Tactics Tuesday: Balance
By: Gianfranco | November 24th, 2009The key word of this tactics discussion is balance. Balance, especially when utilizing a 4-3-3, is imperative in a footballing sense. Balance is the glue that holds the squad together and dictates the defensive and offensive stages of the games, and in the end determines an easy win over a hard fought win, or worse, a loss. Plainly put the ten field players on the pitch need to be versatile while providing defensive pressure as well as an attacking presence.
The 4-3-3 has worked wonders in Serie A, which is a mystery to me, considering the old adage of locking up the box and playing ten men behind the ball. What is even more intriguing is the lack of balance our Rossoneri consistently have on the pitch, yet still manage to get results. A good 4-3-3, in the modern era, is built around a strong CM who can tackle, intercept passes, and provide an outlet and link from defense to attack. Pirlo is just not that type of player, and I feel his struggles are directly related to this issue. This is magnified when he is playing Ambro and Seedorf, who offer a bit more of the defense/offense balance that is needed, leaving Pirlo as the odd man out when the play shifts forward and to the wings when a deep playmaker is no longer needed. Can Pirlo and Leo change the system to make this work? Sure, but the real question is does this need to happen?
If Pirlo is flanked by Rino and Ambro his value is clear, but when Seedorf and soon Beckham are alongside him, his play will continue to decline, and the need for a true CM in the mold of Essien, Toure, or D’Agostino becomes even more imperative. This balance issue is also imperative on the flanks as well. If you use the left flank as an example, with Dinho, Seedorf, and Zambro, the natural tendency for these players is to attack, with Dinho it is a must, and Clarence can hold possession but he drifts centrally which could leave Zambro higher on the pitch than needed and balance is lost. Ultimately causing the team to become weak and susceptible on the flank. This not always the case on the right with Ambro checking in behind Oddo, or Oddo tracking back (which he does do), putting the RCB under less pressure than the opposite side, which rings even more praise for Silva who has dealt with this in-balance week in and week out.
Due to personnel there is no real easy fix. You can argue that Clarence can play central with Flamini and Ambro on his sides, or even Abate, but again Pirlo is once again the odd man out; a sacrifice that after Sunday many of us are willing to make. In the attack Borriello’s balance was worth its weight in gold as he dragged defenders in and out of the box, especially Astori, who looked a man lost, and showed the pitfalls of a youthfully exuberant CB. Pippo does not offer this same type of work rate and style and the offense sputters around him, even though he is still capable of scoring the big goal; balance again becomes the issue, with Pippo being the target, instead of a cog in the three man offensive line.
So with Marseille coming to San Siro this week for the second game in four days it is hard to say what Leo’s gameplan will be. Conventional wisdom says a guarded defensive approach will be taken due to the possible knee injury of Borriello, but Leo has rebuffed conventional wisdom time and again, to his credit, so it may be more of the same, with the same personnel. Let’s just hope they can keep this heavy game pace up as the season wears on…

What a joke Inter are. Their problem is that they think they really are that good because they dominate domestically. But the truth is that they have only done so because of calciopoli. They have no chance of winning the UCL. Oh it is such laugh.

I think we should hold of on throwing Inter under the train until after we have qualified.
They do have a very tough group, in all honesty. And as much as I would enjoy watching them crash and burn in the group stages, having all 4 italian teams in the knock outs is essential for our uefa coefficients this year.
Especially since if Juve makes it, they will be knocking out Bayern Munich. Stuttgart and Unirea will be going head to head for the last spot and Unirea can sneak in, only Wolfsburg will have a real chance of getting to the next round. Depending on how Italian and German teams fare in Europa, that could be really good for us.

K, I agree with you, but either way, Inter will probably qualify, I know they have enough tricks to beat Rubin at home. So I’m glad for Italy’s chances. Juve got a boost ahead of tomorrows games with the fact that our old boy Gorcuff is not going to feature.

Well, Ranjeet, considering Barca did not have enough tricks to get by Rubin, it is no forgone conclusion. Although I think Rubin are a team that plays in a way that is better suited to Inter.

its all good lol..any predictions for tomorrows game?

