Thursday Milan Musings
By: Gianfranco | February 28th, 2008First the good news, the first ever Milan Meet and Greet was in my opinion a success, we got to learn a ton of new stuff as well and meet some new members of the Rossoneri faithful. A couple of the great points were the unconditional love for Maldini as the best current player, as well as the Rossoneri a lot of you became Milanista. We all obviously hate Istanbul, which is why I propose we never discuss it again, EVER. Lastly, there is a ton of love for Marco Van Basten, so enjoy this:
Drum roll please, it is time for the dreaded bad news…
The run of play following the Arsenal game has been as poor as I can remember it, and I can remember some poor times (96-98 I know you remember, you told me). I want to blame Carletto game in and game out, but I can’t. This is not all his fault. If Fester and Ol’Man Berlu had opened their checkbooks and bought some dynamic bench players, instead of the stable of geriatric Brazilians we may not be in this position. If you look down Milan’s bench you see two things, defenders (Bonera, Cafu, Favalli…) and holding players (Brocchi, Ambro, Emerson…), don’t get me wrong these players are all very serviceable as role players, but not a single on of these players even remotely can come on and spark the team to score. Quite honestly, outside of Pippo, the bench is just plain boring.
That leads me to yesterday against Catania, where I can blame Carletto. First of all we all know that Catania has given Milan fits this season and last, so for Carletto to play that lineup he was lining up a draw and does not deserve anything more. What compounded the misery where his substitutions, where was Gourcuff? Why not bring in Serginho to spark some flank play? I just do not get it. The only explanation I could possibly come up with was that Gourcuff may have to play for Kaka against Arsenal, but why not give him a run against Catania? This just does not make much sense, the game where players are rested should be Saturday, but instead he used this game, and still had to bring in Rino and Oddo to make up some damage control. This team is really playing its why out of the top four, and lacks the real cutting edge necessary to make the jump that has been made in the past. On a side note, great shot by Pato, and Juan Vargas is the real deal.
On deck, is Lazio whom Milan has a good record against, but it really looks like this team lacks the desire to get more than a draw on any given day. I do not even know what Earth Carletto will do this Saturday and am almost afraid to venture a guess. One has to believe that Maldini will be rested along with Pato, but the rest is a toss up. Three points are almost a must on Saturday, and if the Viola win then it is absolutely imperative.
Finally we can discuss Arsenal. Again it is safe to say that I am scared, the home record of the Rossoneri in CL can only make so confident. I saw what Arsenal can do, and I know they handled it, but a draw at San Siro means Milan are out of the cup. Carletto has to get some aggression out of this time, and sadly enough I do not where that is going to come from, and if it does come out can this squad continue to elevate themselves game in and game out as the CL progresses? I really hope Milan possess this aggression some where but it has been so long since I have seen it, to think only a few months the Rossoneri manhandled Boca Juniors and just yesterday Catania pushed them around like rag dolls, as you can see my confidence is a bit jaded.
My new pal Dave at the RBNY Offside blog has a great idea, and I want to pass it along. If you own an XBOX360 and you like to play FIFA 08 online please go to this link for the first ever offside.com FIFA Tournament. Sorry but I have got first picks on AC Milan, but can be persuaded to choose others, I look forward to playing with many of you, and if you are not the tournament type I am always happy to entertain challenges, just look for gamertag: ISTALLIONGB

I think Carlo Ancelotti has his reasons why he is not or seldomly playing Gourcuff. He is often too hectic on the pitch as to what I have seen of him. He has talent and it has to be nurtured. To say that Ancelotti is not nurturing young talents is untrue. How old was Kaká when he arrived? He was certainly not a complete player. Now he is the worlds best. Is Pato not a talent? Gourcuff is 21, same age Kaká was when he came to Milan. Our favorite Brazilian did not play every game at the beginning and he had his doubters too. He proved them wrong. I am not saying that it will be same for Yoann but I am confident that Ancelotti knows what he is doing. There are a lot factors that play a role and instead of complaining we should have a little more trust in our team and those responsible.

