Thursday Milan Musings: A Little Bit of Logic

By: Gianfranco | July 17th, 2008

Day three of the Ronaldinho era, and as I write this post I am watching Milan vs. ManU in the 07 CL semifinal. I always watch this game when I want to feel better because well it is everything that is good about Milan in 90 minutes. Nesta, Paolo, Kaka and Seedorf tearing it up, hell even Dida was on his game this match, though he effed up in the first leg.

What I still am having a hard time with though is no longer Ronaldinho, but the Milan management and their inability to evolve and progress into the modern era of football. I will say that I want Dinho to succeed, I want to be proved wrong, and I want him to return to the top of the world and take the club with him, but you have to understand my skepticism, we have benn burned before and I don’t feel all that much like being burned again.

My major gripe with the management and transfer gurus is that they don’t seem to understand the needs of the club anymore and in fact would rather make a big splash signing to shut us, the fans, up for a moment and help lull us into forgetting what in fact this team really needs. I want to do a little exercise to help manifest my point and I am going to do so with no names to help really hammer the point home, and remove us from any preconceived notions regarding any specific players.

Milan went into this offseason with an aging team with the oldest position being defense and making its way forward to the strikers. There was also a need for a proven GK to fill the hole left by the former number one. So we will start with that, instead of buying an expensive GK, Milan returned one that they owned, who had success before, therefore making an intelligent move. That leaves them with the need for a defender, player D, and a seasoned capable striker, that we will call player S.

The current roster was midfield heavy, yet we decided to added player M to add depth and youth, and one can consider this a smart move all around based on price and availability. So we continue to move forward in the transfer market and begin courting Player S, neglecting to even address the need for Player D.

Player S becomes available but not without a price and “small” amount of risk. Player D is not even on the radar, but the club has a hankering for a new player, Player R. Player R is not addressing the needs of the club and does not come for that much less of price than Player S, yet Milan abandon all hope for player S, pursue and succeed in the purchase of player R. Leaving the need for both Player S and Player D unaddressed, now to make matters worse, continue without names (no preconceived notions) player R had fallen out of favor at his old club and was not even playing and the end of the season while Player S had the best campaign of his career. What do you do then given those circumstances?? You would be hard pressed to pick Player R, no?

Know we all know that by looking at it this way a rational person would have to go ahead and choose player S. He addresses a need of the club and has more upside, based on form correct?

Now if you add in the players that we all I know am talking about, for some reason Ronaldinho gets the benefit of the doubt and joins the club despite the fact that he doesn’t address the needs of the club, or help the club in the long term. I did this to show that if you had to make this determination without and background and history of players it makes even harder to swallow the Dinho move when you look at the needs of the club. Imagine your significant other sending you to the grocery with a list containing milk, eggs, and bread. Yet you decide to come home with a pizza, what does she say to you? You will probably get a funny look no? Welcome to the look that has been plastered on my face for three days…

Again, I wanted to do this to just show how disappointed I am in the lack of real intelligent decisions from really intelligent guys who know what they are doing at least 75% of the time. I will also say again that I want to be proved wrong, I want to be proved every single Sunday in the Serie A, and every single game in the UEFA Cup, but right now I am still not convinced and it will take a fair amount of time for me to get there…

I agree 100% Gianfranco, Italy isn’t declining, we just aren’t transitioning properly. Cannavaro’s injury turned out to be a good thing, in the end, by giving Chiellini his chance to star. Honestly, with our impotent attack and spineless coach we didn’t have much of a chance of winning the Euros, and it got Donadoni out of the seat. Of course my sympathies to Cannavaro.

I think Chiellini is Maldini-esque, his positioning, backline versatility and particularly his slidetackles remind me a lot of Paolo.

I am sorry, Alessio, but I have to disagree. Maldini is soooooo much more graceful than Chiellini. Maldini can (or at least could) strip a ball from a forward without them even realizing it. Chiellini comes at you for the ball - you will know it, there will be bruises. Also, there is a sort of lightness about Maldini that Chiellini just does not have. No grace. Chiellini is fast but not agile (in my opinion). Not that he is a bad player - in fact my very favorite defender is also a graceless oaf. They have their place. When I think of Maldini-esque defenders, I think of our very own Maicon. But he is not Italian.

Also, this is just my feeling about Chiellini. I will, of course, take your word that his positioning is as you say.

hmm … I thought Santacroce is a leftback?

How good is this de Ceglie guy? I heard he’s voted by fans to start at leftback for Juve?