I never make predictions. I consciously refuse to make predictions of the score for multiple reasons:
1. This team is bipolar, and you never know which version is going to show up.
2. If I predict we win and we do, its almost expected so it feels slightly less good.
3. If I predict we win and we lose, it feels much worse because I was expecting a win.
4. If I predict we lose and we win, I feel guilty for doubting my team.
5. If I predict we lose and we lose, it doesn’t matter because I am gonna feel shitty about the loss.So basically, no matter what I predict, one way or another, I lose. So I just stay the fuck away from making any predictions.

HAHA That was quality. No Ibra, no Messi, no problem. We gave Inter a training session, Inter give Barca one, it’s a beautiful world isn’t it?

Do you really think we’re as bad as we were when we played Sfinter Moka? But hey, diss you own team, please yourself. I’m just responding to that struggling runt son of Moratti that laughed at the ‘training session’ that we gave in the derby.

Speaking of Inter, a great quote from Ricardo Rossi…
“Would Prandelli have produced a better performance from Mourinho’s charges last night? Well, they may not wear purple but Inter believe they are aristocracy. However, sometimes a more humbling approach can pay off.
It’s doubtful that an Inter team managed by Prandelli would have strutted on to the pitch expecting to be handed the keys to the castle. He knows that they have to be earned – and all of Italy should be proud that the representative least expected to make the last 16 are across the line first.”
Don’t understatimate the power of humility and hardwork as our game looms.

Watching that Inter game yesterday I totally understand why some people think the Serie A has the same talent level as the Bundasliga.
As much as I dislike Inter, when the Serie A champs get dismantled and punched in the face like that it reflects badly on the entire league.
Inter plays with NO heart in CL matches. It seems that they can never get the big result that they need in the CL to make peoples head turn and think of them as a legitimate threat. (i.e us versus R.Madrid)
Now I really do think we can win the scudetto. We have a much better central defence and attack than them. If we can just shore up the middle of the pitch and the flanks we can…no we will…make these guyz our bitches.

Hopefully this is true…but I wouldn’t want to play him if he’s not fit all the way, because knowing our boy Marco, that would probably lead to a serious injury and a 2 month pause -_-

Actually BigDawg primera is the one that is shit thats my opinion. It makes sense when you say that calcio’s champion was raped(everyone would think what kind of crappy league is that) but on the other hand inter didnt do a thing in europe ever last time they won it it was like 40 years ago.Whenever someone meets them in CL they own them easily no matter if it is Liverpool,Valencia or Kazan. They always humiliated themselves in CL it was Milan and Juve who represented calcio. But when Barca and Real beat almost every team at home like 6-1 then you have to ask yourself what is the quality of that league.I bet fiorentina would do much better last night than inter did.And the fact that Mourinho has negative score with Inter in CL speaks for itself.

“Actually BigDawg primera is the one that is shit thats my opinion.”
I respect your opinion. But from that shit league 3 of the 4 teams representing it are heading their groups in the CL. the forth is Atletico Madrid and thats…well..Atletico. They are the 18th in the league at the moment. And at least two out of the three Euro cup spanish teams will be in the second round. Even the 10th in the liga -Vilarreal- has a chance as well. Thats all in the league that gave the birth for the best national team at the moment (There are more Valencia players there than real Madrid players, if you know what I mean). If you name the best players in the world you will find them in the liga at the moment. And before noting that they all go to Barcelona and Real Madrid, have a look at the table and the fixtures you will notice that Inter is having a much easier task in Italy to head the table than Barcelona or Real Madrid with all the big names they bought. Bilbao-whose all players are from the Basque (not even from the rest of spain), just drew against Barcelona few days ago (thats the third draw after a lucky one against Valencia who were the better team, and Osasuna).
I really dont want to get into an argument to rank the leagues as its an endless discussion thats based more on taste than anything else. Beside the fact that I follow most of the leagues more or less. My point is that calling the Liga as a shitty league is…well…not an opinion I share.

I’m more interested in being better than the French league right now if you know what I mean.
