Thursday Milan Musings
By: Gianfranco | October 9th, 2008These international breaks are really starting to bug me. Maybe it is because Lippi has taken the fewest amount of Milan players that I can remember in recent memory, his loss, or maybe it is because the World Cup is so far away and the only thing I can think about is the next Milan game on the fixture list. Either way the sooner we clear this weekend the sooner we can get back to what really matters, the ROSSONERI.
Midweek a friendly match was played between Fiorentina and Milan in honor of former player of both clubs, Stegano Borgonovo. Borgonovo is currently fighting for his life, against what many call the “footballers disease” in Italy. Here is a bit of a info on Borgonovo followed by a youtube video of Wednesday’s match and ceremony. Really a sad story, but a true reality for many athletes who fall ill both in and outside the world of football.
Borgonovo began his career with Como Calcio, debuting as a 17 year-old in a Serie A match against Ascoli Calcio. After a loan spell at Sambenedettese Calcio, Borgnovo established himself as an key player at Como, and in 1986 moved to A.C. Milan, who immediately loaned him back to Como.
After two years there, he was sent on loan again, this time to ACF Fiorentina, where had the most successful season of his career, scoring 14 league goals while playing alongside Roberto Baggio. This earned him three caps for Italy and finally a chance to prove himself at Milan. He spent much of the 1989-90 season as backup to Marco van Basten and, despite earning a European Cup winners’ medal, moved on, keen to play regular first-team football. Although then Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi was keen to keep his services, he returned to Fiorentina, where he spent two years without managing to recapture his previous form.
Spells at Pescara Calcio, Udinese and Brescia Calcio followed, before Borgonovo retired in 1996. He later served as a youth coach back at Como, but retired in 2005 due to poor health.
Illness
On September 5, 2008, it was revealed Borgonovo was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the same illness that slowly killed Gianluca Signorini, another former Serie A player, in 2002.
On a lighter note, season highlights up to now brought to you by the great folks at the Milan Channel:

The reason he didn’t take many Milan players is because your Italian players are quite simply OLD. Pirlo and Ambrosini are the only two I feel should be on the squad. Gattuso has lost his steam, Bonera is suitable but definitely not stellar, Zambrotta is great but old, and who do you have up front but the injured Borriello?

i agree gian, i hate the international break…

A, Zambro, Bonera, and Rino were called up. But I hope that in the future, 2010, Borriello is a serious consideration.

I wouldn’t be worried about Milan’s contingent in the Nazionale, Gianfranco. Hell, Juve only has 1 player there right now. You can count on Pirlo and Borriello being picked if they are healthy and in-form, maybe even Abbiati as a backup if he patches things up with Amelia.

If Amelia is from Livorno it would be highly unlikely, if you know what I mean…

Interesting, a glaring omission from Milan Official video – #76. LOL.

Gianfranco, how much do you know about rossoneri azzurrini?

The international break is excellent for Milan, means we get to heal a few players and get closer to full strength before we play again and the fact so few rossoneri are in the azzurri makes it easier for us to get fit without worrying about the next game.
I hope bonera is the only rossoneri to get game time with the azzurri, he is the only one who needs it.
Still, im a little concerned that once everyones fit carlo might have problems balancing the team again.

fg, the Rossoneri are well represented in the Azzurrini. Abate, Antonini, and Marzorratti have all been given time under Casiraghi with Abate going to the Olympics as well. There are also, as always, rumors linking the Rossoneri to prominent Azzurrini specifically GRossi and De Silvestri.

thanks gian
i hope we see some of them in two years at the WC. I have my doubts that with so much young talent, the likes of Rino, ambro, and zambrotta wont be there.

I love it when they play these charity games, not only it is for a good cause, but it also gives us fans the chance to see great players from the past. Wasn’t it wonderful seeing our unbeatable backline playing again together and also having the likes of Albertini, Donadoni, Gullit around? And the sight of Roby Baggio pushing borgonovo wheelchair was too much to handle for me.It takes the least thing to make me cry, so you can only imagine what that did to me.

Agreed nina, I haven’t seen any pictures or anything of Baggio in forever. A very sad story.
Speaking of all-star games, I remember watching this one very well, I was about 11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUVJ_rzkpnY

Speaking of addii, Milan may come under criticism for letting players stay with the club too long (Serginho, Cafu) but I’ve always wished Juve gave our stars farewells like Milan does.

And sorry to spam post the blog, but I found this very interesting- Crespo says Mourinho is a great coach, but an “ideal coach” is none other than Carlo Ancelotti.
“Non dica che Mourinho è il suo allenatore ideale.
”L’ideale, no. Però è bravo.

Hey, that’s a great idea…
How would you like to expand your South American contingent? I know Milan has a penchant for Brazilians, but have you thought about branching out into Argentinians? They are clean and quiet and make a great Christmas gift for everyone on your list.
It just so happens that we recently redecorated the house and have this very desirable Argentinian that just no longer goes with the decor. He is slightly used, but the springs are still good shape and, in the right home, I think he would work quite nicely.
I am sure we could offer him to you at a discounted price. Think of it as one step closer to the all-striker squad Galliani seems to be building. And the bonus, he is also an Italian citizen so it is like a 2-for-1.
Really, I think Crespo is about one step away from being put onto the curb with a “free” sign around his neck.

Aplogies if this is already common knowledge,
“MILAN – Doctor Massimo Manara talked about the situations of all the injured players with Milan’s doctor Massimo Manara:
Favalli
‘He has started the physical work. He is clearly improving. On Monday he should return to work with the group.Kaladze
‘He has been checked and it was confirmed his old scar has caused a lesion. But the pain is decreasing. More evaluations will be made on Monday when he starts doing physical work.’Nesta
‘His physical work is proceeding more than positively. From Monday he will be back with the team completely.’Senderos
‘He has clearly improved. He is also set to rejoin the team next week.’Pirlo
‘An ecography evidenced that his lesions are turning into scars. From today he incremented the physical work, there will be one more check in 15 days.’Borriello
‘He was checked this morning. His muscular problem is completely resolved. He will be available next week.’Flamini
‘He didn’t answer the call up of the national team because he suffered a trauma to his right ankle in the match at Cagliari. He was subjected to an x-ray check, so he will stay out for 5-6 days.”Posted from

Was senderos injured when we signed him? I don’t remember seeing him play so far. When did he pick the injury?

I think he’s just nervous.

Argentine’s seem to be less moody than Brazilians as a serious plus, too.

yah alessio that was my favorite farewell game. just to see all those players playing again and on top of all its Baresi`s last game, which was so sad, and all i could think of is `i cant believe Paolo will be in his place soon`and now he will be in a few months.
another good game was the Albertini farewell game, Milan vs. Barcelona and Van Basten scored a nice goal. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=19SyHjlU39M