Capunk, De Ceglie is very promising and better than Molnaro. Obviously anyone will be superior to Molinaro, but Ranieri likes to complicate things.

He said that Molinaro was one of the BEST PERFORMERS last season. I don’t know what kind of performances Ranieri was talking about, but I guarantee you they were not football related.

Plus Maldini was always willing to instigate attacks from the back. Chiellini did well with his defensive work at the Euros but often just hacked the ball forward when he had the ball. That’s a far cry from Maldini and Nesta indeed.

And if Italy are not in a bit of a decline why else would they’re #1 choice defender had been a veteran who isn’t even first choice at his club until injuries to a couple of ‘foreigners’ compel it, Panucci?

Alessio, this is a tough crowd when comparing to Maldini. Maldini is the most elegant, cleanest, tactically sound defender the world has ever seen. I am not saying Chiellini cant get there but he has a long long way to go, and he hasnt even scratched the offensive surface.

Same goes for Sergio Ramos, sure he can bombard the right flank and go screaming into the other teams penalty area, but until that guy is clinically stripping the ball from guys like Messi, Henry, and Villa, he will always be a subpar wingback to Maldini.

Ramos is streets ahead of Chiellini and most others in the world though. He’s not easy to beat, don’t worry about that GF.

Kaka has set his heart on a shock transfer to Chelsea, according to his advisor.

A report this morning claims the FIFA World Player of the Year was the subject of discussions between the Barclays Premier League club and the Brazilian’s current employers, AC Milan, this week.

The Italians secured the signing of the 26-year-old’s international team-mate Ronaldinho on Wednesday despite their well-publicised financial difficulties, and Kaka’s personal assistant Diogo Kotscho is adamant all parties involved now want the deal to go through.

If it did, Kaka would be reunited with Blues manager Luiz Felipe Scolari who handed him a Brazil debut in 2002 at the age of 20, and then included him in the squad that went on to win the World Cup that year.

‘Real Madrid offered 90 million euros (£71million) last summer and Milan did not even think about the bid,’ Kotscho told The Guardian.

‘This time is different. This is the first time we feel that a deal will definitely happen.

‘Because of the situation Milan are in at the moment, the deal is good for all parties involved.

‘The move would represent a significant increase in Kaka’s salary, on top of the 10% transfer fee that goes straight to the player anyway - some 15 million euros (£12million).

‘Chelsea are the club to be at right now. They are building a team to win everything.’

Any deal for arguably the planet’s best player seems certain to break the world record transfer fee of £46million set when Real Madrid signed Zinedine Zidane from Juventus in 2001.

I dont know about that A, remember I play the devil’s advocate and look at things logically, and to have Kaka go and leave us only with Dinho is a step down of epic proportions! If letting Kaka go and getting say Cesc and Giovinco, or players of that caliber, I can swallow. But selling a 25 year old brazilian who is lighting fast for a portly brazilian who is close to going over the hill is way to much for swallow or like!!

But before that he said :

Vice-president Adriano Galliani in fact touched on the issue of a possible sale just under two weeks ago, ruling out the notion despite their debt. “The fans should be happy, as all we’d need to do in order to wipe out or debts is sell Kaka and Andrea Pirlo,” he explained. “Instead they won’t move, so if that’s not a show of love for this side, I don’t know what is.”

    On July 8 :

He said: “I can confirm that Chelsea declared their interest in Kaka.

“But I told them that Milan were not interested in selling him and I stopped everything before they could make any offer.

“So, I don’t know whether they would have offered £80million.”

Great…my stomach is upside down and I feel like I’m going to puke…just another thing I need to worry about…I hate Galliani with a passion! I can’t believe he would think about selling our star player AT ALL! I hate hate hate the transfer window! And I can’t believe we have that stupid thing (because I don’t want to use other words) as a VP! If we sell Kaka…we can so forget about trying to win anything…because Kaka is the one that connects the ball to the front and yeah we have ‘dinho but he’s not proven yet! We don’t know how he’s going to do. I just don’t think even 100 mil is a smart idea we will be left with a gaping hole in our team because selling Kaka would be like signing your soul over to the devil.

I now am depressed and don’t want to do anything

MILAN - With regard to statements published today by English daily “The Guardian”, Vittorio Mentana, director of communications rossonera, reaffirms “Kakà is absolutely not for sale”.

From the official website. Honestly I have a hard time believing Chelsea ever made a bid at all.