Fetyani - my Milan brethern, im sorry to say that i think your a little off the mark in relation to Rijkaard.
If u want to discuss crazy substitutions and formations may i present Carletto!
Rijkaard - was the one who benched Dino for the past couple of months and has only recently brought him back into the fold, which took abit of steel to do. His formations will generally suit the players he has on the pitch.
And we’re the ones who play with the xmas tree not Barca, ive actually watched the last three Barca matches and they’ve played a million times better than we have in our last three matches. They just constantly threatn the oppositions goal but also bury the opposition.
Barca played the Spanish equivilant of Catania at the weekend and thrashed them 5-1. He even had the sense to take off Dino & messi when they were 3/4 - 0 up and he replaced them with their emerging equivalents.
He’s not my number one for replacing Carletto (who i now think has advertised why he should go) but i do think he will do better and nothing to do with him being a former Milan player.
And Galliani supporting Carletto (by insisting that we will still have him coaching next season) only imo adds to the logical reason for Carletto to go (i love u man, but we now need a change, sorry).

ASL you make an outstanding point, but Kaka seemed to have the tools, they were just very raw. Carletto in my opinion has not done anything for a fairly young Gila, or even Bonera. Think of Zaccheroni and where Gattuso, Sheva, and Ambro would have been without him. In Kaka’s case Carletto got lucky…

Avia, I agree 100% the relationship has run its course, people always mention Sir Alex and Wenger and all the years, those guys are complete anamolys, no one does that, Carletto should leave for himself to grow as well as the club…

Gian, and i in turn agree.
Since when did u need to nurture skill like Kakas? Dont get me wrong ASL but guys like ‘Dino, Kaka either switch it on or they dont imo. Some players have to work 24/7 to achieve a level that others are already gifted with. No?
PS like Hana im probs gona go over the previous Meet & Greet posts, cool to know we are all so different but equally passionate about our boys.
Gian, have you ever given consideration to the “Frapper” map thing that some forums use??

Need some more info on the Frapper Avia, no idea what it is.

I saw it on a LOST forum once, its a map thats lets forum members plot where they are across the world. Im suggesting this coz we seem to be a truly international collection of Milan tifosi!
Have just googled it: http://www.frappr.com/
I guess you would know better than me if it is usable by the offside or not?

I agree with some points and I don’t agree with others. I agree that some benefit of the doubt should go to management and I like what Carlo has done for the club.
Let’s remember one of the greatest tactical masterstrokes of recent times, sticking Pirlo in the “qtr back” position. Let’s remember that Milan has played some unforgettable football as a result. Let’s not forget that Milan this season is one hit by regular injury problems to key first teamers.
I have to disagree with Gian on Gila too. Gila is what he is. He ain’t going to be van Basten. Gourcuff sometimes lacks in intenstity and concentration but it took me a few years to understand Zidane’s game too. Not that I’m saying Gourcuff is Zidane but the guy has the ability to make a difference in the Catania type of game. It was incredible why he was left on the pitch. One point is jack, 3 points meant much more. Easy equation in my book, take Brocchi off and stick the Frenchy in.

In response to your original post Gianfranco and our last performance, i will have to refer to my previous postings on the “Meet & Greet”………………………

I was watching the match while i typed up the last post and wanted o know if it is too late to change my worst milan moment?? Coz it would now read ………………
………………………..the last half of the 07/08 season that saw some lacklustre team and individual displays mixed with some of the most bizarre substitutions ever made that eventually saw Milan lose forth place to Fiorentina and lead them to chase the wooden spoon in the UEFA cup!Posted from

