Welcome #32

By: Gianfranco | December 27th, 2008

There has been a ton of negativity towards the inclusion of David Beckham to the Rossoneri fold. In fact it has come from both within the Rossoneri tifosi ranks as well as tifosi of other clubs. The more I look at the move, the more I look at the player, and the more I look at the club, I realize that the negativity is trivial, unwarranted, and quite honestly a waste of time considering the positives in this situation purely trump any negative aspects of this move.

Let me start by saying I have a confession to make, “I LIKE DAVID BECKHAM.” Hell, David Beckham is and always has been one of my favorite football players, and that is statement that comes far from within the realm of David Beckham. Remove his “media friendly” persona, his dashing good looks, and his attractive wife; you are now left with a player who has been successful in the EPL, La Liga, and the global stage. You have a player who cried when he was dismissed playing for his country, cried more when he could not continue against Portugal, and wants nothing more than to prove to the new England coach, Don Fabio, that he is in fact a player worthy of a call up to the English National team en route to a fourth straight World Cup qualification.
Say what you want about him, but there are few players who have given as much as David Beckham has to the game of football.

We are now fortunate enough, for a short time, to welcome such a player to the ranks of the Rossoneri. Yes it may be only be for 12 games, but for those 12 games, while injuries are rampant across the board we will have a player who is playing for the right to return to his National team, an honor that even certain Rossoneri, and other Azzuri players chose so foolishly to dismiss. On the pitch, Beckham, depending on how he will be used (more on that in a future post) will give the team depth, width, and scare an opposing GK who now has the prospect of a free kick from three of the World’s best dead ball finishers.

Off the pitch, AC Milan, will now become a household name to millions of David Beckhams from the West coast of the United States to the Eastern most of South Korea, where Becks has wooed fans in his playing wake. If this means that a few of these fans become lifelong Rossoneri fans from watching Pirlo magically work the middle or Maldini playing his heart out at forty plus years of age while they tune into Becks, it makes his inclusion all that more significant.

Sure Uncle Fester wants to sell a couple more jerseys (mine is on the way) or put a few more asses in the seats, but is this such a bad thing, after we accepted it with Ronaldinho? Football is a passion for you and for me, but for others it is a business, and in this global infrastructure adding a player like Beckham will only help the Milan brand and possibly increase the chances of a better signing thanks to the increased cash flow. MLS knew the power of Beckham, and like Madrid before them, Milan sees the benefits of this move both on and off the pitch.

As an American fan of the game I was happy to see Beckham arrive, and paid to see him play. I understand for the sport to grow here it will take players that transcend the game, but also raise the level of play. If he never returns to these shores and stays at San Siro, it will be hard for MLS, but if my club can work somehow to better the level of play in my country, say with the export of players like Seedorf or Pippo than this move has far reaching benefits that at this moment have not even begun to be discussed or discovered.

Ridicule the move all you want, call it a bad for Calcio, Serie A, or even Milan. But when you are done blowing hot air, take a minute and ask yourself some simple questions. If Becks helps us win just one game, has he not done his part? If fans of Beckham buy Milan jerseys with his name on the back, but with the Rossoneri on the front does it not benefit the club? If a few hundred EPL or La Liga fans take one minute to tune into Beck’s debut against AS Roma on January 11, and like what they see, hasn’t Milan benefited the Serie A as well?

Enjoy this video, and hope that when it is all said and done, we can say thanks as well…

I hope this is the last “big name” signing. I am Ok with it as long as its a loan deal. The coming summer we need to sign 2-3 good players.

@Alessio, neither do I. Juve are not that kind of club, Milan are. Anyhow, I don’t think this circus (everything about Beckhams football career in the last few years has been a circus) is so bad for Milan. He’s there for marketing and fitness, and not really seriously expected to perform miracles. If he manages to put in a good performance or two and keep some of the others in the squad who are vying for the same position on their toes, all the better. The hype Milan can handle, that is part of their ethos.

Every team has it’s own policy depending on the coach and his superiors in the administration. Milan’s policy for the past 3 or so years has been obvious, and leaning towards getting ‘has-beens’. Ronaldo did OK, but I think we all saw him getting injured. It was bound to happen, nonetheless, he was a positive impact for Pato I’m sure. Emerson? I don’t know what Ancelotti sees in him right now. Dinho has been a really good move.

My point here, is that ideally, Milan fans want to see some young promising prospects on the field, but that will not happen anytime soon. Even if the youngsters arrive, they won’t get enough playing time to develop. In Alessio terms, if this ‘circus’ is helping the club on more than one front, then why not?

Beckham is a true professional. He reminds me of Dinho’s situation; eagerness to get back into form. For a while, I doubted Dinho’s determination to do well, but with Beckham, I don’t doubt it for one second.

He’s not gonna do amazing things on the pitch, but he will help us with a few assists for sure.

