Thursday Milan Musings

By: Gianfranco | April 10th, 2008

There was a time when this fixture on the Serie A calendar was as good a game as it gets. Both teams fought tooth and nail for the scudetto for many years and I still the great matchups with Zidane squaring off against Paolo and the Rossoneri’s defense, or Davids owning the center circle against the likes of Albertini and Boban. This game also brings to mind one of the greatest days in my Milan history which saw Milan triumph over Juve at Old Trafford for their sixth Champions League trophy.

The game may not be as glamorous as it once was with newly promoted Juve and depleted Milan, but the importance of the tie is just the same. Juve is in third place barely ahead of the Viola and Milan are toiling a bit further back hopelessly clawing for a spot in the Champions League. Glamour or not this game is big change for both teams to get points and achieve their season goal of a top four finish.

Believe it or not, their still one player whose heart beats a little faster with this game getting closer, and that is the living legend, Il Capitano, Paolo Maldini. This is just another small reason why this guy is so freaking special, he is almost 40 but a simple game against Juve still gets his competitive juices flowing. As long as that spirit is still there Paolo, play on.

Excited or not though Paolo will have his work cut out for him as his usual running mates are out of action. Kaladze and Nesta suspended, Oddo and Janks injured, leaving a potential back four of Cafu, Bonera, Maldini, Favalli. Just think five years ago (outside of Bonera), that back four would have been murderous and fear; now it leaves me wondering how many goals the Rossoneri will have to score to assure a victory. This backline is not terrible, but its not great, but if Bonera can repeat last week’s performance, and Maldini is Maldini, things aren’t all that bad. (wow that was optimistic).

So we have addressed the defense now lets move forward. Kaka and Pato will be in the the lineup, and I fully expect Carletto to employ the xmas tree, much akin to last weekend with Pato in place of Pippo. This is OK as Carletto will most likely play cautiously away from home. Rino has looked a bit injured as of late, and I am wondering if he never quite recovered from the quick Arsenal return all that time ago. With that being said it is best if Carletto puts the most abled body squad he has out there, and takes a good read on the fatigue of certain guys. I mentioned it last week but Ambro has poured heart and soul into every game and I am worried he can’t keep up this pace. Gourcuff should be ready for an appearance in a few different capacities on Saturday.

Regardless a win is needed and I expect to see all my offside tifosi here in full force on Saturday so we can get through this together, here is a little video, enjoy the memories

THURSDAY’s MUSINGS

-You can shout and I know you will, but I am beginning to rethink the Sheva situation. For Sheva to come out and plead for Carletto to take him back it truly a show of shear desire for him to return to the club. I do not even know what to liken it to, this guy is pleading to come back, he wants to come back, and I think he believes a return is the only way to resurrect his career. With desire like that how can I say no to a man who is easily one of the best forward this club has ever seen. The brass is willing to keep Ronaldo on payroll who has never once shown an ounce of passion for this club, and has even stated countless times that his rehab should be done at home, and not here.

I know he left, and he did so for terrible reasons, but he has not even been given a chance in his two season at Chelsea, I can’t even say that he sucks because I haven’t seen him on the pitch in ages. As I type this I am watching a rerun of CL game against Inter, and Sheva is in all his glory, I really do miss those days. I miss knowing there was striker upfront who could score at any given moment, I miss seeing him streaking down the middle, and I miss the way he made everyone around him better. If its Dinho or Sheva, then let it be Sheva, and if getting Sheva allows the squad to get stronger in the back and through the middle then let it be Sheva. But please don’t break the bank for a guy who turned his back, make him earn any money he is going to get.

-The Dinho saga continues and I am beginning to think it is detrimental to my health. At work today I kept checking site after site because someone said a contract was close. We all know how I feel about him, and I don’t want him, even on my first day I gave him no love. I ripped into the has-been Brazilian. This team is not a Brazilian rest home!