To me, Gourcuff has talent. He may not be as skillfull or as talented as Kaka. However, even Kaka had to work hard to get where he is at right now. All the talent in the world won’t make you a great player if you not work hard every day. Even raw skills need to be smoothed and I doubt that he did it just by himself. I don’t believe ACM would have purchased a player like Gourcuff if his talent would only equal up to Carsten Jancker’s (whoever knows him!?) Again, I don’t know what Ancelotti does to help improve his players. I have never been part of a training session at Milanello. Is it not possible that he works hard to help players like Gilardino, Bonera or Gourcuff improve? And yes, I belive that even players like Ronaldinho or Kaka needed help to advance in their game or to be nurtured, cultivated. Especially when they startde their carrers in Europe. Even practice with players such as Nesta, Maldini, Pirlo or Kaka wil make you a better player. Gourcuff will benefit from that, he wishes to. Plus, is not giving away players on loan a way of nurturing talent? ACM has a couple of young players on loan right now. I bet Ancelotti decided on their future too. There is also a lot of pressure on Ancelotti. What if he is fielding Paloschi every game from now on, only to quiet everyone who complains about him not nurturing talent, and he does not score a goal for the remainder of the season?

24 people in the FIFA 08 Tourney (and thanks for the link man)
Fritz is the RSL writer - if he gets an XBOX then we have 25. We are closing in on 32!
Since youve actually DONE the online league tourney, email me with how we can shape this up. Do we create small leagues of 4, the winners advance to a new tourney?
Hit me up brother!

Hey, he might actually be doing us a favour!
Think about it folks!

I still like Gila. He’s so… emo. I know he’s not the “best” player ever, or even “adequate” at times, but goodness, I will miss his pleadings and puppy-dog eyes. I have a feeling you boys won’t look at it quite the same, but maybe I’ll get a little support from Ro or Sam!

I mean if he does leave, not that I believe that tripe from goal.com.

Gianfranco, the feelings are mutual. Not Gilardino-Juve, please god…don’t buy him. We don’t need an inconsistent diver of dubious quality, even if he is at heart a bianconero.
On a side note, we’re being linked with a Villarreal midfielder. I would encourage Milan to buy him. Marcos Senna. He’s old and he’s Brazilian….seems like it’s only a matter of time before Milan swoops for him.

Are we starting a new old Brazilians to replace outgoing old Brazilians thread? I nominate Belletti at right back.

Bonnie I do have a soft spot in my heart for Gila…he just needs to work on his skill a little more and stop taking pointers from inzaghi because one outrageous diver on a team is enough…

Peter, your comment made me laugh, I think its best we go a different direction no, I am surpised Roberto Carlos didn’t make his way over, would have had both ancient Brazilian backs.

Way to leave me out Bonnie
Haha, yes, Gila is indeed the emo boy of our team. No one can match the sadness on his face when he misses a shot. I like him quite a bit,but it really is just mind-boggling how he went to the insane goal-scoring machine he was for Parma…to…this?Um. Yeah. Goal.com is like the National Enquirer of football news. you really do have to laugh when you see headlines like “Sheva seen dining with Milan team. Return is Emminent!”

do agree with bonnie - will miss him and i think he put on a good display against palermo - hope we dont end up losing him and not signing anyone else since we ‘already have a world class strike force of inzaghi, pato, paloschi, kaka and ronaldo who will miraculously recover and rediscover his form for us soon.’ - this btw is galliani speak!
http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=581856 - so its not only that we will not let them go, now even the players wont leave the retirement home…
on another note, uncle fester’s election promises have ‘cleaning up the mess in naples’ at number 1 - how about doing something to clean up the mess here????? get a ‘new broom’ - something is needed to shake things upPosted from

Gianfranco, the Van Basten vid brought back some truly sad memories, the fact that even the Iceman - Fabio cried showed and perfectly encapsulated what Van Bastens retirement meant to alot of people.
I held out for sooo long on the chance that he may come back, even 3/4 yrs after he left there were still rumors surfacing that he was planning on making a comeback (probably originated by goal.com!)
