Milan 1-Palermo 2, Wasted Chances

By: Gianfranco | September 27th, 2007

Well things have somehow managed to get worse. 4 games yielding only 3 points means that things are heading south quickly for the Euro Champs. Another ninety minutes gave another slew of missed chances on net. Scoring only one goal in an entire half of sustained pressure will not help seal and game, let alone a decent team like Palermo.

The most concerning thing about this whole run of play is only four goals in four games. The striking option is just not there, and neither is anyone picking up the slack. Pirlo had a fantastic game but after that the rest of the team trailed off quickly. The defense just looked out of place, and consistent mistakes led to Palermo goals.

I understand that the team has worked very hard and played a ton of minutes as of late, but that is why Carletto should keep shaking things up until he finds an eleven he can hang onto, or just win with. Two more games upcoming, Catania and Celtic, means things do not get much easier, but the results have to get better. Other than disgusted there is not much more that I can say.

Very very disappionted. I knew milan were going to have the same problems they had last year in attack and it is happening! We are leaking abit in the back and upfront , well we are just plain useless at the moment. We can’t always rely on Kaka and Seedorf. This is not good, ahead of celtic, it is worrying times

think we are better of than another damn draw… this may be the wake up call needed…

also, he should probably play gourcuff, instead of 2 defensive midfielders..

K I agree, if we are not scoring why not throw in some more creative midfielders instead of ball winners.

How does everyone like Borriellos hat trick?

ha! who called it! i told u we shouldve kept borriello atleast until december! although we got rid of him long before pato’s arrival… f’ing baldy.

gianfranco, if u can watch the game somewhere, or atleast try to download a torrent of it, you should. we played some really electric football, and gilardino was amazing in his link-up play (although his finishing sucked). the loss was completely undeserved, and i wouldve said the same thing about a draw.

but c’est la vie. we gotta pick up and hopefully get a great win vs. catania..

So, what exactly is the problem? The referee? Formation? Midfielders? Defenders? Crowd was too loud? Oh, it may have been the grass? Too green.

Ok, let’s put it into another perspective. In order to win, we should minimize conceding goals. So, in all competitions Milan have conceded 6 goals. But more importantly, IN ORDER TO WIN, Milan should also score more goals than the opponents and until now, Milan have scored 9 goals. Only 5 out of that 9 goals resulted in a win while the remaining 4 goals resulted in 3 draws and one lost.

What I’m trying to say here is that Milan isn’t scoring many goals. Specifically, the strikers are not productive and Milan needs them to score goals. Very simple. What’s the point of Gilardino or Inzaghi playing brilliantly creating spaces or providing excellent assists if they do not score goals as their job description requires? Instead, the ones that have been pounding the balls into the opponents’ nets have been Kaka (3 goals), Seedorf (2 goals) and one each from Ambrosini, Pirlo and Milan’s central defender, Nesta! Yeah, Inzaghi scored one in the Champions League but you get what I mean: we need to see more names from the forward/striking department provide the goals. At the moment, that’s not happening.

Undoubtedly, having all 3 points taken away while playing one of their best games this season, this is a frustrating result for Milan. Last season, at this stage of competition, Milan managed to take 11pts but after the Wednesday game, we’re still on 6pts. Got a lot of catching up to do.

I was finally able to watch the game, and have to say that I was impressed. The run of play was dynamic at times and Gila played well, but when the chips are down they have to finish. This is not horseshoes and close won’t cut, you can play an amazing game but one goal is never enough.

The team needs to regroup as unit and without a result this weekend, more specifically three points, I fear that things will start to slide rather quickly.

we’ll see. i think that gila played better, but that ain’t saying much. his job is still to score goals, and he ain’t doing it, but there were postive signs, so maybe he will break out of it, soon (i.e. this weekend).
when is the preview for the catania match going by the way.
