Wednesday Milan Musings
By: Gianfranco | October 1st, 2008Watching the Champions League without AC Milan is kind of like watching the baseball playoffs sans the New York Yankees. The games are still going on but it is just plain missing something, and quite frankly I don’t care. But with all our Champions League history, we would all make very good CL pundits to discuss the outcome of the fixtures and say cheeky things like, “Gourcuff bulged the ol’onion bag,”or “Bordeaux’s red card truly cost them the match.”
So I do want to take a minute to reflect on match day two of the CL, and hope you all do the same as well. Very impressed with Arsenal’s performance yesterday, and as I discussed at length with my Arsenal fan friend, Chad, the CL brings out the best in Arsenal. The desire for opponents to score on them only opens the pitch for their attack and their stylish brand of attacking football. They may not win the CL, but they certainly can be a joy to watch.
The other point I want to mention is the underperformance of teams like Barcelona, Bayern, Lyon, Chelsea, Shaktar, and Juventus on this match day. Granted Barcelona got the win, but they did not deserve it, with Shaktar throwing the game away late. Juventus played well but was forced to chase the game, while the rest fought hard for their single points. Many of these teams are underperforming, or not reaching expectations, in their domestic leagues and you can’t help but think that their CL performances may also suffer.
Surprise of the CL thus far, Cluj, with four points and second in the group containing Chelsea, Roma, and Bordeaux…
Onto the Rossoneri, and the underrated piece of silverware they are fighting for, OK maybe it is not underrated or even rated, but I wish Milan success and strength in this competition to assure Paolo gets some shine in his last season.

Milan needs at least a draw to advance past FC Zurich, and a win would assure their passing. But a win is more important than just qualifying for the next round of UEFA, instead a win here will give Milan four in a row, and an injection of confidence that may carry this team further up the Serie A ladder. In fact, just pondering this makes me wonder when the last time Milan won four games in a row was.
For those of you who didn’t see the first game here are the highlights:
Let’s just hope we can see a repeat.

kaladze out for some time now - who does that leave us with as cbs? maldini def cant play week after week - thank god we have some time off after the cagliari game - but the situation looks dire - while the attack is getting better & gelling with each game, the defence situation keeps getting grimmer - even if nesta and senderos do come back, they wouldnt have had any match practice with the rest of the team and hence would be rusty - i expect the next couple of games to be key and we play sampdoria after the break

For jerseys my friend told me about this site: http://www.thefootballshirt.com/
i haven’t actually bought and the prices are kinda unbelievably low but he told me that he recieved his juventus gear and it was completely authentic.
I still prefer milan shop or the milan point in milano.

6.99 pounds for all jerseys. That’s fishy don’t you think? I don’t know. I actually never bought any clothes online, so I don’t know. :-s
My best bet is just to go to that place Bonnie and Fet were talking about.

Maldini was only supposed to play alternate games. He played against Inter,Zurich(70 mins) and now against Cagliari ? I hope he is up for it. He and Bonera are the only CB’s available.
Great news that Nesta will be back soon.Posted from

Ambrosini can play there…..

Moka, he can, but so can Sheva, the question is do we trust them there…

bad news…
Milan could be without defender Kakha Kaladze for a significant period after he sustained a knee ligament injury last night.
It was a good night for the Rossoneri as they shrugged off FC Zurich to book their place in the Group stage of the UEFA Cup.
But the jubilation was tempered by fears over Georgian international stopper Kaladze, who had to come off after half an hour.
“After Kaladze left the pitch in the first half with an injury, Milan’s medical staff found a ligament problem in his left knee,” a statement from the Diavolo reads.
“In the next few hours we will evaluate the extent of the problem and the recovery schedule.”
Kaladze could be out for a while, which will put pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s strained defence.
Philippe Senderos and Alessandro Nesta are still injured, leaving Daniele Bonera and Paolo Maldini likely to start against Cagliari.

anthony, can you did deeper into the validity of that website? 7 pounds for 70 pound jerseys is unheard of. even in thailand..

But Ambro has always been considered as defense backups, he said so himself.
I don’t mind Bonera and Maldini for the Cagliari game… but if Nesta and Senderos don’t make the planned return after International break, we screwed.

My idea earlier was that maybe Flamini could help plug up the backline???
I thought he did well in keepn Adriano in check last week and at least in the back he would more likely be a regular starter??

i think we will have to use a combo of ambro and flamini as well to plug the holes - no way can paolo play every game
when do we start playing coppa? we need those games to try out these combinations - cant jeopardise any games in serieA, damn it!Posted from

Shehan, I just ordered from it today, I figure if its a knock off I can wear it to practice and if not then its a sweet deal. Products should arrive in two weeks I will let you know as soon as I get it.

Flamini has said explicity that he doesnt want to play defense, and in fact elluded that he would rather not play, but it may be media hogwash. Bottom line is in times of need all hands deck!

ambro could be a better defender than flamini since he has a better bulid and he is excellent in the air. flamini has a lot of attacking attributes which we might miss if he defends

Yea, Ambro’s physical strength can be useful in the back.

Ambro is a built like a defender and his aerial prowess is very good, but his lack of real speed may hurt us, then again compared to other options, it isnt so bad. I would rather seem Ambro slot in there than Flamini, but come January a CB is now an absolute must…

Thiago Silva’s contract expires Dec. 31!

If push comes to shove, Jankulovski can play in the middle. Flamini is good enough reserve full-back, if needed.

I’d rather see Darmian at the centre than Janku

can we make another non-EU signing this year? we signed sheva in the summer window… so not sure whether the non-EU rule would apply to the whole season or on a transfer window basis… any thoughts?
