Milan 1 Lazio 1, Not so Good
By: Gianfranco | March 1st, 2008I have sulked all day, and have yet to really recover. If I sound bitter it is become I am.
Today the Rossoneri was exposed for exactly what they are. A team that lacks the bite to make the final strike in the attacking third, the past few games have made that as transparent as can be. The last five games have yielded 9 points and five goals, and on the outside that may look really nice, but when you needed 12-15 points this really does not look all that good.
Injuries have really been bad lately but it only exposes the lack of depth and youth that is needed for the long difficult season of playing in Serie A, Europe, and International tournaments. This team was just not built for this and it is really starting to show. Today, in desperation Carletto played three strikers, of the first time I can remember Milan had three attackers on the field and not even then could they get a goal from the run of play. The lack of creativity today was the real root of this problem, but it also showed the very poor form of Gila, Gourcuff, Digao, Bonera, Emerson, and maybe I should not even keep going…
Lazio did nothing special today and Milan had no real answer for them. Even Pato disappointed me today, I enjoy his style of play and really like the heart that he brings, but there are times when a pass may better than shot. I understand I may be overly critical here, but this squad has eleven players, and ten, OK maybe 8 can score given the opportunity (Kalac is a goalie and Digao just sucks). Their was very little cohesion and ball movement up front today to do anything dangerous in the way of attack. In fact lets map out a Milan attack today.
1. Rino wins the ball in midfield
2. He moves it to Oddo
3. Oddo looks for Pato
4. Pato makes a move and either loses the ball or passes
5. The cycle starts again with a different player
Nowhere in that lineup is the killer through ball, cross, or shot on net. It just does not amount to what is needed for a win.
What’s next…
On Tuesday Arsenal are coming to the San Siro. They tied this weekend, and were lucky to do so. This can mean one of two things, they are really focused for Tuesday or they are on a poor form streak. I am willing to bet they are really focused. This match is going to be by no means easy, and a win is the only way the Rossoneri are going through.
Kalac is playing well and I could not be happier with Oddo, Nesta, Kaladze, and Maldini. Even Janks is playing strongly, though not his old self. The midfield is also OK with Ambro, Rino, and Pirlo. It is the attacking third that needs work. Seedorf is out, and this is very much OK, especially if Kaka is back in form. If Kaka is OK then I would slot him behind Pato and Captain CL, Pippo. If Kaka is not healthy it leaves Carletto with the option to slot Cuffy in the Kaka spot, or to move Pirlo to an advanced roll and slot Gourcuff or even Serginho onto the left flank. This will assure that Pirlo is involved in the attack and leave Rino running wild in the back in front of the defense with Ambro out wide right. I know it hasn’t been done this way in a long time, but I feel that it may work. Pirlo closer to the opposing goal may give the Rossoneri the best shot at long range scoring opportunities and good ball movement. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
I will not have the strength or the will to post a preview before Tuesday, Maldini Monday will be here for sure, but I will post a thread for us to discuss the game as it happens on game day.
Below is the picture of the last, and only Milan squad to ever defeat Arsenal. Find comfort in the legends and hope that their strengths can be shown through the current squad.

Avia, there are equivalents. Silvestri of Lazio is very good and so is the Juve defender who just signed a new deal, his name eludes me. Napoli has two great backs in Cannavaro and Domizzi. Udinese has a youngster from Colombia named Zapata. They are there but they have to instill with faith and played heavily very early on.

Hmm, I wouldnt mind seeing us sign Zambrotta, he has played quite well recently. *Sigh* I know he maybe past the peak but i just want that steel vault door back!

Gianfranco, if I’m not mistaken, you’re talking about Domenico Criscito. He’s very very good.
I wish we could get Chiellini. And Barzagli is good, except the Palermo defence is the worst in the league.
Ibrahim Ba.. LOL.. He signed a 1 year contract for 250,000 Euros. That’s nothing! He came back to Milan for his son in the youth team.
Bye Paulo, and hello Daniel; http://youtube.com/watch?v=zXpPD3FpxIg

I would like to see Benzema and Breno from Sao Paolo play for Milan next season. Some of the deadwood already mentioned should be done away with but Gourcuff is definitely not one of them. Amauri would be nice too but again he is not a great goal scorer even though he is a terrific player.

I know the ‘tired’ excuse is not good, but it’s the reality now, i know how tiredness can affect your performance from my high school football days,
and we have to face it… and i think with Gourcuff, Digao, Pato, Paloschi getting game time, it will only make it better for us in the future. They’re getting better, especially Pato… and Gourcuff, I like his game… with more caps on his hand, he’ll be able to supersub Ambrosini, Pirlo or Kaka.
I know the fact that it’s late in the season means we have to use all our strength instead of fielding unexperienced youngsters, but we’re fighting for champions league too, and we need to rest players on league games.
I think Ancelotti wants to field best squad on Champions League games, he had to choose, and we need to respect it.
I don’t like blaming, but if I have to blame anybody, it will be Galliani and no one else.

moka - as a Palermo fan who sees every game, Barzagli has been awful this year. He’s supposed to be our captain but does not act or play like one. In fact, he’s not even our best defender this year. I’d place him third behind Rinaudo and Zaccardo. Unfortunately, our moron of a coach just now realized that Rinaudo is our best defender and has been giving him p.t.
Just a thought. I don’t want any delusions of Barzagli…the only time he plays well is when he’s with the national team.

