Why Donadoni SHOULD NOT BE Fired
By: Gianfranco | September 11th, 2007I would like to take this opportunity to respond to Chris over at the Roma Blog, and also to defend The Don, former Milan man, and exact look alike of my father…SCARY.
First of all I want to look back at the WC and one Marcello Lippi. I have never denied Lippi’s talent as a coach and tactician, but a motivator is another story. Italy played out of their minds last year at the WC, and got career performances from almost everyone on the pitch, many of the players played for the pride of Seria A, while others for Pessotto, everyone had their own vendetta. That is why that team was so scary, I doubt Lippi went around rattling cages, he just found a way to harness all that rage and make it a beautifully unstoppable calcio.
The Don’s lineup choices have been erratic and odd at times, but every coach who just takes the reins goes through this phase. The difference with The Don is that he is under the microscope because of Euro ’08. He was thrust into the job when Lippi resigned and barely had a chance to make sense of anything, if we can all remember he had a meaningful game while players will still literally hungover from WC parties. I have never been a big backer of the FIGC, and until Albertini stepped up there, it looked as The Don was standing in front of a firing squad. In all honesty he still is, he has gotten NOTHING he has asked for in terms of scheduling and player dealings, the poor guy seems to be handed a knife for a gunfight at times.
The Don is coping with the loss of Totti, a one of a kind playmaker, who when in the lineup changes the entire structural formation. I do not agree with his 4-3-3 in a country where experienced strikers have gone the way of the dodo, Inzaghi is by no means the most talented player out there but he does deliver when asked to, and that cannot be denied. The mere fact that he is in the lineup though should raise a red flag about the front line state of affairs. Pirlo and DeRossi are distributing midfielders that at times look as awkward together as Gerrard and Lampard in the UK. It is important that he toys with the lineup, but it is time to make a more consistent formation, I agree with Chris that the Lithuania formation may be the way to go but if those players are not producing you open up a whole new can of worms. The bottom line is The Don’s talent pool is not so hot right, especially if you factor in big game experience, which seems to be a key thing for him. We are asking Taddei to play for us for GODS SAKE.
I do also want to bring up my, Juve theory. Does anyone else find it odd that Del Piero and Camo have been brought back into the squad despite not exactly burning down the house? I agree that Perotta or Aquilani are more viable options but is something more at work at here? The Old Lady front office does have a way of getting what they want, when they want it. Just a thought.
As for real alternatives to The Don there are no glaring candidates other than Don Fabio, who I personally see as a good choice, but remember he was not available back then and may not be available right now. Lippi has made it clear that his tenure is done and I respect his decision. I am firm believer that The Don is warming the seat for Milan’s own Carletto, but who knows. These carousels are never fun to predict.
My main point is that The Don needs to be given more of a shot. He has really had a bunch of terrible luck with players, injuries, and the FIGC all together and I feel it is to soon to quit on him already. If he does not qualify for Euro 08 then I will give him the boot myself, but at least give him a shot to sink or swim, and support him in the process, I AM TALKING TO YOU FIGC.

I totally expected this from you and anyone else associated with AC Milan. It must be nice to know that, as long as Donadoni is in charge, the Milan boys will always be first choice. Regardless of who is the better option.
If insider knowledge is to be believed, Donadoni is the reason why he is coping without Totti. Francesco is not a fan, and he has not been too subtle about that.
And I think a year is more than fair if the reigning world champions are putting continental tournament qualification into serious jeopardy. That’s ridiculous. They shouldn’t be playing scared against France and HOPING they beat Ukraine and Scotland.
And quit slagging off Taddei, he’s probably the most underrated player in Serie A. Hell, your boys were after him before he signed with Roma. Same goes for Juve and Inter.

Totti is not an excuse for the horrible lineups and performances. He was on and off for Italy and Nesta was always injured. Not reasons for the poor performances. Donadoni has been in charge for almost a year and hasn’t gotten one single lineup right (MAYBE the Ukraine and Scotland games)..
I do agree that he hasn’t been helped.. But neither was Lippi I believe.. Especially with the media hounding him regarding Calcipoli and betting..
And Taddei was being asked to play by Lippi when he took charge and Taddei refused. It’s not out of desperation but out of.. well.. he’s just awesome.

Totti has not helped this matter at all, and quite frankly if your country calls you go regardless of who is coaching. Totti did not even give The Don a chance which in my eyes is bullshit, you can only bitch about something if you have dealt with it.
I do not think Italy are playing scared but more playing to what they have got, a strong D and midfield, it is not like you can turn on the offense and tell them to score. Those types of players not falling out of trees in the boot, there is no consistency in the attack.
As for Taddei, I just believe it is sad when Camo and Taddei have to be considered and other Italians are losing their place…you should be upset too.

personally, i wouldn’t mind if pippo or alex is in the squad and come in on minute 60 onwards, what really bugs me is that donadoni choose to start with delpiero AND inzaghi… which is plain nonsense. Totti aside, he could go with quag – iaquinta, miccoli – iaquinta, quag – inzaghi, alex – iaquinta and the list could go on and on… but both pippo and alex as a starter is a big no-no.. dont he know what the french defense is gonna look like? there’s no speed or physical presence at all in the attack… just as my boss say, common sense is not very common after all.. it seems to have eluded donadoni… i think it takes some common sense (and other qualities) to win something and he seems to lack the very basic of it, common sense… i was shaking my head in disbelief when i saw alex and pippo in the starting line-up and still am now… it’s just too ridiculous to be true… i hope he realise that alex is 32, and pippo is 34 and the year is 2007.. wake up!

Elmi, your point is well taken and I agree with you to some extent. I think The Don was look for veteran marksmen in this situation, I do think pairing a vet with a speedy youngster is a better call though, the problem lies with who and why. If he picks Quags he gets flack for not picking Miccoli, if he goes with Iaquinta, he gets flack for not taking Del Piero. A better pair could have been chosen, but they we would debate that pair as well…

Chris, the Milan boys at this time only really consist of Gattuso and Pirlo…if this was true Ambro and Gila would start all the time as well (Pippo is a puzzling afterthought to me). This is something we can never agree on because of our club affiliation, but Roma has gotten a fair look from The Don and that is undeniable. I will say one thing, Gattuso is indispensable and he proves it game in and game out, it does not matter who the coach is, if Gattuso is in there you are getting 100% all the time. Pirlo has his moments of ?, but Gattuso is a valuable part of the squad.

even though i love Don, he must go. even if Italia qualifies, i dont believe he’ll be able to do anything in Euro 08.
after all, when i was a kid i use to go to Donadoni’s house all the time and play there. but the azzurri comes first Don. AZZURRI FIRST!!
