Wednesday Milan Musings

By: Gianfranco | October 15th, 2008

I want to apologize for my lack of posts in the past few days but this International break has been horrendous in terms of quality calcio, and Milan related news. Lippi’s “Don Style New Azzuri” has me wondering why on Earth there was Donadoni witch hunt only a few months back to bring in this fella. Yes Lippi had success in 06 and I am undyingly grateful for that but lining up Bonera, Perrotta, Rino, and DiNatale is not exactly seasoning the young guns for 2010 now is it? I am not asking to Lippi to field the U21 squad, but playing Rossi and Montolivo is not all that much to ask now is it? The team is not playing lights out calcio considering games against Bulgaria and Montenegro should be won handedly, and I am afraid that a big time opponent will rip this seemingly pompous team a new one. Thank god there is a ways to go before some real competition.

I am done ranting on this Azzuri, but as you can see I am not all that pleased…

In a few days Milan will be welcoming Sampdoria to the San Siro, and the sight of the Rossoneri taking the pitch will be a welcomed sight. An even more welcomed sight will be the potential return of both Marco Borriello and Sandro Nesta who will go a long way in the strengthening Milan in both the front and the back. Nesta, if fit, will most certainly be in the lineup with Borriello being a decision left to Carletto and his tactical formation for Sunday. A dual striker system with Kaka behind seems to make the most sense with healthy and able personnel, but we will learn more together as game draws closer.

I want to take a minute to discuss Gourcuff before we wrap this post up. The kid is flat out playing his heart out at Bordeaux and his goal on Saturday for Les Blues was the goal of the weekend, hands down. So what went wrong at the San Siro? First and foremost Gourcuff had no real position in the Xmas tree, along side Pirlo was to deep, while the attacking line alongside Kaka was a bit to advanced. Gourcuff is a your typical box to box versatile mid who feels most at home in the center of the pitch, which is a job that doesn’t seem to really exist in the Carletto system. If Cuffy does return to Milan his success will depend solely on his usage, and depending on who is still on the roster next season may prove as bad if not worse than it was prior to his departure. I want him back, but if we can cash in big and sell him to Wenger, then I can’t disagree. Carletto really has to look at his bench/roster and say use him or lose him…

Little video to enjoy…

*grins* :D that’s my video…before I went all technical and actually knew what I was doing…lol

Your totally right on Cuffy though…Carletto has to either work his system around him or we need to sell him to make a profit.

Tell Carletto to switch the formation. If he sells Gourcuff i’ll kill him.

I think cuffy coming back will be the end of the dorf having a starting role/getting regular playing time. Which he should accept. After all, he is the same age as emerson, granted his abilities are much different.

The bottom line is there is an abundance at midfield if we do get cuffy back, give cardacio a chance and hopefully have abate return, on top of rino ambro pirlo seedorf flamini r80, kaka, pato and whoever else would play either mf or behind the striker in teh xmas tree.

I think if we are to let gcuff go or sell him it would be ideal to get the rights of another player in return. Young defender maybe. I think attackers are out of the question now that we have a surplus there, when healthy.

seedorf is the same age as emerson??? he doesn’t look 70 :) however i do agree that the time for seedorf is drawing to a close, the same said about rino and ambro, maldini and nesta, pippo and prolly sheva :( only good news is that hopefully emerson and favalli will be gotten rid of sooner than later. But with the young uruguayans progressing, flamini and dinho being purchased, abate, antonini, and paloschi coming thru the ranks, and gourcuff coming back from loan, we should retain all the quality at half the age, so im not too worried

Gourcuff plays in exactly the same position as occupied by Seedorf in the last 2 years: the link man between midfield and attack.

So Inter are going to move out of San Siro. What’s Milan going to do? They should buy it and patch it up a bit.

I’m so glad this lackluster International break is over. Thank goodness for other sports this week, because the Azzurri’s play was just not cutting it.

I would love to see Cuffy back… but only with a promise of Seedorf having a downplayed role. Imagine the Cuff playing like he is now combined with a fully fit Pirlo? Delicious.

A, that was Cuffy’s role for Milan, but at Bourdeaux he is playing a role similiar to Lampard at Chelsea. Box to box and getting himself in scoring oppurtunities and less emphasis on passing.

we got ourselves a new Milan site. not bad, i just hope they would translate the news faster (simultaneously) and have more new/exclusive videos and translate all the video interviews. they had it in the older version if you remember.

