Atalanta 2 - Milan 1
By: Gianfranco | January 23rd, 2008Well there is a ton weighing on my mind after watching this game. First of all the Rossoneri had at least 5 solid chances in front of net in the first half. Pato missed a sure fire goal, as many of us tifosi have known in the past when Milan misses chances, it means missing points. I have to say I liked the lineup and I liked the way they moved the ball forward in attach, but on occasion things do not go your way. There is an old italian saying that goes, “One team played while the other team won,” and that adage fits perfectly here. Milan did everything they were supposed to do but finish, and ultimately paid for it in the end.
The two defensive lapses are hard to swallow, but it really goes to show that Carletto has to get more time for the likes of Bonera, so that out of postion mistakes do not happen again. If the club is not willing to season defenders than maybe it is time they make some purchases. What really gets though is the fact that the game went pretty well in all aspects but the scoreline, which is the most frustrating thing for a fan. Especially when teams like Inter are playing way below standards and still getting three points, and you wonder why people are crying scandal.
I would like to point a few things from today as well. The first being the ability of Atalanta’s midfield to constantly push the ball forward even in simple clearances. It seemed that Milan’s midfield, more importantly Pirlo and Gattuso, were not as involved as they could have been, and when that happens you know a win is hard to come by. Second thing, is Pato’s inablility to slam one home today, we all know what Gila went through and has gone through so I hope it is not contagious. Lastly, I cannot stress that everyone needs to really make the best use of their chances time and time again, the offsides today were just childish and looked like a pure lack of concetration. The strikers cannot waste chances anymore, the squad is just to desperate for points.
Where do the Rossoneri go from here. The transfer window has seven days left, and after todays loss I am sure the gears are turning in the Milan front office. I would not expect a huge big name signing, but the likely hood of a role playing defender or striker may be very worth the expense. It is quite clear that the likes of Emerson and Cafu are very inconsistent and unusable, which leaves a large gap in the defensive/defensive midfielder role. The problem lies with a real lack of good available players, and the real unwillingness of Milan to make a deal, more on that tomorrow or the next day.

hey I enjoy the blog. I’m an arsenal fan but a Milan sympathizer. Oddo today was horrendous, some of his crosses were amazingly poor. I’m starting to think Gourcuff looks lost most of the time also. I am not sure if he should be playing so far to the right, he doesnt seem to offer great service or have any pace. Maybe hed be better suited playing in a kaka role, in which case Id try to sell him now why his value is still so high. He is starting to smell like a bust to me. Milan could really use some better pace and service out wide. I think they have a general lack of speed which is starting to be exposed.

I think is the naked truth,Ac is been relaing on the champoins a bitt to much…or too long can i say,i am a BIG Rossonero fan,but u should be blind not to see that is time to buy, buy, buy, and i’m not talking about a young talent, but a solid defence that is in the prime, players that have experiance,i’m not saying that they dont have great champions, but THEY ARE GETTING OLD!come on,they cant play like they did last season.Look at inter…i must say, every bad result for inter is a victory for me,honestly,my worst enemies, but they have the game right now,i think that the all family thing is great, that is what gott them where they are…but u cant hit on the cheast and say i gott the best team in the world when the players are getting old, sell!!!If the player know how to apriciate, they will know that some of them gott alot from Milan more that they given, and the only way out of this is acceptin the fact that the purchse must be ultra hot this summer, and some game must be brought to the team, and some gott to go.Sometimes i fell like all the teams know how AC is going to play, couz they have the same game for a long time now…starting to lose on there efficiency…a SCREAM FOR A CHANGE!!!DONT BE BLIND

Really disappointing result. It wasnt a crappy performance, but we need to stop making such errors in defence. We really need a fullback, and I hope Milan sign someone in the next week.

The problem is the bench. Milan have the starting XI and that is it. There is nobody on the bench who can come in and really make a difference. Emerson and Brocchi won’t provide and spark, and Gourcuff is still unimpressive. When Milan won the Scudetto in 2003/2004 they had players like Rui Costa and Tommasson on the bench, who could come in and make a real difference.

