Livorno 0 – Milan 0
By: Gianfranco | September 13th, 2009Fortunately I missed the game on Saturday. I had to Coach in the local Nutmeg Tournament in an effort to retain the silverware I had won last season. Much like Milan however my boys were not up to the task of the weekend. I actually see a lot of parallels with my squad and AC Milan. Both teams have lost integral players, both teams have not added any players to fill in the gaps, and neither team looks to have gelled on the pitch. The difference is, I can’t add players or control the loss of players to the next age bracket, but I can fix the gelling issue, not sure I can say the same for Leonardo.
Yes the game was on the road, a task that is not always easy, but after a season were many clamored that Carletto had no concept when it came to beating and playing against Serie A minnows, his successor doesn’t seem to fall to far from the tree. My initial reaction to the lineup was that Leo was resting some players after International break and in preparation for the upcoming game against Marseille. Oddo in for Zambrotta and Pirlo on the bench, but as the game ticked away, an ineffective Ronaldinho was removed for Pirlo and new striker KJH couldn’t find the net and left much to be desired in his debut.
When you don’t get a chance to see the game you rely on post match recaps on the many websites across the web. But after you read one or two and the common theme throughout are words like ineffective, lackluster, and incapable, it is hard to not to feel frustration for what should have positive result for this team. I can’t say that AC Milan will be able to get points against teams like Inter, Juventus, and Fiorentina, so a game like this one against Livorno was a must. An effort to gain confidence prior to Tuesday’s game and a bit of eraser for the last game against Inter, and instead we are still left asking questions. We have no real formation, we have no leader, and we have no real plan to fix it.
It is a defeatists’ view to say that the season is already over taking into consideration what your own expectations were for this club. For me a top half finish would be a dream, with top four the greatest possible outcome. With this in mind the next three weeks will make or break my goals, and sadly will probably make or break Leonardo’s coaching career as well.
I chose to refrain from saying a word on Ronaldinho here but need to say my piece, I didn’t see the game, but I think Ro said it best…”Dinho sucks.” I certainly won’t say I told you so, but it is painfully evident that this team needs to move forward without him to have any real chance. Every weel he has less and less defense, interesting how many fanboys are left at this point…When the going got tough in the late nineties Milan leaned hard on the old guard of Albertini, Maldini, and Costacurta…not sure who will take that mantle now, but much like fans, the player’s who step up now are the real soul of this club.

Im for gattuso pirlo abate dorf pato KJH.Cant wait to see how we will play without dinho. What i dont get is are they doing trainings with dinho as trequartista and then base their performance on his play in regular game? And then he sucks and they cant make a single move(like vs Livorno first half)? If Leo wants to continue trying to make old dinho maybe its better to put him as classic striker?

pera he doesnt seem to have the mobility to be a classic striker, frankly he is like an anvil out there so as a trequartista he can recieve and pass without so much attacking movement, that is the rational I would think Leo is using…

I vote for Dorf (defensive playmaker, at least he can hold onto the ball, and can still cut a good pass, sometimes) and Pirlo as trequartista. We won’t lose any of the speed that we had with Dinho, as we didn’t have any speed with Dinho, and it might re-invigorate Pirlo.
If that fails, then 7 defenders, and Boriello, KJH and Pato up top and just lob long balls and hope that Boriello or KJH can get a knock down for Pato (or other target man) to get a shot off.
I don’t think this is a season for classy football. Just get the points any which way we can.

Ian, it is funny you say that because many fans thought Leo would bring beautiful football to Milan neglecting to remember that Milan has more often than not played tactically precise football and rarely beautiful…like hoping for something that never existed in the first place!?

I’m not a R80 fan, but he shouldn’t be benched after the first two games… I’ll give him a month to prove himself

benching him now would kill any sort of drive he may have, and we can’t afford to lose anybody when we have a squad that is struggling to begin with.!!!Posted from

we should forsake the fullbacks and just use them as wingers and get them to track back when defending. 3-5-2 (offensive) and 5-3-2 (defensive)
Silva Nesta Kaladze/Bonera
Gattuso Flamini
Zambrotta/Abate Pirlo Janks
Pato KJHPosted from

Jape, he hasn’t had 2 games (3 actually), he’s really had a season plus 3 games. Out of those games how many has he been effective in?
Pato came in and was effective straight away, so if he has a bad game now and again he is allowed to. Kaka came in and was effective straight away, so he was allowed the odd crap game. In my opinion anyway. They earned their stripes.
Dinho came in straight away and sucked. He had a couple of decent games, but never convinced, nor does he still. How many 2nd chances are we going to give him.
I wanted him to perform back to his best. He was great to watch back in the day. I fear he’s lived the good life too long, and just can’t be bothered with it anymore. I’m sure in training he does great little flicks and shit, but he’s up against our defenders. With the exception of Nesta and Thiago Silva, there isn’t much in the way of defending going on with the rest of them. When he gets into a real game those deft touches that he might be trying are punished.
I also think that far too much pressure is put on him. The management think he is great and will continue to be great in the future. I think us fans have just now become disillusioned with him (and any other player, eg. Dorf) and anything that goes wrong with them they get jeered. The jeers when Dinho came off were deafening on Saturday. Unfortunately, both he and the Management have dug a rather large and deep hole on this one, and I don’t see any way out of it. Save for benching him and selling him at the earliest opportunity. Its not good for him being at Milan and not good for Milan having him.