That might be true Gianfranco. I haven’t seen all that much of Bordeaux to be honest. But for France against Romania, he was playing an eerily similar role to what Seedorf has been doing at Milan or Zidane was doing for all his clubs.

Actually there were many resemblences with the Seedorf/Kaka role and that played by Cuffy and Ribery for France.

i luv seedorf but lets be honest he ain’t gonna b first xi quality for that much longer. don’t get me wrong he’s still world class but he blows hot n cold way 2 often 4 my liking. by next season he’ll be 32 yrs old. i honestly cant c seedorf accepting a substitute role for us… so if i were coach i would be willing 2 gamble on gourcuff coming back n taking over seedorf’s role. but what seedorf has that i can’t c gourcuff giving us is that pure strong, physical quality. seedorf can easily help do dirty work n he’s sooooo hard to get off the ball… gourcuff (so far) jus doesn’t have that though…

J - I get what u mean about Seedorf blowin hot & cold but in his defence EVERY1 in the squad has been hot & cold barring maybe only Abbiati.

I will def be gutted if we dont keep young Cuffy, i still think he has to develop fully but we’d be crazy to sell him!

I did notice that in preseason that Seedorfs work rate & quality went through the roof (due to Dinos arrival i bet!) and the only reason we arent suffern throughout Pirlos layoff is the work The ‘Dorf has been putting in.

I still think The Dorf has more than one more season in him, i’d like to see Cuffy “phased” into the squad in Seedorfs place over 2 seasons. But this would likely require a new coach as Carlo just dont roll like that.

Eh…people Yohann is on a loan with “Bordeaux’s option” to buy.

Stupid Ancelotti promised him playing time last year which he didn’t get, because he decided to play Brocchi, “who had no future at the club.”

We end up finishing 5th, breaking our promise to him by keeping him on the bench in the process.

So we loan him out with an option for Bordeaux to buy, Y?

Because stupid Ancelotti didn’t realize the talent that Yohann was/is or how to get the best out of him. (as is the case with most young players) You must give them playing time & put these young players in positions that amplify their strengths, not force them to play a certain way that kills their natural abilities/creativity.

For this reason Ancelotti only like matured players as he can’t develop young ones like Wenger.

If they can’t play in the formation Ancelotti has setup they’re frozen out of the line up, while their confidence takes a beating, and their stock and ability goes plummeting downwards.

But as soon as they move to another team they’re reborn!!!

Avia - Get ready for that gutted feeling cause, I’d be surprised if Bordeaux doesn’t exercise their option on Gourcuff at the end of this season.

Ancelotti MUST change his approach with youngsters and how they are used, or GET OUT!!!

BigDawg4Milan - Cuffys future depends on Carlos future!

What coach wouldnt take over the Milan hot seat and immediately demand Cuffys immediate return???

The only hope really is that Berlo/Fester excercise their influence over Carlo to ensure Cuffys playn time, as im sure this is the case with Dino.

Moka - i read that but didnt even wana raise it! another bs.com piece????

Becks might train with milan when mls is over. This was reported by channel4. Leave it to bs.com to stretch this story to mean we are going to buy a thirty something, overrated, over paid, Mr. posh-spice-jersey-seller.

moka- the becks thing is jus nonsense! he’s ONLY gonna train with us if anyting at all.

avia- i agree with u on the ancelotti thing. sadly carletto jus doesn’t want to let go of the past. he only likes players who have proven themselves however long ago sadly… if we lose Gourcuff i would be soooooooo pissed! from his first game with milan (in the UCL) we all saw that this kid was gonna be great. milan better not make a mess of this one. the only way it seems that gourcuff wud wanna come back is if he is guarenteed more playin time… which either means competition in the likes of a seedorf, or pirlo, or dinho are removed OR if we get a new coach who convinces him that he will be taken seriously at milan… anyone say FRANK RIJKAARD maybe?…

fg, Beck’s heart was set on a move to Milan instead of the MLS, but the MLS was to sweet to pass up. He has always “fancied” Milan and him training with the squad seems like a good idea for everyone involved. Now talk about a player who doesnt fit in at all!?

Avia, Cuffy for Adebayor is a no brainer…as would be Cuffy for Clichy IMO…