-A one time Milan target, Amauri is in hot and heavy talks with Juve. I was never sold on Amauri but I hate that this team doesn’t even have a shot at signing some players because they don’t put their hat in the ring. I am sick of Milan’s gentlemanly approach to transfers, the transfer world is no longer about taking agents out to dinner and making sure no one’s feelings are hurt. The transfer world is cut throat dog eat dog, and only the strong survive. Milan have lost signings in the final hour on two many occasions in the past few seasons, this team is not everyone whipping boy!! Henry, Zlatan, Torres, Suazo…That list is already heavy with names, and I do not want to add more!

-On a side note congratulations to Fiorentina who moved on in the UEFA Cup today. They are the only side left in Europe from Serie A and are carrying the flag quite nicely. A good win, and a real chance at taking the next step for the young Viola squad. A few weeks ago I read something about Prandelli saying he wanted to be Fiorentina’s Alex Ferguson.
null
The thought of it made me smile, and if anyone has a team set up for that kind of success that its this man, but enough Viola admiration, they must lose the rest of their Serie A games if we want a chance at the 4 spot.

how hard is it to get amelia???we are the only top italian team in need of a goalkeeper. if galliani speaks once the deal is done. so its more in the hands of galliani.

What a great site. This is my first post and let me just say -what an incredible video! The music provided an incredible element to an already exciting finish. I’ve got to say that seeing Sheva in the video has got me thinking about how great it would be for him to come back home -so to speak. When it comes to making a choice regarding Dinho or Sheva, my head says Dinho but my heart says Sheva. We probably won’t have to speculate about making a choice because it appears that both are all but signed.

Eww, moka. There’s no need to bring algebra into this, okay? ;) Haha, but really, I’ve been really enjoying this healthy debate as well, very interesting and valid points people are bringing up here.

Shehan, there’s no denying that Ronaldinho has a buttload of natural talent, and it’s not necessarily that I think he magically lost it all and can’t become the incredible player he was at Barca in his prime. I personally am at a loss as to where to play him in our system. Out and out striker? A trequarista? Kaka’-esque second striker behind the front two? Again, I think it’s very important that we remember that fit is almost as important as form/class. I think one Marco Borriello at Genoa has proved that with his insane form this year that we didn’t even get a glimmer of during his time at Milan.

But I will one hundred percent agree with you on one thing: if our cards fall right, Milan is TOTALLY gonna be the party that rocks the body next year. It makes me giddy just thinking about it.

thos of you saying that dinho has lost his edge, but want shevchenko back, why aren’t you applying the same argument to him?
he will be 32 next season ffs and even if he does ressurect his career with milan, do you know how long it will take? a player who has been sitting on the bench for the past two seasons will be picking out pine splinters out of his ass for the first couple of months, and te older that player is, the more time he will need to get his form back. once he does, how long will that last? until he’s 33? well, that gives us half a season of good performance. is that really worth the trouble of bringing him back?

here’s what we stand to lose: the few months it will take for sheva to get his form back, we will be using up one of our starting eleven spots on an old, struggling player. our results will probably suffer because of this because he won’t be putting them in as is expected of his position, but also, we will stunt the growth of a player like paloschi, who needs playing time to develop. we could loan him out instead, but teams who don’t co-own a player don’t like to give him as much playing time as those they do. marco borriello couldn’t get any playing time at reggina when he was just loaned.

anyway, we need a striker who can play as a target man, holding the ball up, and most importantly, put the ball in the net. someone like luca toni. i would much rather get him than shevchenko, who doesn’t offer us anything that pato doesn’t except experience.

Ideally, there’s a whole bunch of strikers we can name that would be a better option, but think about it.. think realistically.. think Galliani and Silvio.. not the wisest in the transfer market.. Personally, I’d prefer Berbatov over Sheva, for the reasons of form and age. Berbatov is on fire, and it’ll be faster for him to settle than for Sheva to re-settle.. and plus, what’s Mr. Sheva gonna do about Mrs. Sheva and baby Sheva?