Injuries and age have robbed this team’s ability to battle effectively on 2 fronts-domestic and CL. The worst possible outcome would be to crash out of the CL AND miss CL qualification for next year. A part of me feels that an early exit from the CL would be the best thing for the club-it would allow Milan to focus on 4th place, which is going to be a battle, and an early exit rather than an extended run in the CL would (hopefully) completely eliminate the malaise in the front office. The coffers would then be opened wide for an unprecedented complete refresh of the club and (most importantly) Maldini would be convinced to go 1 more year for a glorious finish at the Stadio Olimpico (CL 2009) and another Scudetto. Now that would be a more deserving finish for Maldini rather than this broken down sputtering year (and no, CWC doesn’t count).

It’s time for Maldini to call it quits. Let’s hope the players raise their game and give him a fitting send off. The bloke has had to endure some major defeats- I don’t want to seem him leave on a low note.

I’d love to see Maldini play another season (lol, who doesn’t), but imagine the pain from past injuries he have to endure if he go for another season. It’s best for me that he retires now than retire later next season coz of super-heavy injury.

Peter I have thought the way you have for a weeks now, and keep suppresing it but hearing you say makes me realize that it aint all that bad. Sometimes the only way you fix something is by realizing it is broke. Maldini will not and should not play another season, its selfish for us to think that as fans, I have always said he has given us more than we can ask for, but I would hate to see him leave this way.
The really nice thing is the foundation of the squad is strong, you can build around Pirlo, Rino, Pato, Kaka, Oddo, and Nesta. That foundation is solid as a rock and if you throw in some young fullbacks, a solid left winger, and an out and out striker things are coming up Red and Black.

peter i am with you with the early exit of the cl but not about 4th place i think it won’t be as great becuase uncle fester and berlu only care about qualifying to the cl so a finish in 5th or 6th place will force them to make moves in the summer. Just look at what happened to bayern munich last year they did not qualify for cl and lost the bundesliga they had to blow up their squad basically. I personally think sheva should not come back he decided to leave so it should stay that way.Just a question to everyone, Is it just me or is Rino Not been the same as of late he seems tired or sometimes of even old?

When Baresi retired in 1997, AC Milan was experiencing one of its darkest periods. But this never made him any less of a legend. Milan is in a delicate predicament at the moment but it’s far from being a crisis that we experienced almost ten years ago. When Maldini retires, he will be 40 and regardless of what happens to Milan this season, he will be regarded as one of Milan’s greatest legends. So, it will not be fair for him to continue playing next season just to see him lifting the cups, all that he has won so many in the past (although this is an ideal situation). As most of us who have been used to watch Milan play without Baresi, so we should learn to watch Milan play without Maldini in the future.

…and I think UEFA and FIFA should give Maldini a special award for his services to football since he has unfairly missed that individual Ballon d’Or and FIFA Player of the Year thing..

I’ve always admired Maldini - Pure Class is my usual comment.
But i would like to see him go at the end of the season, firstly because even though he still shows his pedigree on the pitch and he has demonstrated this a number of times this season, there have also been times where some guys have got the better of him, that makes me wince when i see that.
Dont get me wrong, i will remember him as one the worlds best defenders, an all time great (second ONLY to Baresi).
Secondly, most people will prefer to see him go out whilst he still has it, as opposed to watching him struggle, Milan wouldnt be doing him any favours asking him to stay on.

People said that about us last year and we came home with more silverware than anyone else!
As little Jake (surley a must for THE Milan Mascot) would say FORZA MILAN!!!!

You guys should relax. I’m a gooner. I like Milan a lot and watch them regularly. It’s true you’re not exactly on form right now but neither are we. It may be a tough game for you tomorrow but I have no doubt you’ll go thru. We’re just awful right now and we’ve probably thrown away the league too. Yes, our players will be up for it but so will your players. I just don’t see this current Arsenal team with the injuries and form they’re in right now getting even the necessary draw that we need to go thru. And I’m not saying this to jinx you or wind you up, I’m being entirelty sincere. I’m not the only gooner who’d feel no shame in going out to Milan. (We went out to PSV last season!) Regardless of your current weaknesses, I just think it’s inevitable that you’ll find a way to get thru, it’s what Milan DO time and time again. We, on the other hand, have no freaking idea how to do that.

Milan is like Jeykll & Hyde sometimes. For tonight’s game against Arsenal, I am very nervous about it. Very nervous. Ancelotti said something about repeating the Milan-MU game last year, which to me is such a crap comparison. Even when MU beat us 3-2 last season, I still had that high confidence of Milan being able to overturn that result in their favor, which they did. MU played an open game then. But for Arsenal, it’s another different creature altogether. If Milan plays like how they played a fortnight ago - i.e. ‘great’ defending and not many scoring chances - then they’d be dead. Arsenal has nothing to lose.
Then, for some funny reason - which is terrifying - as I was in the shower this morning, that Deportivo-Milan game in 2003-04 season came to mind. I almost got shock there and then.
