get him.

“I played for two years at Stuttgart and I am now in my third year of playing for Bayern, the best team in Germany. Therefore it is the logical next step to move abroad.”

Steven I would disagree. I feel Kaka would do better in the x-mas tree formation because it allows him to attack more. We saw that in the CL last year, where that formation was used mostly, and Kaka did brilliantly. And I really have good feelings about Dinho - Kaka in the x-mas tree formation.

Only problem I have is price. 30 mil does seem like a lot, and I’m not willing to accept him as the only new player for next year. If the 30 mil is gonna prevent the purchasing of at least 2 new defenders and a goalkeeper, then that’s a big issue.

im not really a big fan of Drogba, he’s old and doubtful if he’ll adjust quickly and smoothly.

    lol @ Drogba

“Chelsea player Didier Drogba has been buying dozens of his own football shirts to increase the club shop’s sales and persuade team-mates of his popularity with fans.

The 29-year-old, originally from the Ivory Coast, has reportedly spent thousands of pounds on replica shirts in a bid to try and convince his team-mates he is just as much of a crowd favourite as they are.”

Its funny that we can discuss Drogba being past his best while he had the singlest greates African Cup of Nations performance the country had ever seen in January and is playing his heart out at Chelsea even though the he hates the coach…yet we can still see talent in Ronaldinho who hasnt played a good game since the CL final in 2006!?!??

i think its apples and oranges in regards to drogba and ronaldinho.

both are mighty fine players, but i still think ronaldinho is a better player, a younger player, and a more accomplished player.

and c’mon gianfranco, you can’t say that drogba had the ’single greatest’ african nations cup performance ever? thats a bit of a stretch. he had what, 3-4 goals? half of the ivory coast players had 3-4 goals in that tournament!!

im not discounting drogba as a mighty fine player, he definitely is a quality player and one of the top 5 strikers in the game today; but when compared to ronaldinho i would definitely take the brazilian.

but i want to go back to what Steven brought up about restricting kaka’ in the christmas tree. i will have to agree with him on that one; and i think it is the only reason why i’d think r10 to milan could be technically difficult.

but i think with that in mind, we would have to add another box-to-box midfielder to help us; and flamini is perfect.

and another player that i cant believe steven brought up is vailatti. i doubt we’ll get him this season, but in the next 2-3 seasons people will be remembering who he is and everybody will try to sign him.

    good eye steven!