So I won’t be able to watch the match today (could be a good thing.. lol) b/c I have an exam tonight (chemistry.. eww, makes algebra look beautiful).. soo fill me in on what happens..

P.S. I want Flamini to come! :D .. has he renewed yet?

    I wish

    Gazzetta dello Sport:

FLAMINI - Shevchenko could arrive from London together with Mathieu Flamini, the Arsenal midfielder much admired by Milan. And following the Gunners’ elimination from the Champions League, negotiations could begin soon. Juve are also known admires of the Frenchman and, with similar offers on the table, participation in next season’s Champions League could be the key in persuading the player to join either club.

hey, Pato promised us CL next year..

Why don’t Milan just get Berbatov, Flamini and Sheva? It’s more economical.. They can travel as a family.. Ever though of that Galliani? Huh?

i am not sure about your logic there, moka. sounds as though you are saying that because galliani and berlusconi are crap in transfers i should want sheva? i really don’t understand your post because that doesn’t change the fact that it is a lousy transfer.

by the way, i am from mississauga too, but i live and work in france. sure am glad to leave that shithole.

Ronaldinho is a done deal according to eurosport. Add Flamini, Borriello, Sheva, Zambrotta, a centre back and goali and the squad looks very good.

My logic is that I doubt that anyone is impressed with Galliani’s lack of action in the transfer market (Pato aside) over the past few years. If we can get Berbatov, that would be great, but if not, then I don’t see a better *realistic* alternative than Sheva. Key word; realistic. What are our options vtec?

And LOL.. why do you think Mississauga is a shithole?

it’s just a boring suburb. you can’t get anywhere without a car because there is no down town. it just sucks.

we have many other options, ronaldinho being just one of the many better ones available. luca toni, an italian, is another good one. berbatov, mario gomez, even amauri are better. there are a bunch of other quality strikers available that are all better than the current (and future) sheva. all of those are realistic, too, perhaps berbatov being the least likely because of the attention he will receive from english clubs.

i would be very happy with a transfer market of
in: ronaldinho (reported 30, but should be 20M), zambrotta (5-10M), frey (gila), flamini (free), toni (10-15M)
out: 1/2 borriello (6M, oliveira (15M), gilardino (frey), brocchi (1M), cafu, dida, serginho, simic, favalli (all free)

Toni isn’t realistic.. We had our chance a few years ago but Silvio, the wise guy, said nope.. Gomez is good, but did you hear the price tag his team put on him? It was ridiculous.

Ideally, there’s Torres, Benzema, Robinho, Drogba even, Huntelaar, Villa.. but that’s being wayyy too optimistic.

lol Moka, everyone knows York U owns all. there’s a reason why we’re ranked #3 university with hottest chicks in North America according to Maxim. and we are #1 party Uni in Canada.

btw, today me and some friends (sadly, mostly Juventini) will be watching the game @ Hoops Sport Bar across York Uni at Keele St. if you can, make it there. i made a one-sided bet, when (not if, WHEN) Milan wins, 3 pitchers all on me :D getting drunk at 3pm, who said University life is stressful!! lol

toni is quite realistic. he is not happy in munich, despite the fact it is a fantastic town, because german is impossible to learn and he misses italia. i agree that we should have snatched him while we could, though.

the price tag on gomes is ridiculous, but it is overstated by at least 20%. no team would be willing to pay that much and stuttgart could be forced to sell for less. benzema is another possibility who would be expensive but not impossible. drogba is available, though he will go where mourinho goes, and huntelaar is another option. i would say that out of those players you mentioned only torres is truly impossible with robinho and villa being highly unlikely, the rest just improbable.

Vtec your great points were lost in the shuffle…

Toni is a very real possibility because of his desire to come home, and with Amauri going to Juve it leaves the door open for a Milan signing, no Italian really wants to go Inter. As for Drogba I do believe he will go with Mourinho, but I do believe he can be swayed to Milan. Money does great things, but so does admiration for club and city.