“benching him now would kill any sort of drive he may have, and we can’t afford to lose anybody when we have a squad that is struggling to begin with.!!!”
jape said it best as right now it feels like ALL HANDS ON DECK!!!!!!!!!!
This is going to be a long long and torturous season i feel, like you Gian, im hoping for a Spaletti xmas!

Saturday’s jeers were at Livorno and thus may be variously interpreted, don’t you think?

The view from outside: the livorno game wasn’t so terrible. Milan had more posession and more shots on goal … all the squad really needs is some shooting practice. Only something like a third of your shots were on target. That is the real problem. Milan made chances, they just couldn’t capitolize on them. Fix that and you are back in business.

The hell with beautiful football and joga bonito its not real its not practical.Im all for wining every game 1:0 with just hard work and good tactics.Thats football. If you want something else go to circus.
“I don’t think this is a season for classy football. Just get the points any which way we can.”
EXACTLY!Remember how we got “ugly” points at start of the last season.I would like the same thing for this season.Until berlu opens his fat wallet.Posted from

Jo it isn’t that simple. Were the chances quality? Were they rushed? Was someone else in a better position to have a crack? These are all questions of movement and tactics that lead to “missed” shots. You can knock the ball on frame all day everday but if you are not putting yourselves in positions for quality chances you end with up this 30 shots on goal six on frame business…

it was in fact rather typical of Milan’s matches over the past year. game starts and almost immediately the opposing team starts to tee off on Milan’s goal. on the other end Milan struggles to even get a shot off as each possession seems to quickly end with a slightly off pass or a strong challenge by the opposition. some adjustment occurs and Milan does a little better in the 2nd half, but overall one must conclude that the other team seemed to want it a hell of a lot more…

The best example was ,if you remember, game vs Atalanta when we won 1:0 and i dont know how.

How some people still defend Dinho baffles me.

I dont know, I have never been convinced by Spaletti.
The sad part here is that, poor Leo, for all intensive purposes could have been a great coach in the future but was pretty much thrown under the bus too early for him to grow into a great coach.

Is it true that Milan has the oldest team in the world?

K I agree, I dont think Leo is really all that much at fault, but he will certainly be the first to go. The question will he go down fighting and trash managment for setting him up like this or will he go down without a peep? Personally I feel like Tassotti or Baresi should be next up and see if those old blood veterans cant shake some sense into managment and bring this team back to the way it should be.

Gian, that would be facilitating the same fate for Tassotti and Baresi. The next coach needs to be of a *shudder* Jose Mourninho or a Guus Hiddink variety. Someone that is wanted by other clubs and has more leverage than Leo, Tassotti and Baresi with the management.
We need someone who Berlu will listen to.
Hmmmm… Well, Dinho is finished anyway, maybe he could be coach? He is the only guy Berlu seems capable of listening anyway..

So where are all those people that when we were losing in pre-season said…”IT’S JUST PRE-SEASON, we’ll be fine when the regular season roles around.”
WHERE R U PEOPLE???? SHOW URSELVES 2 ME!!!
People who think pre-season results aren’t a pre-cursor to regular season performances haven’t paid much attention to our last 3 pre-seasons and are pretty thick headed.
People who are expecting great CL performances (this year) because CL is our natural habitat have been smoking the same natural substance as Galiani.
We’ll either draw or scrape by with a 2-1 win. I predict it won’t be pretty either way.

@ Ian, I’m just saying that he has only been in his current position (with all the factors, on and off the field) for a couple of games… i don’t like him all that much, I didn’t want him at Milan, but we have him, and we are currently in a dismal state as a club.
— so why not get behind one of our own.Posted from

It has been the AC agenda for over 7 years to bring in poor over-the-hill recruits. They brought rivaldo to Milan (after his prime at barcelona). They brought in ronaldo from madrid (after he was injured, fat, and crippled). Now they have brought in Ronaldinho, who is obviously past his best years. A big-fat, old and physically unfit “past-his-best-years”, who was never a team player at Barca, but relied on individual skill and dribbling. Now that he cannot run, what makes anyone think that he can contribute?
R.I.P Milan. We should all sing Kumbaya or Auld Lang Syne for our once famed team. What a long rebuilding process it will be. Hopefully it wont be as bad as Fatih Terim’s Milan Sides, or the Zaccheroni disaster era. We may have to wait for Maldini’s son and ancelotti’s son to come up through the milan youth ranks.
