Milan 0 – Arsenal 2, The beginning of the End?
By: Gianfranco | March 4th, 2008There really isn’t much I can say right now that will make me feel any better, in fact a review or match recap in my eyes is a futile exercise that may actually only make me feel worse. As I sit here and watch the game a second time around it really hasn’t sunk into my head that this game could be possibly end two-nil. No team really established and no team really let up, in fact it was a great game with a lot of end to end action, and a fair amount of world class play. But when the game is played at such a high pace, and high level of class the mistakes become glaring and apparent, and the missed chances make your stomach twist and turn.

I do want to start out saying that Maldini should hold his head proud because if this was his last game in the Champions League, and most likely is, it was by no means a poor performance on his part. His flank run when he nutmegged Eboue and cut a perfect pass made me smile and wonder where his legs find that skill. A bit of vintage Maldini in the fading moments of his career, and the sinking feeling I have now is more for Paolo than for anyone else.
I will also say that Pato showed his youth tonight, he played a game that by his high standards was subpar. He made decisions that made me cringe, and was offside more than Pippo, and we all know how hard that is. Kaka was also clearly not 100% percent and it showed coupled with Pirlo’s inability to move into the attack and it really made this game as open as it could get.
I am by no means angry with Arsenal, or with the effort put into place tonight by the Rossoneri but when the cards were down and the chips were on the table, Arsenal wanted this game and took it. The announcer said that young teams make a name for themselves in big games and big competitions and Arsenal could not have picked a better stage. The first English team to defeat Milan at San Siro, and in effect ended a strong run of play for an aging team, and making a poor season even worse.
I am not going to beat a dead horse here and say that the bench lacks depth and we need more health, I am really just exhausted. With that said I really don’t have all that much to say anymore, I read all the comments and have to say everyone here really helped in making this loss a bit more palatable, but a loss is a loss and I am going to need a day or two to really let it sink in.

moka, check out the Milan Meet and Greet like 2 posts ago. You’ll learn everything you ever wanted to know about our posse.
Ro, does he really not like it? Aw, too bad, I usually pen awesome nicknames. I usually just call him Gian though. Easier.

My transfer market list. first we need to do whatever we need to sign Benzema. so after they reject our 40 million offer, we go after Amuari. Then Toni, After that Drogba then Sheva. dont know if i missing anyone, but id rather start with young strikers rather than +30. for the past period ive been going against Drogba even more, first of all he’s 31, second im a bit skeptic, it took him 2 seasons to settle at chelsea. Benzema has the perfect characteristic, when i see him play at Lyon and receives balls from Juninho and anyone, i can imagine the whole milan team around him and sending him balls, and he’d do good with Pato. and after Euro 08 his price and points in the market will go sky high.
Midfielders, we’re pretty good. Kaka, Seedorf, Righio, Pirlo & Ambro. all i want is Gourcuff to play more.
Defense, this is where our transfer guru must come in and do their job. especially Leonardo, thats whats he’s good at. if possible get Alves. no one sells their good defenders, and if they do for a very hight price, and no one would pay that much for a defender.
GK, i dont know, i still want Amellia. i know Kalac has been great, but i still feel we need someone else. wont be the worst thing if he stayed.
after reading the news today, looks like the Milan bosses got the idea and are willing to spend. although they said the exact samething in the past 2 off-seasons. i am sure that Milan will make the CL with out a doubt.

Dear Mr. Galliani,
Per your recent loss in the Champions League, may I direct your attention to the discussions which took place in this very forum between Christmas of 2007 and January 31st, 2008 (the close of the transfer window.) Here you will find suggestion upon suggestion of players who may have helped the Milan cause, in this, our darkest hour.
Out of respect, I will refrain from saying, “We told you so.”
Sincerely,
Daveps- Who am I kidding? WE TOLD YOU SO!

I said it before the match and I stick by it now too, Ancelotti should have had the guts (and foresight) to play Gourcuff and drop Inzaghi. This would have left Kaka to roam free instead of being in two minds.

And notice the goals teams score against Milan. They’re so soft. Give aways in midfield, a bad lapse here.

Guys my next post will give us a chance to pose our own choices for changes, it should be up tonight.
As for the nickname, G has been a standard for most of my life and is even shorter than “Big G”…but then again nickames are given not chosen…

lol
on a lighter note, i wanted to say awwwwwwwwww to Bonnie, Hana and Ro when i saw you guys consoling yourselves as well as picking up on attraction for some of the Arsenal players!
But def good to back each other up during this rough time.
But lets not forget, we are bigger than this set back, i only just plucked up enough courage to look at Ro’s Maldini pic today, gutting to see it.
I remember him at the Euro final of 2000 and i was gutted for him then (and the previous world cup in 94) (God, why am i even bringing this up?) this new image will always stay with me and i think goes to teach a valuable life lesson;
………no matter how perfect or deserved an outcome is, sometimes life just is that way, Why? we dont know. Its just life.I hope to have kids one day and maybe i will use Maldini as example for them for those times when they possibly lose out on something?

Forza Milan folks.

