Milan 1 – Livorno 1, A Bad Day All Around

By: Gianfranco | February 13th, 2008

There is not much I can say about the game that was not said on the comments in the last post. Not a stellar performance from anyone on the pitch really, Rino did well and so did Ambro, but the squad never really gelled today. Carletto’s subs were poor and changed things to much, and R99’s injury made things even worse. It was not a good job on Carletto’s part today at all. I will say one thing, and that is that Amelia is a BEAST, he is the reason this game was a draw today, and I hope Uncle Fester took note.

Back to Ronaldo’s injury, I have heard a ton of conflicting reports. At first I heard it was as hamstring/quad, but as I watched the replays and saw the pain in that man’s face, I could only think the unthinkable. A little while ago, Milan’s website posted news that Ronaldo severly tore the tendon’s in his left knee, requiring major reconstructive surgery and potentially ending his career. At his age, and his difficulty to get healthy, you have to believe that Ronaldo will have a moutain to climb if he sees the pitch again. He is even more unlikely to return to the pitch at the San Siro.

As I have said in the past I was never one of Ronaldo’s greatest fans, hell I hated him when he played for Inter and it made me even angrier when he joined the good guys. Even though I had a ton of dislike for him, I always respected him, and sure as hell always did whatever I could to imitate and emulate that man on the pitch. Il Fenomeno was by no means a “joke title” this guy was the real deal, even Il Capitano said there was no one that he hated to face more than Ronaldo. Speed, size, and strength were just a few pieces of the puzzle that made this man one of the best strikers to ever step on the pitch.

Not much else I can really say other than it is a shame when stuff like this happens, I will let the videos do the rest of the talking. See you all on Saturday morning.

Complete beast. One of football’s greats in recent times. Best of luck to him recovering, it would be a shame if this was the way he went out.

Truly a great one, but you always think there could have been more. But, man, hard to see him ever coming back and getting fit enough to play competitive football again if the report of a shredded knee are correct. That game against Napoli may have been the last bit of greatness (or “really good”-ness) we will see from 99.

I remember watching Ronaldo last season and he was pretty good. That one game where he threw in a bunch of stepovers and then smashed a left footer into the net was awesome. He was always my favorite player growing up, and I think everyone in my generation tried to emulate him on the pitch. Really, really, sad day if this is the last we see of him.

I feel a deep sense of regret and sympathy for Ronaldo. When he feel to the ground in today’s match I was praying that it wouldn’t be one of his monsterous injuries again. I didn’t see him get hit or dragged, he just tore his muscles. I wish him the very best in his recovery, the man was indeed one of the most prolific strikers of our time, strength, size, speed, skill, finishing, intelligence on and off the ball. What more could anyone ask for in a player. Sorry Ronaldo.

Official news! Pay close attention to the last three paragraphs.

    Ronaldo ruptures knee ligaments

MILAN, Italy (Ticker) – AC Milan striker Ronaldo is facing a lengthy spell on the sideline after rupturing tendons in his knee during the 1-1 draw with Livorno on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old was carried off with an injury to his left knee just three minutes after coming on as a substitute at the San Siro.

Early estimates suggest the Brazilian, who has suffered a succession of serious knee injuries throughout his career, will be out for between nine months and a year.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti downplayed fears the injury could end Ronaldo’s career.

“We are all very upset and worried about what happened to Ronaldo,” Ancelotti said. “I don’t think I can say that his career is over, because only time can tell when his career will end. For our part, we can only be there for him and stay calm.

“His teammates left the stadium in a hurry to go to the hospital and find out his condition. For us to be close to him is useful for him in such a delicate moment in his career.”

Milan head of medicine Jean Pierre Meersseman confirmed the extent of the player’s injury.

“After Ronaldo’s injury we decided at once to transfer the player to the Galeazzi hospital in Milan,” Meersseman said. “It is one of the best orthopedic hospitals in Europe.