This move shows how big our club is.Ac milan can get such a big move like beckham in order to cover fiasco for not getting A LOT of money in champions league.Maybe 2 or 3 more clubs in the world could do such a thing. So this move is strictly marketing and it was actually in good time cause beckham is A LOT better then flamini or emerson. If anyone thinks we brought him to strengthen our squad he should think better…
I have to repeat i love milan even more cause they showed their power with this move

    vincent, roma fan?

beckham was the shining bright spot on a galaxy team with no defense,no goalie, and no direction. Donovan would have scored the majority of his goals without David, and Edson Buddle would not have had a near career year. Becks was the best player on a terrible team and that never ever makes you look good. The last game I watched Becks play here in the states was against RBNY on a scorchig hot evening, Angle scored the best goal of the night, but a Becks cross to Donovan and a last second goal gave the galaxy some dignity and a point…

Gianfranco- I was actually at that game! It ended 2-2 and it was a great game, first soccer game I’ve ever been to. I’m a Red Bulls fan though, so when landycakes scored at the end I was pretty pissed off.

Getting back on topic though, the Galaxy’s problem isn’t Beckham. It’s the fact that they have no defense. Beckham is fine over here in the MLS, where you have guys like Blanco who are skilled and can play well into their mid 30s. But that’s the MLS. Serie A is undoubtedly more tactical, and also starting to become more physical, as I’m sure Milan fans remember from thier game against Juventus. Is Beckham really the man you guys need right now?

No, he’s the man who will attract attention. But Milan aren’t the Galaxy. They don’t need to attention, they’re already a huge club.

Julian, it was a great game, I too am an RBNY fan! The game the year prior where Becks was on fire and so was Angel, was the best soccer game I have ever witnessed, and I went to all the Italy games of the 94 WC!

No Becks is not what we need right now, but I can’t complain about it. If your team had a chance to add a player who would add more media hype and more fans, while adding a solid player to boot, you would hope they jump at the chance as well…

I don’t hate the man, I actually respect him. I would never want to own a jersey with his name on it, but I wouldn’t mock Milan fans who do.

I’m not angry at Beckham, especially not his drive to get into form, but I’m angry that our management shoves the loan in our face like it’s the saving factor we’ve all been looking for.

milan fans don’t care about young players or old players.

    all we care about results.

if it takes a team of eleven 50 year olds who wins us the league and the CL, so be it.

age is not a deciding factor when it comes to playing for milan. it is all about your quality.

    Pretty simple really…
Beckham will help us in several areas(from least to greatest:
-He IS far, i repeat FAR better than Emerson & Flamini & maybe even Seedorf (who has REALLY been pissing me off lately!!!).

-He WILL sell more Milan jerseys which is always a good thing IMO, giving us more fanbase, more exposure, & most importantly MORE $$$MONEY$$$.

-He HELPS our injury-plauged bench and povides some depth…at first i was against this move, but the more injuries we have sustained, the more this move helps us out with basically everybody in the Midfield banged up!

As for the Becks issue, Gian has got sum valid points imo.

Becks has always come across as the ultimate sports professional, he didnt reach the top and lose his head and start going out partying (other players take note!) but on the pitch he has always been focused on delivering the goods.

Being in the UK, you couldnt help but watch him grow up as a player and football icon, i dont rate him as the best ever ever ever etc (Pirlo is more than an equal imo) but the one thing im counting on is just his mere presence in training and guys like Seedorf and Emerson might put the work in.

Whatever we might think of his addition to the squad, one thing is for sure, BECKS HASNT JOINED JUST TO SIT ON HIS ASS!

Tru Fester is thinking money, but i’d rather sign a player who will generate money AND bring some steely professionalism with him.

PS: cant we sell off Shev during Jan to make way for any possible non-EU players we might want????

Sorry, for what he was supposed to bring to the Super team Galaxy, on the field he has been a failure. Cares more about 10 minutes with England than helping the Galaxy. Hardly a “true” professional. Cares only about England caps, however farcical they come

    Vincent’s right there.

Although to be fair, people can’t expect Beckham to run rings around defenders and score outrageous goals. He’s never done that. A guy designed to support others is probably the worst the MLS could import, of course ignoring his massive public persona. Thierry Henry would light it up, or some defender who could capably hold his own.

This would be wonderful… he is playing so scared up there, he is a shell of the old Sheva and we need to drop him now.

Do you think we could also sell Dorf & Senderos in Jan.???

I would then like to pick up Cannavaro & Sergio Ramos to man the Defense along side Silva…… yup I’m dreaming, but Fester & Silvio are the type of people who could make that sort of dream come true, but I’m not holding my breath.!

Beckham on moving to the US:

“I’m coming there not to be a superstar. I’m coming there to be part of the team, to work hard and to hopefully win things. With me, it’s about football. I’m coming there to make a difference. I’m coming there to play football… I’m not saying me coming over to the States is going to make soccer the biggest sport in America. That would be difficult to achieve. Baseball, basketball, American football, they’ve been around. But I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think I could make a difference.”

There’s only so much one can do to a team that is coming out of, apparently, it’s worst season ever.

Lukovic? I have heard of him,but cant place him right now. Udinese i think?
We have been also linked with Helguera(CRAP),Cannavaro(Past it), Agger(Want him),Mexes(not bad) and Dossena(wont join in Jan.) in defense and Miglaccio(not needed), some youngsters from Parma(so more people can sit on the bench and Simon Rolfes(some DM i think). Mostly crap. Except Agger.
Oh i forgot to mention Gallas. Not that I would have mentioned him, even if I had remembered.
And thats our TRANSFER ROUNDUP from the last month.
