Wednesday Milan Musings

Thanks to Martha for sparing me from having to write countless useless words about Kaka’s brother Digao. All I can say is this smells like favoritism at work and if the kid cannot hack it he needs to be shown the door. I do not care whose brother, son, father, or college roommate he is, if he can play welcome to the team if you can’t then ARRIVEDERCI.

The mystery striker business waged on from Uncle Fester today. He was very coy about Julio Baptiste and also about the prospectus of bringing in Pato. This whole mystery will settle down soon though because Pato is supposedly on the brink of a decision, and at this point your guess is as good as mine.

On a bit of a comedic point Azzuri goalie, Gianluigi Buffon, has claimed that he wants to play until he is 40, like the great Dino Zoff before him. This means guys like Abbiati and Amelia can kiss their national team caps goodbye. I am all in favor of Gigi playing for a long time, because it is a well known fact that the older the goalie, the more experience he has, and the more value he has between the pipes. I just cannot see him going for that long, he seems like he is one acting gig away from leaving soccer, on the spectrum of odd people Gigi is up there on my list. Sometimes I cannot even tell what is going on with him, during a game at Giants Stadium I watched him pull his shorts up and down from the inseam like fifteen times while the ball was on the other side of the pitch. I had no idea what was going on and was almost embarrassed as people around me asked what on Earth he was doing, I wish I could find the pictures, weird.

It looks like the Rossoneri have completely quit on any defensive additions this off season. Many fans would argue that they have completely quit on this entire transfer window, I am inclined to agree. I brought up a point a few posts back discussing the Rossoneri’s inability to compete on all competitive levels from the Champions League through the Coppa Italia, I just do not see how this could be possible with our current roster and real lack of talent in the youth teams. The main squad is strong and experienced; but as those key parts are taken off the pitch, it does not leave a very menacing lineup throughout the roster. As a fan I appreciate their consistent goal to win the Champions League, but I wouldn’t mind a season of utter dominance like way back in the early nineties. I am not complaining but I just wouldn’t mind a few trophies a year.

The “Kaka Face of the Franchise” discussions have yet to subside and at this stage I am not sure if I can continue bitching about or just let it rest for now. I am just waiting for Gattuso to awake from his summer slumber and bite someone’s head off. If I was him I would be a bit slighted, that man has worked his ass off for this club and he sometimes does not get the respect he deserves. I just watched the replay of Man U-AC Milan second leg and it is evident they do not win that game without him, period.

Like Martha said, the only reason Digao is there is to show Kaka what Milan will do for him. Digao will probably see the pitch about 4 times in the next two seasons, anyways.

we have 11 defenders on roster.. unless we start cuttin some of them loose, which aint goin to happen, theres no reason to start adding new ones–i said in one of my earlier posts that we had 10 defenders, but turned out simic didnt actually go to marseille.. or did he?

Simic was confirmed to Marseille a while back but it may or may not have actually happened, I will check it out.

you’re right k. though i do expect quite a few quality defensive additions at the end of the 2007-08 campaign. with maldini (*sniff*), cafu and serginho (i hope) retiring and favalli possibly being offloaded (wishfull thinking) milan would have no choice but to spend big or go home. crap, inter got chivu- they just keep gettin stronger don’t they. i’m so trying not to get jealous…

gianfranco, u are absolutely right when you say rino was essential to our milan v man u victory. he thoroughly deserved his man-of-the-match award :) !everyone praises kaka for his stylish performances- including myself- but what i think most people fail to realize is that kaka thrives on two things: space and protection.1)space for all the obvious reasons. 2) protection: without gattuso acting effectively as his bodyguard kaka is (more than not) non-exsistent in a match. case and point at old trafford for the first leg when rino comes off injured how drastically has kaka’s influence on the game been reduced? he basically disappeared! especially for games which are won in the midfield battle gattuso’s role is absolutely vital in getting the best out of kaka. i rest my case.

There are 4 players that do everything now in Milan and these are Kaka and Gattuso the most, then Pirlo and Nesta. Nobody said that when Kaka becomes the face of Milan (and if he becomes) he will replace Maldini ( although i don’t think he’ll be playing by that time) or Gattuso ( for whom i think already is a face of Milan and was for a long time, and will be the next captian of Milan for sure). Kaka is a god damn good player and that man does deserve to be acknowledged by Milan in a way that they let them know how much he means to the team. Who brought us the Champions League but these two guys and they deserve to be on the mantle, Kaka must strive to something at Milan if not – there’s no challenge, he might leave(the reason for whole this). But the man said he’s gonna stay and that he wants to be a Rossonero for life!

uh-oh… you are about to incur the wrath of gianfranco with that “face” talk, danny.. but i do agree with you, gattuso is already the face of milan along with maldini and kaka will be in the future(and in all honesty already is, but so are pirlo and nesta, imo)…

and J, keep chivu the hell away from us.. that guy is nothing but trouble and inter can buy all the players they want… and i hope they get cassano too.. can’t wait for a 4-way head-case stand-off… ibra, adri-thepartyboy-ano, chivu and cassano… it will be damn well legendary…

and yes, gattuso and pirlo are vital to kaka, but lets not forget that no one can give us that further push in the attacking third like kaka… and we all know that without kaka we would have never even gotten to the final let alone win the cl without kaka… which, gianfranco kind of makes all that resentment towards kaka really surprising.. kaka is as vital to milan as gattuso and pirlo for that matter…

I appreciated the varying points but as J said there are times that Kaka disappears which at times is a lack of service or experience. I appreciate Kaka and his contribution to Milan but I am yet to be fully sold on his abilities and his set position. At times I compare his role to that of Totti, a central attacking role behind the forwards, this is a VERY DIFFICULT role to fill because the player can be on the flank or even ahead of the forwards so it takes a large amount of skill, which Kaka just does not display to me. His goals are rarely spectacular but have more of a workman or craftsmanship aspect to them instead of just raw amazing skills like Little Lionel for example. Much of what Kaka does is right place right time instead of shear beaut.

so ture K…I agree i couldn’t have said it better myself.

Inter have like what now 60 strikers? They just keep buying and placing on the side for a rainy day. And their are like what 5 italians on the whole team? Their an italian team without any italians because the only people who really are always playing is Matrix; Coco doesn’t play, I don’t know about Andreolli, and Toldo, and Orlandoni I doubt play because they are reserves.

Take it from someone who watched their club’s season crash and burn partially because of having to play so many games (domestic league, domestic cup, Champions League, Intercontinental Cup, friendlies etc) – Milan would be wise to get more cover for every position. Liverpool had similar issues the season after they won it in ‘05 as well.