Haha, you gotta do what you gotta do Avia. I’m glad you found it amusing. (Though I will always hold that our team is the most gorgeous team in football, no doubt)
With a loss like this, some people get wasted, some people break their TVs, some people cry, and some people inexplicably admire the opposition. Or some combination of the aforementioned. But I one hundred percent agree, I love how supportive we are of each other, and kudos to people who aren’t even Milan fans sending their sympathies. Clearly the whole “Milan Family” gimmick isn’t just a gimmick, and I think we’ve shown that with our solidarity. It’s certainly made the loss much easier on me.
Ditto what you said about Il Capitano…sometimes life just doesn’t make sense and things like this happen. The response to the situation is more important than the event itself, you know? Bless him for all that he’s given us and the world of football as a whole.

I kinda agree with you avia. but my kids wont only learn about maldini and milan, it will be in there blood. after all, my first kid will be named Maldini, second kid, Maldini 2, third kid Maldini 3 and so on. and no one will be able to say the word Inter without following it by Merda. im gonna make them better than that Jake kid. I actually tried this with my baby half brother, i use to try to brain wash him, when i ever i say Milan he must cheer, when he see’s a milan logo he must kiss it lol. eventually it got a bit serious and my dad’s wife told me to stop it lol. but no one will stop me with my kids, muhahaa =)

Fets, have I ever told you how hilarious you are? Because you are. =] As much as I adore my Rossoneri, your sheer passion is what I aspire to.
Inter jersey in the toilet = hahaha classic. Almost as classic as naming all of your children Maldini. Way to show your baby brother the ropes at an early age.

lol, thats my duty and purpose in life. live by the Milan name and take the Inter name down to the ground.

I have a 4 year old cousin who I’m molding to be a Milanista. I brought her a Pippo shirt back from Italy and she wears it every time she watches games with me. She knows our favourite player is ‘Tuso (She couldn’t pronounce Gattuso when she first started watching) and she can always point him out on the field. She notices he yells and falls a lot. She’s also partial to Kaka and Kalac, because he wears yellow (she also likes the refs when they wear yellow). When my Romanista best friend is around, she knows to say “I hates Totti”. I may not have children, but I’m doing my best to raise a full-blooded Milanista!
(And Hana, our team is definitely always the prettiest – though we do take a hit when the Captain retires)

Fet you had me rolling on the floor…Hana he is hilarious!!! I think you get the best award for making us all laugh in a time where we surely need it.
By the way I’m stealing that picture and putting it up as my background on my desktop.
My brother who’s 3…I tried to brainwash him also but he’s a little hard headed the italian in him…and he told me no you do it when I was telling him to say the players names.

glad i can make someone smile =)
and yah we should breathe the milan rossonerri spirit in all kids. samething happened with me to some extent and i nurtured and made it something bigger since i was a kid. a main thing to do when i get a kid is to milanize him/her.
a friend of mine in torino, italy had a new born, first thing he did he was put a juve jersey on him. even though he’s wearing the wrong jersey, still the right steps.

haha that’s great!!!
And your right to bad he’s a juventino…if you ever see him you have to brain wash him to betray everything your friend enstilled in him and make him a milanista…lol jk i’m not that cruel…I realize how hard it is to brain wash kids…unless the kid is really gullable it’s going to take some time.
Fet for kids names you could put Paolo Maldini (insert last name here) Maldini (insert last name here) and Maldini paolo (insert last name here) or you could do like michael jackson and just put Paolo Maldini (insert last name here) 1 2 and 3

yah lol, Maldini #’s is the one to go with. and all wearing maldini jersey + ill make customized maldini masks, okay that a bit way too much. im sure if Il Capitano read this stuff, he’ll probably run as far as away as he can from us, a bunch of crazy Maldini lunatics. but Paolo if you’re reading, Tu sei tutta la mia vitaaaaa.

I did warn you after the first match at the Emirates.
But I thought the attitude of your players and fans at the end of a wonderful ‘end to end match’ was very commendable.
I thought Nesta was on the ground rather too much during the game, tho’. The referee was a complete amateur.
You’ll be back.

Lol Fet that’s not going to scare him away or anything…You know by Proclaiming your undying love for him…lol jk :p

oh believe me ro i will scare him. i freaked Ringhio lol. while we were taking our group picture at the gala, me and some guy were behind Rino (the photographer took over 5 minutes to come over) while waiting Rino waiting and just standing there (on a side note, its just weird, Rino was looking at the big screen, and they had the italy-germany game highlights on, he was looking at himself going crazy and just smiling) so, first me and the guy started to whisper to Ringhio “Forza Lotta, Vincere, Non Ti Laceremo Mai, ale milan ale…..”, then things started to get weird, i started rubbing his bald head lool he’s just look at me and smile, and it wasnt those quick rub, rather just rubbing it for a while lool. i was so so close to kissing it. that guy also dared me, i was gonna go on a limp and tell him, “hey, rino. if you ever think about going…*cough* fannok, ill be your man” lol, but by then he’ll either run far far away or beat the crap out of me.

Wow…Your pretty brave there Fet
I would freak out just to see the guy and your sitting there almost making remarks about turning him gay and rubbing his head…You definetely have guts that’s for sure…If I were you I would have been afraid of him skinning me alive with his bare hands…haha lol
But I wonder what he’s like off the pitch you know…what he’s like behind the scenes with his family.