Heck Francesco, guys like Rui Costa even started a ton of games, but you are right the bench is just that, a bench. Whereas in the past there was some potential starters on that bench which makes all the difference in the world when it comes to depth.

Gianfranco, imo its a two fold problem. Firstly, the squad, when you have a squad comprising of Maldini, Nesta, Gattuso, Seedorf, Pirlo, Kaka & Ronaldo all the teams around you should be bricking it at the idea of going up against u, this we know is not the case. We are at times let down by the weaker links in the team and this needs to be rectified in the summer. New Goalie please, new defenders plus Drogba up front!
The second part of the problem (and was apparent last night) is that Carletto doesnt seem to be able to get that extra oomph from the players. He has done soo much for us, but i truly believe that we need a new coach after the summer. Step forth Mr Mourinho!
Fetyani - “as for any transfers, just bring some very good defenders who can live up to the Milan defense history, baresi->costacurta->maldini->&nesta” Thank God! Good to know someone out there has a clue. Fets, maybe u should print out your post, tie it to a brick and send in Uncle Festers direction, maybe that might get his attention??
Cheers Hana - i managed to cheer myself via YouTube also, i recommend the “dave chappelle washington dc” cracks me up!

its the tactics.
more than 90% of the goals scored against us this season are crosses from the flanks, as the first goal was scored.
we are being stretched thin, especially on the counterattacks. on the counterattacks teams are coming up down the flanks rather than through the middle, and its stretching us to pieces.
but honestly, langella turned out a MoM performance yesterday. he tore us to shreds like no player has this season. hats off to him.
we gotta think forward, play with what you have. this team can offer more, must offer more. we are world champions!!! we claim this title for a reason, with the same team that achieved CL qualification last season.
its all in the mind. milan has been one of the most psychology-based teams in the past decade; football is 99% mind and 1% skill. the boys gotta step up.
its a matter of pride now..

apparently the milan tifosi arent taking these recent bad performances lightly.
Bullet Found At Milan HQ
According to reports in Italy an envelope was sent to the club’s offices and it contained a bullet. The envelope also contained a note with a message for president Silvio Berlusconi, director Adriano Galliani and coach Carlo Ancelotti.
The message was written in upper case and reads:
“For the negative results of the team and for the wrong choices.”

Shehan hit it on the head…tactics is the problem.
Are attack is one dimensional and predictable. We give the ball to Pirlo and how that he can dump the ball over/around or through the defense and to a player.
Pato against Napoli attacked his defenders all the time…he’s stopped that these past two games. When KAKA, RONALDO, & PATO ATTACK their defenders it cause the defense to shift and they can’t park the bus.
Yes…Pato will lose the ball alot like he did in the Napoli game…but I prefer him to lose the ball 5 or 6 times trying to breakdown his defender and we win (as demonstrated in Napoli) then kicking it back to Pirlo all the time trying to thread passes through the defense.
We need to use our Brazilan 3 to take on their defenders, and then Pirlo’s passes will become even more effective.

my bullets are still with me, as soon as the season ends and it turns out they gave Il Capitano’s last season, one of his worst, especially if he loses his last derby too. lets just say Galliani will be found dead in the toilets with what looks like Dida’s head up his ass.

The bullet in an envelope thing has been going on at least since last season. Inter have gotten them too (including one earlier this week).
It also is a not unheard way of expressing distaste with politicians and other public figures.
There are currently 200 tonnes of undelivered mail sitting in a warehouse outside of Milano because the postal service is incompetent. One wonders how the stuff with bullets seems to get through.

On a different note, was the game closed to the fans? The stadium was almost entirely empty, and the 20 or so people that did make it looked pretty disinterested. I hadnt read anything about the game being “closed”, so I was just wondering if I missed something. I also wonder if the absence of the 12th man had anything to do with Milan’s poor performance.

It was played behind closed doors as a result of the trouble that led to it being suspended in the first place.
Though I would posit that that hurt Atalanta more than Milan (to the extent it influenced the result at all).