“There’s little to say about the seriousness of the injury – unfortunately they confirmed that it was a rupture to the tendons of his left knee. He will definitely need surgery. We are all distraught at what’s happened.”

    *
Amelia said that he tried to stop the ball because when ronie got hurt there was a loud noise that came from his knee and that’s why the penalty was given…I think it’s a bunch of bull though because even if the penalty was given because of the noise vidigal(?) stopped the ball with his hand in the box so that’s clearly a penalty but also should have been red carded to.

It is unfortunate that another all time great has succumb to constant injury battles, and that when at the peak of his career. Ronaldo was never the same after the 98 WC final but still continued to be one of the most talked about players, and rightly so. However now he needs to bite the bullet and get out of the game like Van Basten did.

As to the game, I stick with my theory that Gila is useless when he starts. Not that Ancelotti had too many choices though. The front two just did not get into the game at all. Gourcuff is good player but he needs some movement and link up play up front, instead he was mostly forced to look for support coming from the back.

Bonera started like a train wreck waiting to happen but then looked quite solid by the end. Oddo put the team under unnecessary pressure on more than one occasion by giving the ball away cheaply in midfield, and Livorno exploited those break away opportunities well.

Pippo put the best chance straight at the keeper and Ambro could have done better with his chance too but at the end Milan were lucky to not lose.

1-1 all is fair. No team in Serie A is pushover. Now I just hope Kaka and Pato are given a chance for match fitness on the weekend not that Milan can do without the extra firepower anyway.

I’m not a fan of Ronaldo although I acknowledge the immense talent that he has (or had). What happened to him or to any other player for that matter, is a real pity. He also had all those ‘mysterious’ injuries that we don’t really know about. Let’s move on and let him heal. But frankly speaking, I think that’s the end of his career.

As for yesterday’s game, I can only say that for the past three games Milan have been playing way below their capability. I can’t be happy with these games and I think Ancelotti should be very concerned about this. And also, I noticed that if Seedorf and/or Pirlo don’t pass their balls well (or mispassed), the team sort of breaks down.

I really do not know what to think about Milan now and quite concerned about their recent performances. With the injuries accumulating, it just look a bit bleak ahead..

I am extremely saddened to see the best player of recent times go down like this, if the man had a bit more luck I think it would be Pele, Maradona and Ronaldo that would come to mind as the best players in the world ever.

I have to say that admiration is a great word for R99, I just can not help but think if he had really kept his health at a peak if he could have enjoyed much longer success…

what a poor poor man, Ronaldo =[
So sad to see him go down, really. I feel terrible.
Besides that, not a very good game… I did not really like the subs, those were some bad descisions. Maybe putting Pippo in, but not both of them. Idk, not much can be said, and nothing can be done now… We just have to hope the viola lose or draw and we can manage to get a win out of Parma, who do not suck.

Ronaldo is my best, i felt so shocked when I watch my star go down with tears, that’s a man who can clear doubt in the mind of AC Milan’s fans because of his superb play of the ball, one thing with him is that; Ronaldo can dribble past defenders with powerful display he can shoot and score, whenever i see Ronaldo with a ball facing goalkeeper, I always record that as a goal, he is indeed a great player to miss in AC Milan’s Squad, I always want to see him play with Arsenal on the 20th of February, but when man proposed, God dispose. i pray that my Ronaldo will get up again to face the challenges ahead hopefully in this season’s Champions’ League – In Sha Allah.

I feel really bad for R99, fortunately the operation was successful in Paris. But he will be out at least 9 months or so. The support from Milan and declaring that we wont give up on him and we are there for him, showed real class from our management. Its just not right for a player like Ronaldo to go out like that.

I think he is the best ST of all time and the best footballer since Maradona.

Yes our support showed class, we have never been any different. This is Milan.

But I should tell you, whether or not Ronnie ever comes back is immaterial. He will never play for Milan again.
