Monday Milan Musings

By: Gianfranco | July 20th, 2009

-So Milan draws 2-2 with the LA Galaxy. I personally do not hold the MLS in as low a regard as many, and I also think that the quality of play is improving from the US as a whole even if the tactics are still a bit stale. With that said this draw is not all that pleasing, yes it is preseason and I have never been one to put stock in preseason games, so that will continue to be the case, but if you hold the MLS in low regard than this draw should be alarming. I will wait until next Sunday when the Inter game should heat things up a bit to make a determination.

-There is a God. The Fabiano deal appears to have fizzled out, and I for one am thankful. His value was far less than his asking price, and despite the club’s hot pursuit of a striker we are all in agreement that the money can be spent elsewhere, say LB or CM…

-Word from the boot is that Pirlo is closer to Chelsea than many of us are even aware of. He still speaks daily to Carletto, and a reunion with the man that made his career seems to be what Andrea wants. I am not happy, and I can’t help but think Rino is next, but if this is what Pirlo wants then I do believe he should get it. I am not all that keen on the money because I do not want Hernanes, but if Fester could swing Mikel, Kalou, or even Essien…I think I can swallow this move.

-So if Pirlo really does leave, one would think that Seedorf is really working on keeping himself entrenched in the first team. Do you think Clarence actually owns the club? More alarmingly however is that the Rossoneri are REALLY betting the farm on Ronaldinho. Yes many of you can call me a hater, but really, can we expect him to become Dinho circa 05? We all waited with baited breath last season and it never happened, and he was a fringe player. Now he is the linchpin and if the exodus continues he may be the longest tenured Milan player and Captain of the club!? I am just not all that keen on putting all these eggs in one heavy set, slower than usual basket…does anyone suggest we buy Sheva again and build the team around him? Probably not, but for some reason it is OK because it is Ronaldinho…they have both fallen very hard, and I am not about to give the benefit of the doubt to one and not the other.

-Anyone else think John Terry will be a traitor if he leaves Chelsea? I considered Terry a bit like Paolo, but this would ruin that in an instant, in fact just discussing with Man City is enough for me…

-World Football Challenge kicked off in earnest last night and Milan will be in action on Wed, Fri, and Sunday. The team should improve slowly each game, and at least help the team see the glaring holes for reinforcements.

To survive this market,I keep telling myself that the Milan management is full of clowns, and that we wont sign anyone. Atleast I can avoid the disappointment.

Gian – i kno exactly what u mean regarding Ants!

After all the biggin up he got from sum peeps, i cringed every time he went forward!

Seems suited to staying within his own half!

Was glad to see Strasser, and amazed at the fact that he’s only 19!

    Hecka lot of confidence!

Because they just came back from vacation/ Honeymoon Bill…… they would risk injury if they played so soon.

i expect a strong lineup for obvious reasons. probably won’t be nearly enough as milan’s pre-season reality check continues. tough times ahead methinks…

“the world is coming to a end gian & i agree on somthing Abate. i love the kid for 2 yrs now he’s got a gtr 1st touch grt pace i think he should be in the starting XI. I won’t mention the ancelotti piece cos my contempt for the man is well known, i just think we on the outside have to trust that the ppl on the inside running things know what they are doing

btw.. i think we can relax a little, it’s still early pre-season. leo have’nt got his complete team yet, he’s looking for players who can play right-now. ppl.. galliani is not a fool. milan control the press, they release what they want to release. you honestly beleive leonardo gonna start the season with oddo has back up hell no!!, we getting srna ppl. & we getting these players for cheap cos they want to play for milan, how i know this?.. history. leonardo is re-building the milan of the 80’s a few brazil a bosnian or 2 i love slavic players not as much as brazilians, but i beleive if it was not for politics Yugoslavia would have won a world cup or 2 already.. sorry to digress: a french a dutch & here i go again GIAN.. i rather huntelaar over fabiano. no it’s not a typo.

tony we should have got zhirkov but he was carletto’s boy…btw milan had no brazilians in the 80 and early 90s, come to think of it team invincible of ac milan had zero brazilians! Believe it or not historically Milan and Brazilians are like oil and water save Kaka and possibly Cafu, the rest Rivaldo, Roque Junior, Ronaldo, Oliveira and Leo were indifferent to poor, and Pato has time to tell. Should I ask again why all the Brazilian love when in the past it has gotten us nowhere…

Only saw highlights. It appears that we lack pace in the midfield and our defence is awful.
Pippo is ageless and the American didn´t impress in his first appearance.
Zambo and Janks have to step their game up or disappear.

We don´t look any better than we did at the same time last year.

4 the past 3 years people in pre season say its only a friendly we´ll be better when the regular season starts. And 4 the past 3 regular seasons we played exactly like we played in pre seasons…so if any one thinks these friendlies aren´t a pre cursor of things to come….take a look at the past 3 or 4 pre and regular seasons than come talk to me.

If B N G dont get a 2 quality players dont expect much from this season either.

Sorry but after reading some of the comments…someone has to be the realist in here.

Just thinking,Milan hardly sign players playing in other Italian clubs, unless they have come through Milan’s youth system. Oddo,Antonini,Boriello have all come from the primavera.

hey guys. I’ve been reading your for a while now since i love milan and you have tons of interesting debates. Just wanna say i love avia’s seedorf comments and gianfranco’s articles are the best on this website. Ranjeet, thats a good point you’ve made. and to be honest as much as i love home grown talent i dont think those 3 are the best players by any measure. Borriello is ok but as a club as big as milan why arent we producing world class players?

    welcome eman!

good to see there is no lack of Crapdorf love here! :-D

2b honest this time last year i was defending him and another reason i saw for NOT sigining Dino was that it would also upset Seedorfs role at Milan as well as Kakas

I-Suck-Dorf was pumped in the pre-season friendlies and was making his case for keeping Dino out of the squad but come the 1st match where he played alongside Dino as the two players sitting behind Pippo HE SUCKKKED!

My one memory that will always stay with me was when i went to the Milan/Juve match, we were tied 1-1 with 10mins left. Everytime this spaz got the ball he either lost it, misplaced the pass, passed it sideways across the pitch or (my favourite) passed it BACK down the pitch into his own half!!!!!!!!

The whole stadium was screaming at him to just get the ball into the box but everytime the ball reached him he just stopped the attack dead

I can remember the guys in the back row of the tier in front of me throwing their hands up in the air, standing up and TURNING THEIR BACKS TO THE PITCH! *sigh* u got me started now man!

I have big hopes pinned on Borriello, from the limited play of last season i think he is just oozing potential to explode and make a difference for the team (fingers crossed)

But right now i think i would have Paloschi in the squad instead of Zirgoni

When you look at what the other teams are doing during the mercato you cant but feel we are being left behind!

emam, few if any of the big clubs are producing world class players like they used to. The new mold is to buy a 16-18 and build from there…Man U and Milan were responsible for the best players of the nineties, but that is no longer the case, Barca to some extent and maybe even Ajax, but no one is growing them like they used to.

Thanks to Fet for posting the links to download the Club America – Ac Milan at high qulaity :D

After watching the game 3 times now I think seedord dint play all that bad in this game. Yea, some of his passes were here and there but actually he combined pretty well with ronnie and did his job. ( Avia- you already know that I am not a crap-dorf fan).

I think zambro was a bit rusty and let us down on the second goal..antonini was pretty good defensively (Gian – maybe you are right that he shows signs of a CB :-p) but i guess one game isnt quite enuf to judge him. Flamini imo was pretty solid and played pretty well alongside gattuso. Flamini made more runs up forward while gattuso helped the defenders with the dirty work which in fact effectively worked pretty well.

Did anyone notice that Strasser loooked pretty solid and confident? He held the ball pretty well.

Abate i think, had an immediate effect on the game in terms of pace and showed good signs of a winger.

onyewu imo had pretty mixed moments. I know he gave away a goal keeping the man onside. But, he also defended pretty well when he was called upon. Guys, its only his first game and i am pretty sure he will get better.

Zigoni looked lost to me and nesta imo is still recovering.

Also note that club america were more fitter cos they are already underway in their season while it is only the ssecond game fer us and we are missing players like Pato and pirlo.

Tonites game will be a cracker. I really hope we win or atleast draw. But chelsea have their full squad available. Lets see what happens.

syed – i stayed up late to watch the match and looks like you saw the same things i did (i EVEN noticed that WTF-Dorf was actually ok!) check comments from the nite of the match

Gian – In some ways i think that with the massive amount of money swirling around football the onus in now to get results quicker, so even while Camp Arsenal is churning them out, teams are likely just to go get a half decent youth product that is already developed to force a more rapid growth as opposed to starting from a kid

In fact youth acadamies are probably worse off now and would maybe fair better if teams all had really limited budgets

    PLATINI! SAVE FOOTBALL!
